Números 14
1 Entao levantou-se toda a congregação, e alçaram a sua voz: e o povo chorou n'aquella mesma noite.
Then everybody there cried out loud all night.
2 E todos os filhos d'Israel murmuraram contra Moysés e contra Aarão; e toda a congregação lhe disse: Ah se morrêramos na terra do Egypto! ou, ah se morrêramos n'este deserto!
All the Israelites went and complained to Moses and Aaron, telling them, “If only we'd died in Egypt, or here in this desert!
3 E porque o Senhor nos traz a esta terra, para cairmos á espada, e para que nossas mulheres e nossas creanças sejam por presa? não nos seria melhor voltar-mos ao Egypto?
Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to get us killed? Our wives and children will be captured and taken away as slaves! Wouldn't we be better off going back to Egypt?”
4 E diziam um ao outro: Levantemo-nos um capitão, e voltemos ao Egypto.
They said to one another, “Let's choose a new leader us and go back to Egypt.”
5 Então Moysés e Aarão cairam sobre os seus rostos perante todo o ajuntamento dos filhos de Israel.
Moses and Aaron fellfacedown on the ground in front of all the assembled Israelites.
6 E Josué, filho de Nun, e Caleb filho de Jefoné, dos que espiaram a terra, rasgaram os seus vestidos.
Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, were there. They had been part of the group who had gone to spy out the land. They ripped their clothes,
7 E fallaram a toda a congregação dos filhos d'Israel, dizendo: A terra pelo meio da qual passámos a espiar é terra muito boa
and told the Israelites, “The country we traveled through and explored has very good land.
8 Se o Senhor se agradar de nós, então nos porá n'esta terra, e nol-a dará: terra que mana leite e mel
If the Lord is happy with us, he will take us there and give it to us, a land that's so productive it's like flowing with milk and honey.
9 Tão sómente não sejaes rebeldes contra o Senhor, e não temaes o povo d'esta terra, porquanto são elles nosso pão: retirou-se d'elles o seu amparo, e o Senhor é comnosco; não os temaes.
Don't rebel and fight against the Lord. You don't need to be afraid of the people living there in the country—we can take them easily! They're defenseless and the Lord is with us. Don't be frightened of them!”
10 Então disse toda a congregação que os apedrejassem com pedras: porém a gloria do Senhor appareceu na tenda da congregação a todos os filhos d'Israel.
In reply all the people shouted out, “Stone them!” But the glory of the Lord suddenly appeared in the Tent of Meeting, right in the middle of the Israelites.
11 E disse o Senhor a Moysés: Até quando me provocará este povo? e até quando me não crerão por todos os signaes que fiz no meio d'elles?
The Lord told Moses, “How long are these people going to reject me? How long are these people going to refuse to trust in me despite all the miracles I have done right in front of them?
12 Com pestilencia o ferirei, e o rejeitarei: e te farei a ti povo maior e mais forte do que este.
I'm going to make them sick with a disease and kill them. Then I will make you into a nation that's greater and strong than them.”
13 E disse Moysés ao Senhor: Assim os egypcios o ouvirão; porquanto com a tua força fizeste subir este povo do meio d'elles.
But Moses told the Lord, “The Egyptians will find out about it! It was by your power that you led the Israelites out from among them.
14 E dirão aos moradores d'esta terra, os que ouviram que tu, ó Senhor, estás no meio d'este povo, que de cara a cara, ó Senhor, lhes appareces, que tua nuvem está sobre elles, e que vaes adiante d'elles n'uma columna de nuvem de dia, e n'uma columna de fogo de noite.
They will tell the people living in this country all about it. They've already heard that you, Lord, are with us Israelites, that you, Lord, are seen face to face, that your cloud stands guard over them, and that you lead them by a pillar of cloud during day and a pillar of fire at night.
15 E matarias este povo como a um só homem? as gentes pois, que ouviram a tua fama, fallarão, dizendo:
If you kill all these people in one go, the nations who have heard about you will say,
16 Porquanto o Senhor não podia pôr este povo na terra que lhes tinha jurado; por isso os matou no deserto.
‘The Lord killed these people in the desert because he wasn't able to take them to the country he promised to give them. He's killed them all in desert!’
17 Agora, pois, rogo-te que a força do meu Senhor se engrandeça; como tens fallado, dizendo:
Now, Lord, please demonstrate the extent of your power just as you have said:
18 O Senhor é longanimo, e grande em beneficencia, que perdôa a iniquidade e a transgressão, que o culpado não tem por innocente, e visita a iniquidade dos paes sobre os filhos até á terceira e quarta geração.
The Lord is slow to become angry and is full of trustworthy love, forgiving sin and rebellion. However, he will not allow the guilty to go unpunished, bringing the consequences of the parents' sin on their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
19 Perdôa pois a iniquidade d'este povo, segundo a grandeza da tua benignidade: e como tambem perdoaste a este povo desde a terra do Egypto até aqui.
Please forgive the sin of these people since your trustworthy love is so great, in the same way that you have forgiven them from the time they left Egypt until now.”
20 E disse o Senhor: Conforme á tua palavra lhe perdoei.
“I have forgiven them as you asked,” the Lord replied.
21 Porém tão certamente como eu vivo, que a gloria do Senhor encherá toda a terra,
“But even so, as I live and as the whole earth is filled with the Lord's glory,
22 E que todos os homens que viram a minha gloria e os meus signaes, que fiz no Egypto e no deserto; e me tentaram estas dez vezes, e não obedeceram á minha voz;
not a single one of the those who saw my glory and the miracles I did in Egypt and in the desert—but provoked me and refused to obey me time and time again—
23 Não verão a terra de que a seus paes jurei, e até nenhum d'aquelles que me provocaram a verá.
not a single one of them is ever going to see the country I promised to give their forefathers. None of those who rejected me will see it.
