Esdras 4

1 Ouvindo pois os adversarios de Judah e Benjamin que os que tornaram do captiveiro, edificavam o templo ao Senhor Deus d'Israel,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people from the exile were building a temple to the LORD, the God of Israel;

2 Chegaram-se a Zorobabel e aos chefes dos paes, e disseram-lhes: Deixae-nos edificar comvosco, porque, como vós, buscaremos a vosso Deus; como tambem já lhe sacrificamos desde os dias d'Asar-haddon, rei d'Assur, que nos fez subir aqui.

then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of ancestral houses, and said to them, "Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as you do; and we sacrifice to him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here."

3 Porém Zorobabel, e Josué, e os outros chefes dos paes d'Israel lhes disseram: Não convem que vós e nós edifiquemos casa a nosso Deus; mas nós sós a edificaremos ao Senhor, Deus d'Israel, como nos ordenou o rei Cyro, rei da Persia

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of ancestral houses of Israel, said to them, "You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as king Koresh the king of Persia has commanded us."

4 Todavia o povo da terra debilitava as mãos do povo de Judah, e inquietava-os no edificar.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 E alugaram contra elles conselheiros, para frustrarem o seu conselho, todos os dias de Cyro, rei da Persia, até ao reinado de Dario, rei da Persia.

and hired counselors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Koresh king of Persia, even until the reign of Daryavesh king of Persia.

6 E sob o reino d'Ahasuero, no principio do seu reinado, escreveram uma accusação contra os habitantes de Judah e de Jerusalem.

In the reign of Achashyerosh, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 E nos dias d'Artaxerxes escreveu Bislam, Mithredath, Tabeel, e os outros da sua companhia, a Artaxerxes, rei da Persia: e a carta estava escripta em caracteres syriacos, e na lingua syriaca.

In the days of Artachshasta wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, to Artachshasta king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramaic, and set forth in the Aramaic language.

8 Escreveram pois Rhehum, o chanceller, e Simsai, o escrivão, uma carta contra Jerusalem, ao rei Artaxerxes, n'esta maneira:

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artachshasta the king as follows:

9 Então escreveu Rhehum, o chanceller, e Simsai, o escrivão, e os outros da sua companhia: os dinaitas e apharsathehitas, tarpelitas, apharsitas, archevitas, babylonios, susanchitas, dehavitas, elamitas.

[From] Rehum the commander, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

10 E os outros povos, que transportou o grande e afamado Asnappar, e que elle fez habitar na cidade de Samaria, e os outros d'áquem do rio, e em tal tempo.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River.

11 Este pois é o teor da carta que ao rei Artaxerxes lhe mandaram: "Teus servos, os homens d'áquem do rio, e em tal tempo.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent to Artachshasta the king: Your servants the men beyond the River. And now,

12 Saiba o rei que os judeos que subiram de ti vieram a nós a Jerusalem, e edificam aquella rebelde e malvada cidade, e vão restaurando os seus muros, e reparando os seus fundamentos.

be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and wicked city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

13 Agora saiba o rei que, se aquella cidade se reedificar, e os muros se restaurarem, não pagarão os direitos, os tributos e as rendas; e assim se damnificará a fazenda dos reis.

Be it known now to the king that if this city is built, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.

14 Agora pois, porquanto assalariados somos do paço, e não nos convem ver a deshonra do rei, por isso mandamos dar aviso ao rei,

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not appropriate for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and informed the king;

15 Para que se busque no livro das chronicas de teus paes, e acharás no livro das chronicas, e saberás que aquella foi uma cidade rebelde, e damnosa aos reis e provincias, e que n'ella fizeram rebellião de tempos antigos; pelo que foi aquella cidade destruida.

that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers: so you shall find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

16 Nós pois fazemos notorio ao rei que, se aquella cidade se reedificar, e os seus muros se restaurarem, d'esta maneira não terás porção alguma d'esta banda do rio.

We inform the king that, if this city be built, and the walls finished, by this means you shall have no portion beyond the River.

17 E o rei enviou esta resposta a Rhehum, o chanceller, e a Simsai, o escrivão, e aos mais da sua companhia, que habitavam em Samaria; como tambem ao resto dos que estavam d'além do rio: Paz hajaes! e em tal tempo.

Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who dwell in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace, and so forth.

18 A carta que nos enviastes foi explicitamente lida diante de mim.

The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.

19 E, ordenando-o eu, buscaram e acharam, que de tempos antigos aquella cidade se levantou contra os reis, e n'ella se tem feito rebellião e sedição.

I decreed, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.

20 Tambem houve reis poderosos sobre Jerusalem que d'além do rio dominaram em todo o logar, e se lhes pagaram direitos, e tributos, e rendas.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid to them.

21 Agora pois dae ordem para impedirdes aquelles homens, afim de que não se edifique aquella cidade, até que se dê uma ordem por mim.

Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built, until a decree shall be made by me.

22 E guardae-vos de commetterdes erro n'isto; porque cresceria o damno para prejuizo dos reis?

Take heed that you not be slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 Então, depois que a copia da carta do rei Artaxerxes se leu perante Rhehum, e Simsai, o escrivão, e seus companheiros, apressadamente foram elles a Jerusalem, aos judeos, e os impediram á força de braço e com violencia.

Then when the copy of king Artachshasta's letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Então cessou a obra da casa de Deus, que estava em Jerusalem: e cessou até ao anno segundo do reinado de Dario rei da Persia.

Then ceased the work of God's house which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Daryavesh king of Persia.
