Eclesiastes 4
1 Depois me virei, e atentei em todas as opressões que se fazem debaixo do sol; e eis que vi as lágrimas dos que foram oprimidos e dos que não tem consolador; e a força estava da banda dos seus opressores; porém eles não tinham consolador.
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of [such as were] oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors [there was] power; but they had no comforter.
2 Pelo que eu louvei os mortos que já morreram, mais do que os vivos que vivem ainda,
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
3 E melhor que uns e outros é aquele que ainda não é; que não viu as más obras que se fazem debaixo do sol.
Yea, better [is he] than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 Também vi eu que todo o trabalho, e toda a destreza em obras, attrahe ao homem a inveja do seu próximo. também isto é vaidade e aflição de espírito.
Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This [is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.
5 O tolo cruza as suas mãos, e come a sua própria carne.
The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 Melhor é uma mão cheia com descanço do que ambos os punhos cheios com trabalho, e aflição de espírito.
Better [is] an handful [with] quietness, than both the hands full [with] travail and vexation of spirit.
7 Outra vez me tornei a virar, e vi uma vaidade debaixo do sol.
Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 Há um tal que é só, e não tem segundo, nem tão pouco filho nem irmã; e de todo o seu trabalho não há fim, nem o seu olho se farta de riquezas; nem diz: Para quem trabalho eu, e privo a minha alma do bem? também isto é vaidade e enfadonha ocupação.
There is one [alone], and [there is] not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet [is there] no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither [saith he], For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This [is] also vanity, yea, it [is] a sore travail.
9 Melhores são dois do que um, porque tem melhor paga do seu trabalho.
Two [are] better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 Porque se vierem a cair, um levanta ao seu companheiro: mas ai do que estiver só; pois, caindo, não haverá outro que o levante.
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him [that is] alone when he falleth; for [he hath] not another to help him up.
11 Também, se dois dormirem juntos, eles se aquentarão; mas um só como se aquentará?
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm [alone]?
12 E, se alguém prevalecer contra um, os dois lhe resistirão; e o cordão de três dobras não se quebra tão depressa.
And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Melhor é o mancebo pobre e sábio do que o rei velho e insensato, que se não deixa mais admoestar.
Better [is] a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
14 Porque um sai do cárcere para reinar; sim, um que nasceu pobre no seu reino.
For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also [he that is] born in his kingdom becometh poor.
15 Vi a todos os viventes andarem debaixo do sol com o mancebo, o sucessor que estará no seu lugar.
I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
16 Não tem fim todo o povo, todo o que houve antes dele; tão pouco os descendentes se alegrarão dele. Na verdade que também isto é vaidade e aflição de espírito.
[There is] no end of all the people, [even] of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
