Eclesiastes 1
1 Palavras do prégador, filho de David, rei em Jerusalem:
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 Vaidade de vaidades! diz o prégador, vaidade de vaidades! é tudo vaidade.
"Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher; "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."
3 Que vantagem tem o homem, de todo o seu trabalho, que elle trabalha debaixo do sol?
What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?
4 Uma geração vae, e outra geração vem; porém a terra para sempre permanece.
One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.
5 E nasce o sol, e põe-se o sol, e aspira ao seu logar d'onde nasceu.
The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.
6 Vae para o sul, e faz o seu giro para o norte; continuamente vae girando o vento, e volta o vento sobre os seus giros.
The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.
7 Todos os ribeiros vão para o mar, e comtudo o mar não se enche: para o logar para onde os ribeiros vão, para ali tornam elles a ir
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.
8 Todas estas coisas se cançam tanto, que ninguem o póde declarar: os olhos se não fartam de vêr, nem se enchem os ouvidos de ouvir.
All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 O que foi isso é o que ha de ser; e o que se fez isso se fará: de modo que nada ha de novo debaixo do sol.
That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10 Ha alguma coisa de que se possa dizer: Vês isto, é novo? já foi nos seculos passados, que foram antes de nós.
Is there a thing of which it may be said, "Look, this is new?" It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.
11 Já não ha lembrança das coisas que precederam, e das coisas que hão de ser tambem d'ellas não haverá lembrança, nos que hão de ser depois.
There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.
12 Eu, o prégador, fui rei sobre Israel em Jerusalem.
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 E appliquei o meu coração a esquadrinhar, e a informar-me com sabedoria de tudo quanto succede debaixo do céu: esta enfadonha occupação deu Deus aos filhos dos homens, para n'ella os exercitar.
I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.
14 Attentei para todas as obras que se fazem debaixo do sol, e eis que tudo era vaidade e afflicção d'espirito.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and look, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
15 Aquillo que é torto não se póde endireitar; aquillo que falta não se póde contar.
That which is crooked can't be made straight; and that which is lacking can't be counted.
16 Fallei eu com o meu coração, dizendo: Eis que eu me engrandeci, e augmentei em sabedoria, sobre todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalem: e o meu coração contemplou abundantemente a sabedoria e a sciencia.
I said to myself, "Look, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge."
17 E appliquei o meu coração a entender a sabedoria e a sciencia, os desvarios e as doidices, e vim a saber que tambem isto era afflicção d'espirito.
I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.
18 Porque na muita sabedoria ha muito enfado; e o que se augmenta em sciencia, accrescenta o trabalho.
For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
