Kaznodziei 1
1 Słowa Kaznodziei, syna Dawida, króla w Jerozolimie.
These are the words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 Marność nad marnościami – mówi Kaznodzieja – marność nad marnościami. Wszystko jest marnością.
“Futility of futilities,” says the Teacher, “futility of futilities! Everything is futile!”
3 Jaki pożytek ma człowiek z całego swego trudu, który podejmuje pod słońcem?
What does a man gain from all his labor, at which he toils under the sun?
4 Jedno pokolenie przemija, [drugie] pokolenie przychodzi, lecz ziemia trwa na wieki.
Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
5 Słońce wschodzi i słońce zachodzi, i spieszy do swego miejsca, z którego znów wschodzi.
The sun rises and the sun sets; it hurries back to where it rises.
6 Wiatr idzie na południe i zawraca na północ, krąży nieustannie i znowu wraca na drogę swego krążenia.
The wind blows southward, then turns northward; round and round it swirls, ever returning on its course.
7 Wszystkie rzeki płyną do morza, lecz morze się nie przepełnia; do miejsca, z którego rzeki płyną, [znowu] wracają.
All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full; to the place from which the streams come, there again they flow.
8 Wszystkie rzeczy [są] pełne trudu, a człowiek nie zdoła tego wyrazić. Oko nie nasyci się patrzeniem ani ucho nie napełni się słuchaniem.
All things are wearisome, more than one can describe; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing.
9 To, co było, jest tym, co będzie; a to, co się stało, jest tym, co się stanie. I nie ma nic nowego pod słońcem.
What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Czy jest coś, o czym można by powiedzieć: Patrz, to jest coś nowego? I to już było w dawnych czasach, które były przed nami.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
11 Nie ma pamięci o dawnych rzeczach; także o tych, które będą, nie będzie pamięci u tych, którzy potem nastaną.
There is no remembrance of those who came before, and those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow after.
12 Ja, Kaznodzieja, byłem królem nad Izraelem w Jerozolimie.
I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 I przyłożyłem się w swoim sercu [do tego], aby mądrością szukać wszystkiego i wybadać wszystko, co się dzieje pod niebem. To uciążliwe zadanie Bóg dał synom ludzkim, aby się nim trudzili.
And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
14 Widziałem wszystkie sprawy, jakie się dzieją pod słońcem, a oto wszystko jest marnością i utrapieniem ducha.
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.
15 Tego, co krzywe, nie da się wyprostować, a tego, czego brak, nie da się policzyć.
What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted.
16 Tak więc pomyślałem w swoim sercu: Oto wzbogaciłem się i dano mi więcej mądrości niż wszystkim, którzy byli przede mną w Jerozolimie. I moje serce doświadczyło wielkiej mądrości i wiedzy.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
17 I przyłożyłem się w swoim sercu [do tego], aby poznać mądrość, a także by poznać szaleństwo i głupotę. [Ale] poznałem, że i to jest utrapieniem ducha.
So I set my mind to know wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a pursuit of the wind.
18 Gdzie bowiem jest wiele mądrości, [tam] jest wiele smutku. A kto przysparza wiedzy, przysparza i cierpienia.
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow, and as knowledge grows, grief increases.
