Jó 38
1 Depois d'isto o Senhor respondeu a Job d'um redemoinho, e disse:
Then spake Jehovah to Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
2 Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento?
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Agora cinge os teus lombos, como homem; e perguntar-te-hei, e tu me ensina.
Gird up thy loins like a man! I will ask thee, and answer thou me!
4 Onde estavas tu, quando eu fundava a terra? faze-m'o saber, se tens intelligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding!
5 Quem lhe poz as medidas? se tu o sabes; ou quem estendeu sobre ella o cordel?
Who fixed its dimensions, that thou shouldst know it! Or who stretched out the line upon it?
6 Sobre que estão fundadas as suas bases? ou quem assentou a sua pedra da esquina,
Upon what were its foundations fixed? And who laid its corner-stone,
7 Quando as estrellas da alva juntas alegremente cantavam, e todos os filhos de Deus jubilavam?
When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Ou quem encerrou o mar com portas, quando trasbordou e saiu da madre;
And who shut up the sea with doors, When it burst forth as from the womb?
9 Quando eu puz as nuvens por sua vestidura, e a escuridão por envolvedouro?
When I made the clouds its mantle, And thick darkness its swaddling-band;
10 Quando passei sobre elle o meu decreto, e lhe puz portas e ferrolhos;
When I appointed for it my bound, And fixed for it bars and doors;
11 E disse: Até aqui virás, e não mais adiante, e aqui se quebrarão as tuas ondas empolladas?
And said, Thus far shalt thou come, and no farther, And here shall thy proud waves be stayed!
12 Ou desde os teus dias déste ordem á madrugada? ou mostraste á alva o seu logar;
Hast thou, in thy life, given charge to the morning, Or caused the day-spring to know its place,
13 Para que pegasse dos fins da terra, e os impios fossem sacudidos d'ella;
That it should lay hold of the ends of the earth, And shake the wicked out of it?
14 E se transformasse como o barro, sob o sello, e se pozessem como vestidos;
It is changed as clay by the seal; And all things stand forth as in rich apparel.
15 E dos impios se desvie a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebrante;
But from the wicked their light is withheld, And the high-raised arm is broken.
16 Ou entraste tu até ás origens do mar? ou passeaste no mais profundo do abysmo?
Hast thou visited the springs of the sea, And walked through the recesses of the deep?
17 Ou descobriram-se-te as portas da morte? ou viste as portas da sombra da morte?
Have the gates of death been disclosed to thee, And hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18 Ou com o teu entendimento chegaste ás larguras da terra? faze-m'o saber, se sabes tudo isto.
Hast thou surveyed the breadth of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all!
19 Onde está o caminho para onde mora a luz? e, quanto ás trevas, onde está o seu logar;
Where is the way to the abode of light? And darkness—where is its dwelling-place?
20 Para que as tragas aos seus limites, e para que saibas as veredas da sua casa?
That thou shouldst lead it to its boundary, And that thou shouldst know the paths to its mansion!
21 Acaso tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e por ser grande o numero dos teus dias?
Surely thou knowest; for thou wast then born! And the number of thy years is great!
22 Ou entraste tu até aos thesouros da neve? e viste os thesouros da saraiva,
Hast thou visited the storehouses of the snow, Or seen the treasuries of the hail,
23 Que eu retenho até do tempo da angustia, até ao dia da peleja e da guerra?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, —Against the day of battle and war?
24 Onde está o caminho em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra?
What is the way to where light is distributed, And the east wind spread abroad upon the earth?
25 Quem abriu para a inundação um leito, e um caminho para os relampagos dos trovões;
Who hath prepared channels for the rain, And a path for the thunder-flash,
26 Para chover sobre a terra, onde não ha ninguem, e no deserto, em que não ha gente;
To give rain to the land without an inhabitant, To the wilderness wherein is no man;
27 Para fartar a terra deserta e assolada, e para fazer crescer os renovos da herva?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, And cause the tender herb to spring forth?
28 A chuva porventura tem pae? ou quem géra as gottas do orvalho,
Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 De cujo ventre procede o gelo? e quem gera a geada do céu?
Out of whose womb came the ice? And who hath gendered the hoar-frost of heaven?
30 Como debaixo de pedra as aguas se escondem: e a superficie do abysmo se coalha.
The waters are hid as under stone, And the face of the deep becometh solid.
31 Ou poderás tu ajuntar as delicias das sete estrellas, ou soltar os atilhos do Orion?
Canst thou fasten the bands of the Pleiades, Or loosen the chains of Orion?
32 Ou produzir as constellações a seu tempo? e guiar a Ursa com seus filhos?
Canst thou lead forth the Signs in their season, Or guide the Bear with her sons?
33 Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus? ou podes dispor do dominio d'elles sobre a terra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Hast thou appointed their dominion over the earth?
34 Ou podes levantar a tua voz até ás nuvens, para que a abundancia das aguas te cubra?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, So that abundance of waters will cover thee?
35 Ou enviarás aos raios para que saiam, e te digam: Eis-nos aqui?
Canst thou send forth lightnings, so that they will go, And say to thee, “Here we are”?
36 Quem poz a sabedoria nas entranhas? ou quem deu ao sentido o entendimento?
Who hath put understanding in the reins, And given intelligence to the mind?
37 Quem numerará as nuvens pela sabedoria? ou os odres dos céus, quem os abaixará,
Who numbereth the clouds in wisdom? And who poureth out the bottles of heaven,
38 Quando se funde o pó n'uma massa, e se apegam os torrões uns aos outros?
When the dust floweth into a molten mass, And the clods cleave fast together?
39 Porventura caçarás tu preza para a leôa? ou fartaras a fome dos filhos dos leões,
Canst thou hunt prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the hunger of the young lions,
40 Quando se agacham nos covis, e estão á espreita nas covas?
When they couch in their dens, And lie in wait in the thicket?
41 Quem prepara aos corvos o seu alimento, quando os seus pintainhos gritam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem de comer?
Who provideth for the raven his food, When his young ones cry unto God, While they wander about without food?
