Deuteronômio 20
1 Quando saires à peleja contra teus inimigos, e vires cavalos, e carros, e povo maior em número do que tu, deles não terás temor; pois o Senhor teu Deus, que te tirou da terra do Egito, está contigo.
And if you should go forth to war against your enemies, and should see horse, and rider, and a people more numerous than yourself; you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God [is] with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
2 E será que, quando vos achegardes à peleja, o sacerdote se adiantará, e falará ao povo,
And it shall come to pass whenever you shall draw near to battle, that the priest shall draw near and speak to the people, and shall say to them,
3 E dir-lhe-á: Ouve, ó Israel, hoje vos achegais à peleja contra os vossos inimigos: que se não amoleça o vosso coração; não temais nem tremais, nem vos aterroriseis diante deles,
Hear, O Israel; you are going this day to battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint, fear not, neither be confounded, neither turn aside from their face.
4 Pois o Senhor vosso Deus é o que vai convosco, a pelejar contra os vossos inimigos, para salvar-vos.
For [it is] the Lord your God who advances with you, to fight with you against your enemies, [and] to save you.
5 Então os oficiais falarão ao povo, dizendo: Qual é o homem que edificou casa nova e ainda a não consagrou? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que porventura não morra na peleja e algum outro a consagre.
And the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man [is] he that has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war, and another man dedicate it.
6 E qual é o homem que plantou uma vinha e ainda não logrou fruto dela? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que porventura não morra na peleja e algum outro o logre.
And what man [is] he that has planted a vineyard, and not been made merry with it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man be made merry with it.
7 E qual é o homem que está desposado com alguma mulher e ainda a não recebeu? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que porventura não morra na peleja e algum outro homem a receba.
And what man [is] he that has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
8 E continuarão os oficiais a falar ao povo, dizendo: Qual é o homem medroso e de coração tímido? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que o coração de seus irmãos se não derreta como o seu coração.
And the scribes shall speak further to the people, and say, What man [is] he that fears and is cowardly in his heart? Let him go and return to his house, lest he make the heart of his brother fail, as his own.
9 E será que, quando os oficiais acabarem de falar ao povo, então ordenarão os maiorais dos exércitos na dianteira do povo.
And it shall come to pass when the scribes shall have ceased speaking to the people, that they shall appoint generals of the army to be leaders of the people.
10 Quando te achegares a alguma cidade a combate-la, apregoar-lhe-ás a paz.
And if you shall draw near to a city to overcome them by war, then call them out peaceably.
11 E será que, se te responder em paz, e te abrir, todo o povo que se achar nela te será tributário e te servirá.
If then they should answer peaceably to you, and open to you, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be tributary and subject to you.
12 Porém, se ela não fizer paz contigo, mas antes te fizer guerra, então a sitiarás.
But if they will not listen to you, but wage war against you, you shall invest it;
13 E o Senhor teu Deus a dará na tua mão; e todo o macho que houver nela passarás ao fio da espada,
until the Lord your God shall deliver it into your hands, and you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:
14 Salvo somente as mulheres, e as crianças, e os animais; e tudo o que houver na cidade, todo o seu despojo, tomarás para ti; e comerás o despojo dos teus inimigos, que te deu o Senhor teu Deus.
except the women and the stuff: and all the cattle, and whatever shall be in the city, and all the plunder you shall take as spoil for yourself, and shall eat all the plunder of your enemies whom the Lord your God gives you.
15 Assim farás a todas as cidades que estiverem mui longe de ti, que não forem das cidades destas nações.
Thus shall you do to all the cities that are very far off from you, not [being] of the cities of these nations which the Lord your God gives you to inherit their land.
16 Porém, das cidades destas nações, que o Senhor teu Deus te dá em herança, nenhuma coisa que tem fôlego deixarás com vida;
[Of these] you shall not take any thing alive;
17 Antes destrui-las-ás totalmente: aos heteus, e aos amorreus, e aos cananeus, e aos pherezeus, e aos heveus, e aos jebuseus, como te ordenou o Senhor teu Deus.
but you shall surely curse them, the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Gergesite; as the Lord your God commanded you:
18 Para que vos não ensinem a fazer conforme a todas as suas abominações, que fizeram a seus deuses, e pequeis contra o Senhor vosso Deus.
that they may not teach you to do all their abominations, which they did to their gods, and [so] you should sin before the Lord your God.
19 Quando sitiares uma cidade por muitos dias, pelejando contra ela para a tomar, não destruirás o seu arvoredo, metendo nele o machado, porque dele comerás: pelo que o não cortarás (pois o arvoredo do campo é o mantimento do homem), para que sirva de tranqueira diante de ti
And if you should besiege a city many days to prevail against it by war to take it, you shall not destroy its trees, by applying an iron tool to them, but you shall eat of it, and shall not cut it down: Is the tree that is in the field a man, to enter before you into the work of the siege?
20 Mas as árvores que souberes que não são árvores de comer, destrui-las-ás e corta-las-ás: e contra a cidade que guerrear contra ti edificarás tranqueiras, até que esta seja derribada.
But the tree which you know to be not fruit-bearing, this you shall destroy and cut down; and you shall construct a mound against the city, which makes war against you, until it be delivered up.
