Provérbios 20
1 O vinho é escarnecedor, a bebida forte alvoraçadora; e todo aquelle que n'elles errar nunca será sabio.
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And he that reeleth with it is not wise.
2 Como o bramido do leão é o terror do rei, o que o provoca a ira pecca contra a sua propria alma.
The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion; He who provoketh him sinneth against himself.
3 Honra é do homem desviar-se do pleito, mas todo o tolo se entremette n'elle.
It is an honor to a man to cease from strife; Bur every fool rusheth into it.
4 O preguiçoso não lavrará por causa do inverno, pelo que mendigará na sega, porém nada receberá.
The sluggard will not plough by reason of the cold; Therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5 Como as aguas profundas é o conselho no coração do homem; mas o homem d'intelligencia o tirará para fóra.
A design in the heart of a man is like deep waters; But a man of understanding draweth it out.
6 Cada um da multidão dos homens apregoa a sua beneficencia; porém o homem fiel, quem é o que o achará?
Many will proclaim their own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?
7 O justo anda na sua sinceridade; bemaventurados serão os seus filhos depois d'elle.
He who walketh in his integrity is a righteous man; Happy will be his children after him!
8 Assentando-se o rei no throno do juizo, com os seus olhos dissipa todo o mal.
The king, sitting upon the throne of judgment, Scattereth with his eyes all the wicked like chaff.
9 Quem podéra dizer: Purifiquei o meu coração, limpo estou de meu peccado!
Who can say, “I have kept my heart clean; I am free from my sin?”
10 Duas sortes de peso, e duas sortes de medida, são abominação ao Senhor, tanto uma como outra.
Divers weights and divers measures, —Both of them are an abomination to the LORD.
11 Até a creança se dará a conhecer pelas suas acções, se a sua obra será pura e recta
Even in childhood one maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his actions will be pure and right.
12 O ouvido que ouve, e o olho que vê, o Senhor os fez a ambos.
The ear that heareth, and the eye that seeth, —The LORD made them both.
13 Não ames o somno, para que não empobreças; abre os teus olhos, e te fartarás de pão
Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 Nada vale, nada vale, dirá o comprador, mas, indo-se, então se gabará.
“Bad! bad!” saith the buyer; But when he hath gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 Ha oiro e abundancia de rubins, mas os labios do conhecimento são joia preciosa.
There is gold and abundance of pearls; But the lips of knowledge are a precious vase.
16 Quando alguem fica por fiador do estranho, toma-lhe a sua roupa, e o penhora pela estranha.
Take his garment who is surety for another; Yea, take a pledge of him who is bound for a stranger.
17 Suave é ao homem o pão de mentira, mas depois a sua bocca se encherá de pedrinhas d'areia.
The bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.
18 Cada pensamento com conselho se confirma, e com conselhos prudentes faze a guerra.
Purposes are established by counsel; Therefore with good advice make war.
19 O que anda murmurando descobre o segredo; pelo que com o que afaga com seus beiços não te entremettas.
He who goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore associate not with him who keepeth open his lips.
20 O que a seu pae ou a sua mãe amaldiçoar, apagar-se-lhe-ha a sua lampada em trevas negras.
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in midnight darkness.
21 Adquirindo-se apressadamente a herança no principio, o seu fim não será bemdito.
A possession may be gotten hastily in the beginning, But in the end it will not be blessed.
22 Não digas: Vingar-me-hei do mal: espera pelo Senhor, e elle te livrará.
Say not thou, “I will repay evil;” Wait on the LORD, and he will help thee.
23 Duas sortes de peso são abominaveis ao Senhor, e balanças enganosas não são boas.
Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD, And a false balance is not good.
24 Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor: o homem, pois, como entenderá o seu caminho?
A man's steps are from the LORD; How, then, can a man understand his way?
25 Laço é para o homem engulir o que é sancto; e, feitos os votos, então inquirir.
It is a snare to a man to utter a vow rashly, And after vows to consider.
26 O rei sabio dissipa os impios e torna sobre elles a roda.
A wise king scattereth the wicked like chaff, And bringeth over them the wheel.
27 A alma do homem é a lampada do Senhor, que esquadrinha todo o mais intimo do ventre.
The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Which searcheth all the inner chambers of his body.
28 Benignidade e verdade guardam ao rei, e com benignidade sustem elle o seu throno.
Mercy and truth preserve the king; Yea, his throne is upholden by mercy.
29 O ornato dos mancebos é a sua força: e a belleza dos velhos as cãs.
The glory of young men is their strength, And the beauty of old men is the gray head.
30 Os vergões das feridas são a purificação dos maus, como tambem as pancadas que penetram até o mais intimo do ventre.
Wounding stripes are the remedy for a bad man; Yea, stripes which reach to the inner chambers of the body.
