Eclesiastes 6
1 Há um mal que tenho visto debaixo do sol, e mui frequente é entre os homens:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy upon men:
2 Um homem a quem Deus deu riquezas, fazenda e honra, e nada lhe falta de tudo quanto a sua alma deseja, e Deus não lhe dá poder para daí comer, antes o estranho lho come: também isto é vaidade e uma má enfermidade.
a man to whom God giveth riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacketh nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but an alien eateth it; this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3 Se o homem gerar cem filhos, e viver muitos anos, e os dias dos seus anos forem muitos, porém a sua alma se não fartar do bem, e também não tiver sepultura, digo que um aborto é melhor do que ele.
If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul be not filled with good, and moreover he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he:
4 Porquanto debalde veio, e às trevas se vai, e de trevas se encobre o seu nome.
for it cometh in vanity, and departeth in darkness, and the name thereof is covered with darkness;
5 E ainda que nunca viu o sol, nem o conheceu, mais descanço tem do que o tal.
moreover it hath not seen the sun nor known it; this hath rest rather than the other:
6 E, ainda que vivesse duas vezes mil anos e não visse o bem, porventura todos não vão para um mesmo lugar?
yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet enjoy no good, do not all go to one place?
7 Todo o trabalho do homem é para a sua boca, e contudo nunca se enche a sua cobiça.
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8 Porque, que mais tem o sábio do que o tolo? e que mais tem o pobre que sabe andar perante os vivos?
For what advantage hath the wise more than the fool? [or] what hath the poor man, that knoweth how to walk before the living?
9 Melhor é a vista dos olhos do que o vaguear da cobiça: também isto é vaidade, e aflição de espírito.
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
10 Seja qualquer o que for, já o seu nome foi nomeado, e sabe-se que é homem, e que não pode contender com o que é mais forte do que ele.
Whatsoever hath been, the name thereof was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him that is mightier than he.
11 Na verdade que há muitas coisas que multiplicam a vaidade: que mais tem o homem com elas!
Seeing there are many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12 Porque quem sabe o que é bom nesta vida para o homem, durante o número dos dias da vida da sua vaidade, os quais gasta como sombra? porque quem declarará ao homem que é o que passará depois dele debaixo do sol
For who knoweth what is good for man in [his] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
