1 Vendo pois Athalia, mãe de Achazias, que seu filho era morto, levantou-se, e destruiu toda a semente real.
Now when Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and killed all the royal children.
2 Mas Josebath, filha do rei Jorão, irmã de Achazias, tomou a Joás, filho de Achazias, e o furtou d'entre os filhos do rei, aos quaes matavam, e o poz, a elle e á sua ama na recamara, e o escondeu d'Athalia, e assim não o mataram.
But Jehosheba, a daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah, and hid him away from among the king's sons who were killed, along with his nurse; she put them into a bedroom. They hid him from Athaliah so that he was not killed.
3 E esteve com ella escondido na casa do Senhor seis annos: e Athalia reinava sobre a terra.
He remained with her six years, hidden in the house of Yahweh, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
4 E no setimo anno enviou Joiada, e tomou os centuriões, com os capitães, e com os da guarda, e os metteu comsigo na casa do Senhor: e fez com elles um concerto e os ajuramentou na casa do Senhor, e lhes mostrou o filho do rei.
In the seventh year, Jehoiada sent messages and brought the commanders of hundreds of the Carites and of the guard, and brought them to himself, into the temple of Yahweh. He made a covenant with them, and he made them swear an oath in the house of Yahweh. Then he showed them the king's son.
5 E deu-lhes ordem, dizendo: Esta é a obra que vós haveis de fazer: uma terça parte de vós, que entra no sabbado, fará a guarda da casa do rei:
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you must do. A third of you who come on the Sabbath will keep watch over the king's house,
6 E outra terça parte estará á porta Sur; e a outra terça parte á porta detraz dos da guarda: assim fareis a guarda d'esta casa, affastando a todos.
and a third will be at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guardhouse.”
7 E as duas partes de vós, a saber, todos os que saem no sabbado, farão a guarda da casa do Senhor junto ao rei.
The two other groups who are not serving on the Sabbath, you must keep the watch over the house of Yahweh for the king.
8 E rodeareis o rei, cada um com as suas armas nas mãos, e aquelle que entrar entre as fileiras o matarão; e vós estareis com o rei quando sair e quando entrar.
You must surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. Whoever enters within your ranks, let him be killed. You must stay with the king when he goes out, and when he comes in.
9 Fizeram pois os centuriões conforme tudo quanto ordenara o sacerdote Joiada, tomando cada um os seus homens, tanto aos que entravam no sabbado como aos que sahiam no sabbado; e vieram ao sacerdote Joiada.
So the commanders of hundreds obeyed everything Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each one took his men, those who were to come in to serve on the Sabbath, and those who were to stop serving on that Sabbath; and they came to Jehoiada the priest.
10 E o sacerdote deu aos centuriões as lanças, e os escudos que haviam sido do rei David, que estavam na casa do Senhor.
Then Jehoiada the priest gave the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields that belonged to King David and that were in the house of Yahweh.
11 E os da guarda se pozeram, cada um com as armas na mão, desde o lado direito da casa até ao lado esquerdo da casa, da banda do altar, e da banda da casa, junto ao rei em redor.
So the guards stood, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side, near the altar and the temple, surrounding the king.
12 Então elle tirou o filho do rei, e lhe poz a corôa, e lhe deu o testemunho; e o fizeram rei, e o ungiram, e bateram as mãos, e disseram: Viva o rei!
Then Jehoiada brought out the king's son Joash, put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant decrees. Then they made him king and anointed him. They clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”
13 E Athalia, ouvindo a voz dos da guarda e do povo, entrou ao povo na casa do Senhor.
When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people in the house of Yahweh.
14 E olhou, e eis que o rei estava junto á columna, conforme o costume, e os capitães e as trombetas junto ao rei, e todo o povo da terra estava alegre e tocava as trombetas: então Athalia rasgou os seus vestidos, e clamou: Traição! Traição!
She looked, and, behold, the king was standing by the pillar, as the custom was, and the captains and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”
15 Porém o sacerdote Joiada deu ordem aos centuriões que commandavam as tropas, e disse-lhes: Tirae-a para fóra das fileiras, e a quem a seguir matae-o á espada. Porque o sacerdote disse: Não a matem na casa do Senhor.
Then Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds who were over the army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks. Anyone who follows her, kill him with the sword.” For the priest had said, “Do not let her be killed in the house of Yahweh.”
16 E lançaram-lhe as mãos a ella, e foi pelo caminho da entrada dos cavallos á casa do rei, e ali a mataram.
So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter the palace grounds, and there she was killed.
17 E Joiada fez um concerto entre o Senhor e o rei e o povo, que seria o povo do Senhor; como tambem entre o rei e o povo.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between Yahweh and the king and people, that they should be Yahweh's people, and also between the king and the people.
18 Então todo o povo da terra entrou na casa de Baal, e a derribaram, como tambem os seus altares, e as suas imagens totalmente quebraram, e a Mattan, sacerdote de Baal, mataram perante os altares: então o sacerdote poz officiaes sobre a casa do Senhor.
So all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down. They smashed Baal's altars and his idol figures to pieces, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of those altars. Then Jehoida the priest appointed guards over the temple of Yahweh.
19 E tomou os centuriões, e os capitães, e os da guarda, e todo o povo da terra: e conduziram da casa do Senhor o rei, e vieram, pelo caminho da porta dos da guarda, á casa do rei, e se assentou no throno dos reis.
Jehoida took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guard, and all the people of the land, and together they brought down the king from the house of Yahweh and they went into the king's house, entering by way of the gate of the guards. Joash took his place on the royal throne.
20 E todo o povo da terra se alegrou, e a cidade repousou, depois que mataram a Athalia á espada junto á casa do rei.
So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been killed with the sword at the king's house.
21 Era Joás da edade de sete annos quando o fizeram rei.
Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.
