Eclesiastes 12
1 Lembra-te do teu Creador nos dias da tua mocidade, antes que venham os maus dias, e cheguem os annos dos quaes venhas a dizer: Não tenho n'elles contentamento:
Remember also thy Creator in the days of thy youth, or ever the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2 Antes que se escureçam o sol, e a luz, e a lua, e as estrellas, e tornem a vir as nuvens depois da chuva:
or ever the sun, and the light, and the moon, and the stars, be darkened, and the clouds return after the rain:
3 No dia em que tremerem os guardas da casa, e se encurvarem os fortes varões, e cessarem os moedores, por já serem poucos, e se escurecerem os que olham pelas janellas;
in the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 E as duas portas da rua se fecharem por causa do baixo ruido da moedura, e se levantar á voz das aves, e todas as vozes do canto se encurvarem:
and the door shall be shut in the street; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one shall rise up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low;
5 Como tambem quando temerem os logares altos, e houver espantos no caminho, e florescer a amendoeira, e o gafanhoto o carregar, e perecer o appetite, porque o homem se vae á sua eterna casa, e os pranteadores andarão rodeando pela praça.
yea, they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and terrors [shall be] in the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and the caper-berry shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6 Antes que se quebre a cadeia de prata, e se despedace o copo d'oiro, e se despedace o cantaro junto á fonte, e se despedace a roda junto ao poço,
or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern;
7 E o pó voltar á terra, como o era, e o espirito voltar a Deus, que o deu.
and the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit return unto God who gave it.
8 Vaidade de vaidade, diz o prégador, tudo é vaidade.
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; all is vanity.
9 E, quanto mais o prégador foi sabio, tanto mais sabedoria ao povo ensinou, e attentou, e esquadrinhou, e compoz muitos proverbios.
And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs.
10 Procurou o prégador achar palavras agradaveis; e o escripto é a rectidão, palavras de verdade.
The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written uprightly, [even] words of truth.
11 As palavras dos sabios são como aguilhões, e como pregos, bem affixados pelos mestres das congregações, que nos foram dados pelo unico Pastor.
The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails well fastened are [the words of] the masters of assemblies, [which] are given from one shepherd.
12 E, de mais d'isto, filho meu, attenta: não ha limite para fazer livros, e o muito estudar enfado é da carne.
And furthermore, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 De tudo o que se tem ouvido, o fim da coisa é: Teme a Deus, e guarda os seus mandamentos; porque isto é o dever de todo o homem.
[This is] the end of the matter; all hath been heard: fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole [duty] of man.
14 Porque Deus ha de trazer a juizo toda a obra, e até tudo o que está encoberto, quer seja bom quer seja mau.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.
