1 Potem PAN odpowiedział Hiobowi spośród wichru:
Then spake Jehovah to Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
2 Kim jest ten, co zaciemnia radę słowami bez poznania?
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Przepasz teraz swe biodra jak mężczyzna, będę cię pytał, a ty mi odpowiadaj.
Gird up thy loins like a man! I will ask thee, and answer thou me!
4 Gdzie byłeś, kiedy zakładałem fundamenty ziemi? Powiedz, jeśli masz [tę] wiedzę.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding!
5 Kto określił jej rozmiary? Czy wiesz? Kto rozciągnął nad nią sznur?
Who fixed its dimensions, that thou shouldst know it! Or who stretched out the line upon it?
6 Na czym są oparte jej podstawy? Kto położył jej kamień węgielny;
Upon what were its foundations fixed? And who laid its corner-stone,
7 Gdy gwiazdy poranne razem śpiewały i radowali się wszyscy synowie Boży?
When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Kto zamknął bramą morze, gdy się wyrywało [jakby] wychodzące z łona?
And who shut up the sea with doors, When it burst forth as from the womb?
9 Gdy chmurę uczyniłem jego szatą, a ciemność jego pieluszkami;
When I made the clouds its mantle, And thick darkness its swaddling-band;
10 Gdy ustanowiłem o nim swój dekret i poustawiałem rygle i bramy;
When I appointed for it my bound, And fixed for it bars and doors;
11 I powiedziałem: Dotąd dojdziesz, a nie dalej; tu położysz swe nadęte fale.
And said, Thus far shalt thou come, and no farther, And here shall thy proud waves be stayed!
12 Czy kiedykolwiek w swoim życiu rozkazywałeś rankowi i wskazałeś zorzy jej miejsce;
Hast thou, in thy life, given charge to the morning, Or caused the day-spring to know its place,
13 Aby ogarnęła krańce ziemi i aby niegodziwi zostali z niej strząśnięci?
That it should lay hold of the ends of the earth, And shake the wicked out of it?
14 Ona zmienia się jak glina pod pieczęcią, [a wszystko] stoi jak szata.
It is changed as clay by the seal; And all things stand forth as in rich apparel.
15 Niegodziwym jest odebrana ich światłość, a wyniosłe ramię będzie złamane.
But from the wicked their light is withheld, And the high-raised arm is broken.
16 Czy dotarłeś aż do źródeł morza? Czy przechadzałeś się po dnie głębin?
Hast thou visited the springs of the sea, And walked through the recesses of the deep?
17 Czy bramy śmierci zostały przed tobą odkryte? Czy widziałeś bramy cienia śmierci?
Have the gates of death been disclosed to thee, And hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18 Czy pojąłeś szerokość ziemi? Powiedz mi, jeśli to wszystko wiesz.
Hast thou surveyed the breadth of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all!
19 Gdzie jest droga do miejsca przebywania światłości? Gdzie swoje miejsce [ma] ciemność;
Where is the way to the abode of light? And darkness—where is its dwelling-place?
20 Abyś ją zaprowadził do jej granic i mógł poznać ścieżki do jej domu?
That thou shouldst lead it to its boundary, And that thou shouldst know the paths to its mansion!
21 Czy wiesz to, bo wtedy się urodziłeś i liczba twoich dni [jest] wielka?
Surely thou knowest; for thou wast then born! And the number of thy years is great!
22 Czy dotarłeś do skarbnic śniegu? Czy widziałeś skarbnice gradu;
Hast thou visited the storehouses of the snow, Or seen the treasuries of the hail,
23 Który zachowuję na czas ucisku, na dzień bitwy i wojny?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, —Against the day of battle and war?
24 Jaką drogą dzieli się światłość, która rozpędza wiatr wschodni po ziemi?
What is the way to where light is distributed, And the east wind spread abroad upon the earth?
25 Kto podzielił kanał dla ulewy i drogę dla błyskawicy grzmotu;
Who hath prepared channels for the rain, And a path for the thunder-flash,
26 Aby padał deszcz na ziemię, w której nikt nie mieszka, i na pustynię, gdzie nie ma człowieka;
To give rain to the land without an inhabitant, To the wilderness wherein is no man;
27 Aby nasycił [miejsce] puste i jałowe oraz zasilił rosnącą [tam] trawę?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, And cause the tender herb to spring forth?
28 Czy deszcz ma ojca? A kto spłodził krople rosy?
Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 Z czyjego łona wychodzi lód? A kto spłodził szron niebieski?
Out of whose womb came the ice? And who hath gendered the hoar-frost of heaven?
30 Wody zostają przykryte niczym kamieniem, gdy powierzchnia głębiny zamarza.
The waters are hid as under stone, And the face of the deep becometh solid.
31 Czy możesz związać jasne gwiazdy Plejad albo rozluźnić więzy Oriona?
Canst thou fasten the bands of the Pleiades, Or loosen the chains of Orion?
32 Czy wyprowadzisz w swym czasie gwiazdy południowe? Czy poprowadzisz Niedźwiedzicę z jej synami?
Canst thou lead forth the Signs in their season, Or guide the Bear with her sons?
33 Czy znasz porządek nieba? Czy możesz ustanowić jego panowanie na ziemi?
Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Hast thou appointed their dominion over the earth?
34 Czy podniesiesz swój głos ku chmurom, aby cię ulewa przykryła?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, So that abundance of waters will cover thee?
35 Czy możesz wypuścić błyskawice, aby przyszły i mówiły: Oto jesteśmy?
Canst thou send forth lightnings, so that they will go, And say to thee, “Here we are”?
36 Kto włożył we wnętrze [ludzkie] mądrość? Kto dał sercu rozum?
Who hath put understanding in the reins, And given intelligence to the mind?
37 Kto zdoła policzyć chmury [swoją] mądrością? Kto uspokoi, kiedy leje z nieba;
Who numbereth the clouds in wisdom? And who poureth out the bottles of heaven,
38 Gdy proch twardnieje, a bryły przylegają do siebie?
When the dust floweth into a molten mass, And the clods cleave fast together?
39 Czy lwu zdobyczy nałowisz, czy zaspokoisz głód lwiątek;
Canst thou hunt prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the hunger of the young lions,
40 Gdy tulą się w swoich jaskiniach i czyhają w cieniu swoich jam?
When they couch in their dens, And lie in wait in the thicket?
41 Kto dostarcza krukowi pokarmu, gdy jego młode wołają do Boga [i] tułają się bez pożywienia?
Who provideth for the raven his food, When his young ones cry unto God, While they wander about without food?
