Eclesiastes 2
1 Disse eu no meu coração: Ora vem, eu te provarei com alegria, attenta pois para o bem; porém eis que tambem isto era vaidade.
Therfor Y seide in myn hertez, Y schal go, and Y schal flowe in delicis, and Y schal vse goodis; and Y siy also that this was vanyte.
2 Ao riso disse: Estás doido; e á alegria: De que serve esta?
And leiyyng Y arrettide errour, and Y seide to ioye, What art thou disseyued in veyn?
3 Busquei no meu coração como me daria ao vinho (regendo porém o meu coração com sabedoria), e como reteria a loucura, até vêr o que seria melhor que os filhos dos homens fizessem debaixo do céu, durante o numero dos dias de sua vida.
I thouyte in myn herte to withdrawe my fleisch fro wyn, that Y schulde lede ouer my soule to wisdom, and that Y schulde eschewe foli, til Y schulde se, what were profitable to the sones of men; in which dede the noumbre of daies of her lijf vndur the sunne is nedeful.
4 Fiz para mim obras magnificas: edifiquei para mim casas: plantei para mim vinhas.
Y magnefiede my werkis, Y bildide housis to me, and Y plauntide vynes; Y made yerdis and orcherdis,
5 Fiz para mim hortas e jardins, e plantei n'elles arvores de toda a especie de fructa.
and Y settide tho with the trees of al kynde;
6 Fiz para mim tanques d'aguas, para regar com elles o bosque em que reverdeciam as arvores.
and Y made cisternes of watris, for to watre the wode of trees growynge.
7 Adquiri servos e servas, e tive filhos de casa; tambem tive grande possessão de vaccas e ovelhas, mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalem.
I hadde in possessioun seruauntis and handmaidis; and Y hadde myche meynee, and droues of grete beestis, and grete flockis of scheep, ouer alle men that weren bifore me in Jerusalem.
8 Amontoei tambem para mim prata e oiro, e as joias de reis e das provincias; provi-me de cantores e cantoras, e das delicias dos filhos dos homens: d'instrumentos de musica, e de toda a sorte d'instrumentos.
Y gaderide togidere to me siluer and gold, and the castels of kingis and of prouyncis; Y made to me syngeris and syngeressis, and delicis of the sones of men, and cuppis and vessels in seruyce, to helde out wynes;
9 E engrandeci, e augmentei mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalem: perseverou tambem comigo a minha sabedoria.
and Y passide in richessis alle men, that weren bifor me in Jerusalem. Also wisdom dwellide stabli with me,
10 E tudo quanto desejaram os meus olhos não lh'o neguei, nem retive o meu coração d'alegria alguma; mas o meu coração se alegrou de todo o meu trabalho, e esta foi a minha porção de todo o meu trabalho.
and alle thingis whiche myn iyen desiriden, Y denyede not to hem; nether Y refreynede myn herte, that ne it vside al lust, and delitide it silf in these thingis whiche I hadde maad redi; and Y demyde this my part, if Y vside my trauel.
11 E olhei eu para todas as obras que fizeram as minhas mãos, como tambem para o trabalho que eu, trabalhando, tinha feito, e eis que tudo era vaidade e afflicção d'espirito, e que proveito nenhum havia debaixo do sol.
And whanne Y hadde turned me to alle werkis whiche myn hondys hadden maad, and to the trauels in whiche Y hadde swet in veyn, Y siy in alle thingis vanyte and turment of the soule, and that no thing vndir sunne dwellith stabli.
12 Então passei á contemplação da sabedoria, e dos desvarios, e da doidice; porque que fará o homem que seguir ao rei? o que outros já fizeram;
I passide to biholde wisdom, errours, and foli; Y seide, What is a man, that he may sue the king, his maker?
13 Então vi eu que a sabedoria é mais excellente do que a estulticia, quanto a luz é mais excellente do que as trevas.
And Y siy, that wisdom yede so mych bifor foli, as miche as liyt is dyuerse fro derknessis.
14 Os olhos do sabio estão na sua cabeça, mas o louco anda em trevas: tambem então entendi eu que o mesmo successo lhes succede a todos.
