1 Wtedy Elifaz z Temanu odpowiedział:
Forsothe Eliphat Themanytes answeride, and seide,
2 Czy mądry [człowiek] ma odpowiadać próżną wiedzą i napełniać swoje wnętrze wiatrem wschodnim?
Whether a wise man schal answere, as spekynge ayens the wynd, and schal fille his stomac with brennyng, `that is, ire?
3 Czy ma się spierać słowami bezużytecznymi i mową, która nie przynosi pożytku?
For thou repreuest hym bi wordis, which is not lijk thee, and thou spekist that, that spedith not to thee.
4 Ty nawet odrzucasz bojaźń i powstrzymujesz modlitwę przed Bogiem.
As myche as is in thee, thou hast avoidid drede; and thou hast take awey preyeris bifor God.
5 Twoje usta bowiem pokazują twą nieprawość, posługujesz się mową przebiegłych.
For wickidnesse hath tauyt thi mouth, and thou suest the tunge of blasfemeris.
6 Twoje usta cię potępiają, a nie ja; twoje wargi świadczą przeciwko tobie.
Thi tunge, and not Y, schal condempne thee, and thi lippis schulen answere thee.
7 Czy jesteś pierwszym człowiekiem, który się urodził? Czy zostałeś stworzony przed pagórkami?
Whether thou art borun the firste man, and art formed bifor alle little hillis?
8 Czy słuchałeś tajemnic Boga? Czy tylko w tobie jest mądrość?
Whether thou herdist the counsel of God, and his wisdom is lower than thou?
9 Cóż ty wiesz, czego my nie wiemy? Cóż ty rozumiesz, czego my nie rozumiemy?
What thing knowist thou, whiche we knowen not? What thing vndurstondist thou, whiche we witen not?
10 Wśród nas są i sędziwi, i starcy, starsi od twego ojca.
Bothe wise men and elde, myche eldre than thi fadris, ben among vs.
11 Czy lekceważysz pociechę Boga? Czy masz w sobie coś tajemnego?
Whether it is greet, that God coumforte thee? But thi schrewid wordis forbeden this.
12 Czemu cię tak uniosło twoje serce? Czemu swoimi oczami tak mrugasz;
What reisith thin herte thee, and thou as thenkynge grete thingis hast iyen astonyed?
13 Że zwracasz przeciwko Bogu swego ducha i wypuszczasz ze swoich ust takie słowa?
What bolneth thi spirit ayens God, that thou brynge forth of thi mouth siche wordis?
14 Czym jest człowiek, aby miał być czysty, urodzony z kobiety, aby miał być sprawiedliwy?
What is a man, that he be with out wem, and that he borun of a womman appere iust?
15 Oto nawet swoim świętym on nie ufa i niebiosa nie są czyste w jego oczach.
Lo! noon among hise seyntis is vnchaungable, and heuenes ben not cleene in his siyt.
16 Tym bardziej obrzydły i nikczemny jest człowiek, [który] pije nieprawość jak wodę.
How myche more a man abhomynable and vnprofitable, that drynkith wickidnesse as water?
17 Wykażę ci, [tylko] mnie posłuchaj; opowiem ci, co widziałem;
I schal schewe to thee, here thou me; Y schal telle to thee that, that Y siy.
18 Co mądrzy powiedzieli, a nie zataili, [co mieli] od przodków swoich;
Wise men knoulechen, and hiden not her fadris.
19 Im samym dana była ziemia i żaden obcy nie przeszedł wśród nich.
To whiche aloone the erthe is youun, and an alien schal not passe bi hem.
20 Niegodziwy żyje w udręce przez wszystkie [swoje] dni i niewiele lat wyznaczono ciemięzcy.
A wickid man is proud in alle hise daies; and the noumbre of hise yeeris and of his tirauntrie is vncerteyn.
21 Głos przerażenia [brzmi] w jego uszach, że w czasie pokoju napadnie go niszczyciel.

22 Nie wierzy, że miałby wrócić z ciemności, obawia się [zewsząd] miecza.
He bileueth not that he may turne ayen fro derknessis to liyt; and biholdith aboute on ech side a swerd.
23 Tuła się za chlebem, [pytając], gdzie [go znaleźć]. Wie, że dzień ciemności został dla niego przygotowany.
Whanne he stirith hym to seke breed, he woot, that the dai of derknessis is maad redi in his hond.
24 Przeraża go utrapienie i ucisk; wzmocnią się przeciwko niemu jak król gotowy do boju.
Tribulacioun schal make hym aferd, and angwisch schal cumpas hym, as a kyng which is maad redi to batel.
25 Wyciągnął bowiem swą rękę przeciw Bogu, przeciwko Wszechmocnemu się umocnił.
For he helde forth his hond ayens God, and he was maad strong ayens Almyyti God.
26 Naciera na niego, na [jego] szyję, [która jest okryta] pod gęstymi grzbietami jego tarcz.
He ran with neck reisid ayens God, and he was armed with fat nol.
27 Swoją twarz kryje bowiem w tłuszczu, a jego tusza zaokrągliła się na lędźwiach.
Fatnesse, that is, pride `comyng forth of temporal aboundaunce, hilide his face, `that is, the knowyng of vndurstondyng, and outward fatnesse hangith doun of his sidis.
28 Mieszka w opustoszałych miastach i domach, w których nikt nie przebywa, które niebawem staną się ruiną.
He schal dwelle in desolat citees, and in deseert, `ethir forsakun, housis, that ben turned in to biriels.
29 Nie wzbogaci się i nie przetrwa jego majątek ani jego doskonałość nie rozszerzy się na ziemi.
He schal not be maad riche, nether his catel schal dwelle stidefastli; nether he schal sende his roote in the erthe,
30 Nie wyjdzie z ciemności, płomień ususzy jego latorośle, a zginie od tchnienia jego ust.
nether he schal go awei fro derknessis. Flawme schal make drie hise braunchis, and he schal be takun a wey bi the spirit of his mouth.
31 Niech złudzony nie ufa marności, gdyż marność będzie jego zapłatą.

32 Przed wypełnieniem jego dni nastąpi, a jego gałązka nie zakwitnie.

33 Jak winna latorośl utraci swoje niedojrzałe grona, jak oliwka zrzuci swój kwiat.

34 Zgromadzenie obłudników będzie bowiem spustoszone, a ogień strawi namioty przekupstwa.

35 Poczęli krzywdę i urodzili nieprawość, a ich łono przygotowuje oszustwo.
