Números 23

1 Então Balaão disse a Balac: Edifica-me aqui sete altares, e prepara-me aqui sete bezerros e sete carneiros.

Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars here for me and prepare seven bulls and seven rams.”

2 Fez pois Balac como Balaão dissera: e Balac e Balaão offereceram um bezerro e um carneiro sobre cada altar.

So Balak did as Balaam requested. Then Balak and Balaam offered a bull and a ram on every altar.

3 Então Balaão disse a Balac: Fica-te ao pé do teu holocausto, e eu irei; porventura o Senhor me sairá ao encontro, e o que me mostrar te notificarei. Então foi a um alto

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand at your burnt offering and I will go. Perhaps Yahweh will come to meet me. Whatever he shows me I will tell you.” So he went away to a hilltop with no trees.

4 E, encontrando-se Deus com Balaão, lhe disse este: Preparei sete altares, e offereci um bezerro e um carneiro sobre cada altar.

While he was on the hilltop, God met him, and Balaam said to him, “I have built seven altars, and I have offered up a bull and a ram on each one.”

5 Então o Senhor poz a palavra na bocca de Balaão, e disse: Torna-te para Balac, e falla assim.

Yahweh put a message in Balaam's mouth and said, “Return to Balak and speak to him.”

6 E, tornando para elle, eis que estava ao pé do seu holocausto, elle e todos os principes dos moabitas.

So Balaam returned to Balak, who was standing by his burnt offering, and all the leaders of Moab were with him.

7 Então alçou a sua parabola, e disse: Da Syria me mandou trazer Balac, rei dos moabitas, das montanhas do oriente, dizendo: Vem, amaldiçoa-me a Jacob; e vem, detesta a Israel.

Then Balaam began to speak his prophecy and said, “Balak has brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains. 'Come, curse Jacob for me,' he said. 'Come, defy Israel.'

8 Como amaldiçoarei o que Deus não amaldiçoa? e como detestarei, quando o Senhor não detesta?

How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I oppose those whom Yahweh does not oppose?

9 Porque do cume das penhas o vejo, e dos outeiros o contemplo: eis que este povo habitará só, e entre as gentes não será contado.

For from the top of the rocks I see him; from the hills I look at him. See, there is a people who live alone and do not consider themselves as just an ordinary nation.

10 Quem contará o pó de Jacob e o numero da quarta parte de Israel? a minha alma morra da morte dos justos, e seja o meu fim como o seu.

Who can count the dust of Jacob or number even only one-fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of a righteous person, and let my life's end be like his!”

11 Então disse Balac a Balaão: Que me fizeste? chamei-te para amaldiçoar os meus inimigos, mas eis que inteiramente os abençoaste.

Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but look, you have blessed them.”

12 E elle respondeu, e disse: Porventura não terei cuidado de fallar o que o Senhor poz na minha bocca?

Balaam answered and said, “Should I not be careful to say only what Yahweh puts in my mouth?”

13 Então Balac lhe disse: Rogo-te que venhas comigo a outro logar, d'onde o verás; verás sómente a ultima parte d'elle, mas a todo elle não verás: e amaldiçoa-m'o d'ali.

So Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place where you can see them. You will only see the nearest of them, not all of them. There you will curse them for me.”

14 Assim o tomou comsigo ao campo de Zophim, ao cume de Pisga: e edificou sete altares, e offereceu um bezerro e um carneiro sobre cada altar.

So he took Balaam into the field of Zophim, to the top of Mount Pisgah, and built seven more altars. He offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.

15 Então disse a Balac: Fica aqui ao pé do teu holocausto, e eu irei ali ao seu encontro.

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering, while I meet with Yahweh over there.”

16 E, encontrando-se o Senhor com Balaão, poz uma palavra na sua bocca, e disse: Torna para Balac, e falla assim.

So Yahweh met Balaam and put a message in his mouth. He said, “Return to Balak and give him my message.”

17 E, vindo a elle, eis-que estava ao pé do holocausto, e os principes dos moabitas com elle: disse-lhe pois Balac: Que coisa fallou o Senhor?

Balaam returned to him, and look, he was standing by his burnt offering, and the leaders of Moab were with him. Then Balak said to him, “What has Yahweh said?”

18 Então alçou a sua parabola, e disse: Levanta-te, Balac, e ouve: inclina os teus ouvidos a mim, filho de Zippor.

Balaam began his prophecy. He said, “Rise up, Balak, and hear. Listen to me, you son of Zippor.

19 Deus não é homem, para que minta; nem filho do homem, para que se arrependa: porventura diria elle, e não o faria? ou fallaria, e não o confirmaria?

God is not a man, that he should lie, Or a human being, that he should change his mind. Has he promised anything without doing it? Has he said he would do something without carrying it out?

20 Eis que recebi mandado de abençoar: pois elle tem abençoado, e eu não o posso revogar.

Look, I have been commanded to bless. God has given a blessing, and I cannot reverse it.

21 Não viu iniquidade em Israel, nem contemplou maldade em Jacob: o Senhor seu Deus é com elle, e n'elle, e entre elles se ouve o alarido d'um rei.

He has seen no hardship in Jacob or trouble in Israel. Yahweh their God is with them, and shouts for their king are among them.

22 Deus os tirou do Egypto; as suas forças são como as do unicornio.

God brought them out of Egypt with strength like that of a wild ox.

23 Pois contra Jacob não vale encantamento, nem adivinhação contra Israel: n'este tempo se dirá de Jacob e d'Israel: Que coisas Deus tem obrado!

There is no sorcery that works against Jacob, and no fortune-telling harms Israel. Instead, it must be said about Jacob and Israel, 'Look what God has done!'

24 Eis que o povo se levantará como leoa, e se exalçará como leão: não se deitará até que coma a presa, e beba o sangue de mortos

Look, the people rise like a lioness, as a lion emerges and attacks. He does not lie down until he eats his victim and drinks the blood of what he has killed.”

25 Então Balac disse a Balaão: Nem totalmente o amaldiçoarás, nem totalmente o abençoarás.

Then Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them or bless them at all.”

26 Porém Balaão respondeu, e disse a Balac: Não te fallei eu, dizendo: Tudo o que o Senhor fallar aquillo farei?

But Balaam answered and said to Balak, “Did I not tell you that I must say all that Yahweh tells me to say?”

27 Disse mais Balac a Balaão: Ora vem, e te levarei a outro logar: porventura bem parecerá aos olhos de Deus que d'ali m'o amaldiçoes.

So Balak replied to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God for you to curse them there for me.”

28 Então Balac levou Balaão comsigo ao cume de Peor, que olha para a banda do deserto.

So Balak took Balaam to the top of Mount Peor, which looks down on the wilderness.

29 Balaão disse a Balac: Edifica-me aqui sete altares, e prepara-me aqui sete bezerros e sete carneiros.

Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here and prepare seven bulls and seven rams.”

30 Balac pois fez como dissera Balaão; e offereceu um bezerro e um carneiro sobre cada altar.

So Balak did as Balaam had said; he offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.