The iyen of a wijs man ben in his heed, a fool goith in derknessis; and Y lernede, that o perisching was of euer either.
15 Pelo que eu disse no meu coração: Como succeder ao tolo, assim me succederá a mim; porque pois então busquei eu mais a sabedoria? Então disse no meu coração que tambem isto era vaidade.
And Y seide in myn herte, If o deth schal be bothe of the fool and of me, what profitith it to me, that Y yaf more bisynesse to wisdom? And Y spak with my soule, and perseyuede, that this also was vanyte.
16 Porque nunca haverá mais lembrança do sabio do que do tolo; porquanto de tudo quanto agora ha nos dias futuros total esquecimento haverá. E como morre o sabio? assim como o tolo.
For mynde of a wijs man schal not be, in lijk maner as nether of a fool with outen ende, and tymes to comynge schulen hile alle thingis togidere with foryetyng; a lerned man dieth in lijk maner and an vnlerned man.
17 Pelo que aborreci esta vida, porque a obra que se faz debaixo do sol me parece má; porque tudo é vaidade e afflicção d'espirito.
And therfor it anoiede me of my lijf, seynge that alle thingis vndur sunne ben yuele, and that alle thingis ben vanyte and turment of the spirit.
18 Tambem eu aborreci todo o meu trabalho, em que eu trabalhei debaixo do sol, visto que eu havia de deixal-o ao homem que viesse depois de mim.
Eft Y curside al my bisynesse, bi which Y trauelide moost studiousli vndur sunne, and Y schal haue an eir after me,
19 Porque quem sabe se será sabio ou tolo? todavia se assenhoreará sobre todo o meu trabalho em que trabalhei, e em que me houve sabiamente debaixo do sol; tambem isto é vaidade.
whom Y knowe not, whether he schal be wijs ether a fool; and he schal be lord in my trauels, for whiche Y swatte greetli, and was bisi; and is ony thing so veyn?
20 Pelo que eu me appliquei a fazer que o meu coração perdesse a esperança de todo o trabalho, em que trabalhei debaixo do sol.
Wherfor Y ceesside, and myn herte forsook for to trauele ferthere vnder sunne.
21 Porque ha homem que trabalha com sabedoria, e sciencia, e destreza; todavia deixará o seu trabalho, como porção sua, a um homem que não trabalhou n'elle: tambem isto é vaidade e grande enfado.
For whi whanne another man trauelith in wisdom, and techyng, and bisynesse, he leeueth thingis getun to an idel man; and therfor this is vanyte, and greet yuel.
22 Porque, que mais tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho, e fadiga do seu coração, em que elle anda trabalhando debaixo do sol?
For whi what schal it profite to a man of al his trauel, and turment of spirit, bi which he was turmentid vndur sunne?
23 Porque todos os seus dias são dôres, e a sua occupação é vexação; até de noite não descança o seu coração: tambem isto é vaidade.
Alle hise daies ben ful of sorewis and meschefs, and bi nyyt he restith not in soule; and whether this is not vanyte?
24 Não é pois bom para o homem que coma e beba, e que faça gozar a sua alma do bem do seu trabalho? tambem eu vi que isto vem da mão de Deus.
Whether it is not betere to ete and drynke, and to schewe to hise soule goodis of hise trauels? and this thing is of the hond of God.
25 (Porque quem pode comer, ou quem o pode gozar melhor do que eu?).
Who schal deuoure so, and schal flowe in delicis, as Y dide?
26 Porque ao homem que é bom diante d'elle dá Deus sabedoria e conhecimento e alegria, porém ao peccador dá trabalho, para que elle ajunte, e amontoe, para o dar ao bom perante a sua face. Tambem isto é vaidade e afflicção d'espirito.
God yaf wisdom, and kunnyng, and gladnesse to a good man in his siyt; but he yaf turment, and superflu bisynesse to a synnere, that he encreesse, and gadere togidere, and yyue to hym that plesith God; but also this is vanyte, and veyn bisynesse of soule.
