1 Fiz concerto com os meus olhos: como pois atentaria numa virgem?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; how then should I look upon a maid?

2 Porque qual seria a parte de Deus de cima? ou a herança do Todo-poderoso para mim desde as alturas?

For what would be the portion of God from above, and the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

3 Porventura não é a perdição para o perverso, o desastre para os que obram iniquidade?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

4 Ou não vê ele os meus caminhos, e não conta todos os meus passos?

Doth not He see my ways, and count all my steps?

5 Se andei com vaidade, e se o meu pé se apressou para o engano

If I have walked with vanity, and my foot hath hasted to deceit —

6 (Pese-me em balanças fieis, e saberá Deus a minha sinceridade),

Let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know mine integrity —

7 Se os meus passos se desviavam do caminho, e se o meu coração segue os meus olhos, e se às minhas mãos se apegou coisa alguma,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after mine eyes, and if any spot hath cleaved to my hands;

8 Então semeie eu e outro coma, e seja a minha descendência arrancada até à raiz.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

9 Se o meu coração se deixou seduzir por uma mulher, ou se eu armei traições à porta do meu próximo,

If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbour's door;

10 Então moa minha mulher para outro, e outros se encurvem sobre ela.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 Porque é uma infâmia, e é delito pertencente aos juízes.

For that were a heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

12 Porque fogo é que consomem até à perdição, e desarreigaria toda a minha renda.

For it is a fire that consumeth unto destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

13 Se desprezei o direito do meu servo ou da minha serva, quando eles contendiam comigo,

If I did despise the cause of my man-servant, or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me —

14 Então que faria eu quando Deus se levantasse? e, inquirindo a causa, que lhe responderia?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when He remembereth, what shall I answer Him?

15 Aquele que me fez no ventre não o fez também a ele? ou não nos formou do mesmo modo na madre?

Did not He that made me in the womb make him? And did not One fashion us in the womb?

16 Se retive o que os pobres desejavam, ou fiz desfalecer os olhos da viúva,

If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 Ou só comi o meu bocado, e o órfão não comeu dele

Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof —

18 (Porque desde a minha mocidade cresceu comigo como com seu pai, e o guiei desde o ventre de minha mãe),

Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb.

19 Se a alguém vi perecer por falta de vestido, e ao necessitado por não ter coberta,

If I have seen any wanderer in want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

20 Se os seus lombos me não abençoaram, se ele não se aquentava com as peles dos meus cordeiros,

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 Se eu levantei a minha mão contra o órfão, porquanto na porta via a minha ajuda,

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;

22 Então caia do ombro a minha espadoa, e quebre-se o meu braço do osso.

Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 Porque o castigo de Deus era para mim um assombro, e eu não podia suportar a sua alteza.

For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of His majesty I could do nothing.

24 Se no ouro pus a minha esperança, ou disse ao ouro fino: Tu és a minha confiança;

If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold: 'Thou art my confidence';

25 Se me alegrei de que era muita a minha fazenda, e de que a minha mão tinha alcançado muito;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

26 Se olhei para o sol, quando resplandecia, ou para a lua, caminhando gloriosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

27 E o meu coração se deixou enganar em oculto, e a minha boca beijou a minha mão,

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, and my mouth hath kissed my hand;

28 Também isto seria delito pertencente ao juiz: pois assim negaria a Deus que está em cima.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; for I should have lied to God that is above.

29 Se me alegrei da desgraça do que me tem ódio, e se eu exultei quando mal o achou

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or exulted when evil found him —

30 (também não deixei pecar o meu paladar, desejando a sua morte com maldição),

Yea, I suffered not my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse.

31 Se a gente da minha tenda não disse: Ah, quem nos desse da sua carne! nunca nos fartariamos dela:

If the men of my tent said not: 'Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat?'

32 O estrangeiro não passava a noite na rua; as minhas portas abria ao viandante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street; my doors I opened to the roadside.

33 Se, como Adão, encobri as minhas transgressões, ocultando o meu delito no meu seio;

If after the manner of men I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom —

34 Porque eu temia a grande multidão, e o desprezo das famílias me apavoraria, e eu me calaria, e não sairia da porta.

Because I feared the great multitude, and the most contemptible among families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door.

35 Ah quem me dera um que me ouvisse! eis que o meu intento é que o Todo-poderoso me responda, e que o meu adversário escreva um livro.

Oh that I had one to hear me! — Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me — and that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

36 Por certo que o levaria sobre o meu ombro, sobre mim o ataria por coroa.

Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown.

37 O número dos meus passos lhe mostraria: como príncipe me chegaria a ele.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

38 Se a minha terra clamar contra mim, e se os seus regos juntamente chorarem,

If my land cry out against me, and the furrows thereof weep together;

39 Se comi a sua novidade sem dinheiro, e sufoquei a alma dos seus donos,

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the tillers thereof to be disappointed —

40 Por trigo me produza cardos, e por cevada joio. Acabaram-se as palavras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and noisome weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
