1 To również są przysłowia Salomona, które przepisali mężowie Ezechiasza, króla Judy.
These [are] also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2 Chwałą Boga jest sprawę taić, ale chwałą królów – dociekać sprawy.
[It is] the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings [is] to search out a matter.
3 Wysokość niebios i głębia ziemi, i serca królów są niezbadane.
The heaven for hight, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings [is] unsearchable.
4 Usuń żużel ze srebra, a wyjdzie naczynie dla złotnika.
Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
5 Usuń niegodziwego sprzed króla, a jego tron umocni się w sprawiedliwości.
Take away the wicked [from] before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6 Nie wywyższaj się przed królem i nie stawaj na miejscu wielkich;
Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great [men]:
7 Bo lepiej, żeby ci powiedziano: Podejdź tu, niż żeby cię poniżono przed księciem, którego twoje oczy widziały.
For better [it is] that it be said to thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thy eyes have seen.
8 Nie spiesz się do kłótni, bo na końcu [nie będziesz wiedział], co zrobić, gdy cię zawstydzi twój bliźni.
Go not forth hastily to strive, lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.
9 Załatw sprawę ze swoim bliźnim i nie zdradzaj tajemnicy drugiemu;
Debate thy cause with thy neighbor [himself]; and reveal not a secret to another:
10 By ten, który słucha, nie zawstydził cię, a twoja niesława nie przylgnęła do ciebie.
Lest he that heareth [it] put thee to shame, and thy infamy turn not away.
11 Odpowiednio wypowiedziane słowo [jest jak] złote jabłko w srebrnych rzeźbach.
A word fitly spoken [is like] apples of gold in pictures of silver.
12 Jak złoty kolczyk i klejnot ze szczerego złota tak jest dla uszu posłusznego ten, który mądrze strofuje.
[As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [so is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13 Czym chłód śniegu w czasie żniwa, [tym] wierny posłaniec dla tych, którzy go posyłają, bo pokrzepia dusze swych panów.
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [so is] a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
14 Człowiek, który się chlubi zmyślonym darem, jest jak chmury i wiatr bez deszczu.
Whoever boasteth himself of a false gift [is like] clouds and wind without rain.
15 Cierpliwością można przekonać władcę, a łagodny język łamie kości.
By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
16 Czy znalazłeś miód? Zjedz tyle, ile trzeba, byś objadłszy się, nie zwrócił go.
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled with it, and vomit it.
17 Oddal nogę od domu bliźniego, by nie miał cię dość i cię nie znienawidził.
Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbor's house; lest he be weary of thee, and [so] hate thee.
18 Kto mówi fałszywe świadectwo przeciw swemu bliźniemu, [jest] młotem i mieczem, i ostrą strzałą.
A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor [is] a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19 Ufność w człowieka niewiernego w dniu ucisku jest [jak] złamany ząb i zwichnięta noga.
Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble [is like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20 [Jak] ten, kto zabiera odzienie w czasie zimy i jak ocet na saletrze taki [jest ten], kto śpiewa pieśni smutnemu sercu.
[As] he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon nitre; so [is] he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
21 Jeśli twój nieprzyjaciel jest głodny, nakarm go chlebem, a jeśli jest spragniony, napój go wodą;
If thy enemy shall hunger, give him bread to eat; and if he shall thirst, give him water to drink:
22 Bo zgarniesz rozżarzone węgle na jego głowę, a PAN cię nagrodzi.
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD will reward thee.
23 [Jak] północny wiatr przepędza deszcz, tak gniewna twarz [przepędza] plotkarski język.
The north wind driveth away rain: so [doth] an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
24 Lepiej mieszkać w kącie pod dachem niż z kłótliwą żoną w przestronnym domu.
[It is] better to dwell in a corner of the house-top, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
25 [Jak] zimna woda dla pragnącej duszy, [tak] dobra wieść z dalekiej ziemi.
[As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, so [is] good news from a far country.
26 [Jak] zmącone źródło i zepsuty zdrój, [tak] sprawiedliwy, który upada przed niegodziwym.
A righteous man falling down before the wicked [is as] a turbid fountain, and a corrupt spring.
27 Niedobrze jest jeść za dużo miodu, a szukanie własnej chwały nie jest chwałą.
[It is] not good to eat much honey: so [for men] to search their own glory [is not] glory.
28 Człowiek, który nie panuje nad swoim duchem, jest [jak] miasto zburzone [i] bez muru.
He that [hath] no rule over his own spirit [is like] a city [that is] broken down, [and] without walls.
