1 Jakub też poszedł swoją drogą i spotkali go aniołowie Boga.
But Iacob went forth on his iourney. And the angells of God came and mett him.
2 Gdy Jakub ich ujrzał, powiedział: To obóz Boga. I nadał temu miejscu nazwę Machanaim.
And when Iacob sawe them he sayde: this is godes hoost: and called the name of that same place Mahanaim.
3 Potem Jakub wysłał przed sobą posłańców do swego brata Ezawa, do ziemi Seir, do krainy Edomu.
Iacob sente meessengers before him to Esau his brother vnto the lande of Seir and the felde of Edom.
4 I rozkazał im: Tak powiecie do mego pana Ezawa: To mówi twój sługa Jakub: Byłem gościem u Labana i przebywałem z nim aż do tego czasu.
And he comaunded them saynge: se that ye speake after this maner to my lorde Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayth thus. I haue sogerned ad bene a straunger with Laban vnto this tyme:
5 Mam woły, osły i owce, służących i służące, a posyłam oznajmić to memu panu, żebym znalazł łaskę w twoich oczach.
and haue gotten oxen asses and shepe menservauntes and wemanseruauntes and haue sent to shewe it mi lorde that I may fynde grace in thy syghte.
6 Posłańcy wrócili do Jakuba i mówili: Przyszliśmy do twego brata Ezawa, a on też idzie naprzeciwko ciebie, a z nim czterystu mężów.
And the messengers came agayne to Iacob sainge: we came vnto thi brother Esau and he cometh ageynst the and. iiij. hundred men with hi.
7 Jakub bardzo się przestraszył i ogarnęła go trwoga. Podzielił więc lud, który z nim [był], oraz owce, woły i wielbłądy na dwa obozy.
Than was Iacob greatlye afrayde and wist not which waye to turne him selfe and devyded the people that was with him and the shepe oxen and camels in to. ij. companies
8 I powiedział: Jeśli Ezaw przyjdzie do jednego obozu i uderzy na niego, to drugi obóz ocaleje.
and sayde: Yf Esau come to the one parte and smyte it the other may saue it selfe.
9 Potem Jakub powiedział: Boże mego ojca Abrahama i Boże mego ojca Izaaka, PANIE, który do mnie powiedziałeś: Wróć do twojej ziemi i do twojej rodziny, a będę ci wyświadczał dobro.
And Iacob sayde: O god of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac: LORde which saydest vnto me returne vnto thy cuntre and to thy kynrede and I will deall wel with the.
10 Nie jestem godzien wszelkiego miłosierdzia i całej wierności, które okazałeś swemu słudze. Bo tylko o lasce przeszedłem ten Jordan, a teraz mam dwa obozy.
I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercyes and treuth which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunte. For with my staf came I over this Iordane and now haue Igoten. ij. droves
11 Wyrwij mnie, proszę, z ręki mego brata, z ręki Ezawa, bo się go boję, że przyjdzie i zabije mnie [i] matki z dziećmi.
Delyver me from the handes of my brother Esau for I feare him: lest he will come and smyte the mother with the childeru.
12 Ty bowiem powiedziałeś: Na pewno będę ci wyświadczał dobro i rozmnożę twoje potomstwo jak piasek morski, który nie może być zliczony z powodu jego mnóstwa.
Thou saydest that thou woldest surely do me good and woldest make mi seed as the sonde of the see which can not be nombred for multitude.
13 I przenocował tam tej nocy, i wziął z tego, co miał pod ręką, dar dla swego brata Ezawa;
And he taried there that same nyghte and toke of that which came to hande a preasent vnto Esau his brother:
14 Dwieście kóz i dwadzieścia kozłów, dwieście owiec i dwadzieścia baranów;
ij hundred she gootes ad xx he gootes: ij hundred shepe and xx rammes:
15 Trzydzieści karmiących wielbłądzic z młodymi, czterdzieści krów i dziesięć wołów, dwadzieścia oślic i dziesięcioro ośląt.
thyrtye mylch camels with their coltes: xl kyne ad x bulles: xx she asses ad foles
16 I oddał [je] w ręce swoich sług, każde stado oddzielnie, i powiedział do swoich sług: Idźcie przede mną i zachowajcie odstęp między stadami.
and delyuered them vnto his seruauntes euery drooue by them selues ad sayde vnto them: goo forth before me and put a space betwyxte euery drooue.
