Hioba 2
1 I [znowu pewnego] dnia, gdy synowie Boży przybyli, aby stanąć przed PANEM, wśród nich przyszedł też szatan, aby stanąć przed PANEM.
And it came to pass on a certain day, that the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came among them to stand before the Lord.
2 Wtedy PAN powiedział do szatana: Skąd przychodzisz? Szatan odpowiedział PANU: Krążyłem po ziemi i przechadzałem się po niej.
And the Lord, said to the devil, Whence come you? Then the devil said before the Lord, I am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth.
3 PAN zapytał szatana: Czy zauważyłeś mojego sługę Hioba – że nie ma nikogo mu równego na ziemi? [To] człowiek doskonały i prawy, bojący się Boga i stroniący od zła. On jeszcze trwa w swojej prawości, choć ty mnie pobudziłeś przeciw niemu, abym go niszczył bez powodu.
And the Lord said to the devil, Hast you then observed my servant Job, that there is none of [men] upon the earth like him, a harmless, true, blameless, godly man, abstaining from all evil? and he yet cleaves to innocence, whereas you has told [me] to destroy his substance without cause?
4 Szatan odpowiedział PANU: Skórę za skórę; wszystko, co człowiek ma, odda za swoje życie;
And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, all that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life.
5 Ale wyciągnij tylko swoją rękę i dotknij jego kości i ciała, a [na pewno] będzie ci w twarz złorzeczył.
Nay, but put forth your hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: verily he will bless you to [your] face.
6 Wtedy PAN powiedział do szatana: Oto jest w twojej ręce, ale jego życie zachowaj.
And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to you; only save his life.
7 Wyszedł więc szatan sprzed oblicza PANA i dotknął Hioba bolesnymi wrzodami, od stóp aż po czubek głowy.
So the devil went out from the Lord, and struck Job with sore boils from [his] feet to [his] head.
8 A [ten] wziął skorupę, aby się nią skrobać, i siedział w popiele.
And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung-heap outside the city.
9 Jego żona powiedziała mu: Jeszcze trwasz w swojej prawości? Złorzecz Bogu i umieraj.
Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
10 I odpowiedział jej: Mówisz, tak jak mówią głupie kobiety. Czy [tylko] dobro będziemy przyjmować od Boga, a zła przyjmować nie będziemy? W tym wszystkim Hiob nie zgrzeszył swymi ustami.
But he looked on her, and said to her, You have spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God.
11 A gdy trzej przyjaciele Hioba usłyszeli o całym nieszczęściu, które spadło na niego, przyszli, każdy ze swego miejsca: Elifaz z Temanu, Bildad z Szuach i Sofar z Naamy. Umówili się bowiem, aby przyjść i wraz z nim lamentować, i pocieszyć go.
Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Thaemans, Baldad sovereign of the Saucheans, Sophar king of he Minaeans: and they came to him with one accord, to comfort and to visit him.
12 A gdy z daleka podnieśli swoje oczy, nie poznali go. Podnieśli swój głos i płakali, a potem każdy z nich rozdarł swój płaszcz i rzucał proch w górę na swoją głowę;
And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and tore every one his garment, and sprinkled dust upon [their heads],
13 I siedzieli z nim na ziemi przez siedem dni i siedem nocy i żaden z nich nie przemówił do niego ani słowem. Widzieli bowiem ogrom [jego] bólu.
and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and no one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful and very great.