24 Porém o meu servo Caleb, porquanto n'elle houve outro espirito, e perseverou em seguir-me, eu o levarei á terra em que entrou, e a sua semente a possuirá em herança:
But because my servant Caleb has a totally different spirit and is fully committed to me, I will lead him to the country he visited, and his descendants will own it.
25 E os amalequitas e os cananeos habitam no valle: tornae-vos ámanhã, e caminhae para o deserto pelo caminho do Mar Vermelho.
Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, tomorrow you are to turn around and head back into the desert, taking the route towards the Red Sea.”
26 Depois fallou o Senhor a Moysés e a Aarão, dizendo:
The Lord told Moses and Aaron,
27 Até quando soffrerei esta má congregação, que murmura contra mim? tenho ouvido as murmurações dos filhos de Israel, com que murmuram contra mim.
“How much longer are these wicked people going to criticize me? I've heard what they're saying, making complaints against me.
28 Dize-lhes: Assim eu vivo, diz o Senhor, que, como fallastes aos meus ouvidos, assim farei a vós outros.
Go and tell them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, I'll do just what I heard you say you wanted, believe me!
29 N'este deserto cairão os vossos cadaveres, como tambem todos os que de vós foram contados segundo toda a vossa conta, de vinte annos e para cima, os que d'entre vós contra mim murmurastes;
All of you will die in this desert, everyone who was registered in the census that counted those aged twenty or over, because you made complaints against me.
30 Não entrareis na terra, pela qual levantei a minha mão que vos faria habitar n'ella, salvo Caleb, filho de Jefoné, e Josué, filho de Nun
Absolutely none of you will enter the country I promised to give you to live in, except for Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
31 Mas os vossos filhos, de que dizeis: Por presa serão, metterei n'ella; e elles saberão da terra que vós desprezastes.
However, I will take your children—those you said would be taken away as plunder—into the country you rejected, and they will appreciate it.
32 Porém, quanto a vós, os vossos cadaveres cairão n'este deserto.
But you—you are all going to die in this desert.
33 E vossos filhos pastorearão n'este deserto quarenta annos, e levarão sobre si as vossas fornicações, até que os vossos cadaveres se consumam n'este deserto.
Your children will wander in the desert for forty years, suffering because of your lack of trust until all your bodies lie buried in the desert.
34 Segundo o numero dos dias em que espiastes esta terra, quarenta dias, por cada dia um anno, levareis sobre vós as vossas iniquidades quarenta annos, e conhecereis o meu apartamento.
Just as you explored the country for forty days, so shall your punishment for your sins be forty years, a year for every day, and you will see what happens when I oppose you.
35 Eu, o Senhor, fallei: se assim não fizer a toda esta má congregação, que se levantou contra mim, n'este deserto se consumirão, e ahi fallecerão.
I, the Lord, have spoken! Just see if I won't do this to all these wicked Israelites who have got together to oppose me! They will end their lives in the desert—they will die there.’”
36 E os homens que Moysés mandara a espiar a terra, e que, voltando, fizeram murmurar toda a congregação contra elle, infamando a terra,
The men that Moses had sent to explore the country—those who came back and because they gave a bad report they made all the Israelites complain against the Lord—
37 Aquelles mesmos homens, que infamaram a terra, morreram da praga perante o Senhor.
those men who gave the bad report died before the Lord from plague.
38 Mas Josué, filho de Nun, e Caleb, filho de Jefoné, que eram dos homens que foram espiar a terra, ficaram com vida.
The only ones who lived were Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh of those who went to explore the country.
39 E fallou Moysés estas palavras a todos os filhos de Israel: então o povo se contristou muito.
When Moses told the Israelites what the Lord had said they were very, very sad.
40 E levantaram-se pela manhã de madrugada, e subiram ao cume do monte, dizendo: Eis-nos aqui, e subiremos ao logar que o Senhor tem dito; porquanto havemos peccado.
They got up early the next morning planning to go into the hill country. “Yes we really did sin,” they said, “but now we're here and we'll go where the Lord told us.”
41 Mas Moysés disse: Porque quebrantaes o mandado do Senhor? pois isso não prosperará.
But Moses objected. “Why are you disobeying the Lord's command? You won't succeed in your plan!
42 Não subaes, pois o Senhor não estará no meio de vós, para que não sejaes feridos diante dos vossos inimigos.
Don't try and go, otherwise you will be killed by your enemies, because the Lord isn't with you.
43 Porque os amalequitas e os cananeos estão ali diante da vossa face, e caireis á espada: pois, porquanto vos desviastes do Senhor, o Senhor não será comvosco.
The Amalekites and Canaanites living there will attack you, and you will die by the sword. Because you rejected the Lord, he won't help you.”
44 Comtudo, temerariamente, tentaram subir ao cume do monte: mas a arca do concerto do Senhor e Moysés não se apartaram do meio do arraial.
But they were arrogant and went up into the hill country, even though Moses and the Ark of the Lord's Agreement didn't move from the camp.
45 Então desceram os amalequitas e os cananeos, que habitavam na montanha, e os feriram, derrotando-os até Horma.
The Amalekites and Canaanites who lived there in the hill country came down and attacked the Israelites and defeated them, and chased them all the way to Hormah.