17 I rozkazał pierwszemu: Gdy spotka cię mój brat Ezaw, a spyta cię: Czyj jesteś? I dokąd idziesz? A czyje to [stado] przed tobą?
And he comaunded the formest sayngeWhe Esau my brother meteth the ad axeth the saynge: whose seruaute art thou and whither goost thou and whose ar these that goo before ye:
18 Wtedy odpowiesz: To jest dar od twego sługi Jakuba, posłany memu panu Ezawowi. A oto on sam [idzie] za nami.
thou shalt say they be thy seruaunte Iacobs and are a present sent vnto my lorde Esau and beholde he him selfe cometh after vs.
19 Tak też rozkazał drugiemu i trzeciemu, i wszystkim idącym za tymi stadami: Tymi słowy mówcie do Ezawa, gdy go spotkacie.
And so comaunded he the seconde ad euen so the thirde and lykewyse all that folowed the drooues sainge of this maner se that ye speake vnto Esau whe ye mete him
20 Powiecie [mu] też: Oto twój sługa Jakub [idzie] za nami. Myślał bowiem: Przebłagam go darem, który idzie przede mną, a potem zobaczę jego oblicze. Może mnie przyjmie łaskawie.
ad saye more ouer. Beholde thy seruaunte Iacob cometh after vs for he sayde. I will pease his wrath with the present yt goth before me and afterward I will see him myself so peradventure he will receaue me to grace.
21 I poszedł przed nim ten dar, a sam przenocował tej nocy ze [swoim] obozem.
So went the preset before him ad he taried all that nyghte in the tente
22 Wstał tej nocy, wziął obie swe żony i dwie swoje służebnice oraz jedenastu swoich synów i przeszedł przez bród Jabboku.
ad rose vp the same nyghte ad toke his. ij. wyves and his. ij. maydens and his. xi. sonnes and went ouer the foorde Iabok.
23 I wziął ich, przeprawił przez tę rzekę i przeprowadził [wszystko], co miał.
And he toke them ad sent the ouer the ryuer ad sent ouer that he had
24 Jakub zaś został sam. I walczył z nim [pewien] mężczyzna aż do wzejścia zorzy.
ad taried behinde him selfe alone. And there wrastled a man with him vnto the breakynge of the daye.
25 A widząc, że nie może go pokonać, dotknął go w staw biodrowy i wytrącił biodro Jakubowi ze stawu, gdy się z nim mocował.
And when he sawe that he coude not prevayle agaynst him he smote hi vnder the thye and the senowe of Iacobs thy shranke as he wrastled with him.
26 I powiedział: Puść mnie, bo już wzeszła zorza. Odpowiedział: Nie puszczę cię, aż mi pobłogosławisz.
And he sayde: let me goo for the daye breaketh. And he sayde: I will not lett the goo excepte thou blesse me.
27 Wtedy mu powiedział: Jakie jest twoje imię? I odpowiedział: Jakub.
And he sayde vnto him: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob.
28 I powiedział: Twoim imieniem nie będzie już Jakub, ale Izrael, bo mężnie zmagałeś się z Bogiem i z ludźmi i zwyciężyłeś.
And he sayde: thou shalt be called Iacob nomore but Israell. For thou hast wrastled with God and with men ad hast preuayled.
29 I Jakub spytał: Powiedz mi, proszę, twoje imię. A on odpowiedział: Czemu pytasz o moje imię? I tam mu błogosławił.
And Iacob asked him sainge tell me thi name. And he sayde wherfore dost thou aske after my name? and he blessed him there.
30 Jakub nadał więc temu miejscu nazwę Penuel, [mówiąc]: Widziałem bowiem Boga twarzą w twarz, a moja dusza została zachowana.
And Iacob called the name of the place Peniel for I haue sene God face to face and yet is my lyfe reserved.
31 I kiedy minął [miejsce] Penuel, wzeszło słońce, a on utykał z powodu swojego biodra.
And as he went ouer Peniel the sonne rose vpon him and he halted vpon his thye:
32 Dlatego do dziś synowie Izraela nie jadają ścięgna, które jest w stawie biodrowym, gdyż dotknął Jakuba w staw biodrowy, w ścięgno, które się skurczyło.
wherfore the childern of Israell eate not of the senow that shrancke vnder the thye vnto this daye: because that he smote Iacob vnder the thye in the senow that shroncke.
