Kaznodziei 4
1 Potem zwróciłem się w stronę wszystkich ucisków, jakie zdarzają się pod słońcem, i przyjrzałem się im. I oto [widziałem] łzy uciśnionych, a nie mieli pocieszyciela. Siła była w rękach ciemięzców, a tamci nie mieli pocieszyciela.
Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there was no comforter.
2 Dlatego chwaliłem umarłych, którzy już odeszli, bardziej niż żywych, którzy jeszcze żyją.
So I admired the dead, who had already died, above the living, who are still alive.
3 Nawet lepszy od nich obu jest ten, którego jeszcze nie było i który nie widział zła, jakie się dzieje pod słońcem.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
4 Zobaczyłem też, że wszelka praca i każde dobre dzieło wywołują tylko zazdrość jednego wobec drugiego. Także i to jest marnością i utrapieniem ducha.
I saw that all labor and success spring from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
5 Głupi składa swoje ręce i zjada własne ciało.
The fool folds his hands and consumes his own flesh.
6 Lepsza jest pełna garść z pokojem niż obie pełne garści z trudem i utrapieniem ducha.
Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and pursuit of the wind.
7 Znowu obróciłem się i zobaczyłem [kolejną] marność pod słońcem.
Again, I saw futility under the sun.
8 Jest to człowiek samotny, bez towarzysza, nie ma ani syna, ani brata i nie ma końca wszelki jego trud, a jego oczy nie mogą nasycić się bogactwem. [Nie myśli]: Dla kogo ja pracuję i odmawiam dobra swojej duszy? Także i to jest marnością i ciężką udręką.
There is a man all alone, without even a son or brother. And though there is no end to his labor, his eyes are still not content with his wealth: “For whom do I toil and bereave my soul of enjoyment?” This too is futile—a miserable task.
9 Lepiej jest dwom niż jednemu, gdyż mają dobry pożytek ze swojej pracy.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.
10 Jeśli bowiem jeden upadnie, drugi podniesie swego towarzysza. Lecz biada samotnemu, gdy upadnie, bo nie ma drugiego, który by go podniósł.
For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!
11 Także jeśli dwoje [ludzi] śpi [razem], grzeją się wzajemnie. Ale jeden jakże się ogrzeje?
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?
12 A jeśli [kto] przemaga jednego, to dwaj stawią mu czoła, a potrójny sznur nie rozerwie się tak łatwo.
And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
13 Lepszy jest chłopiec ubogi i mądry niż król stary i głupi, który nie potrafi już przyjmować napomnienia.
Better is a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take a warning.
14 Bo [tamten] wychodzi z więzienia, aby królować, a ten urodzony w swoim królestwie zubożeje.
For the youth has come from the prison to the kingship, though he was born poor in his own kingdom.
15 Widziałem, jak wszyscy żyjący, którzy chodzą pod słońcem, przestawali z chłopcem, potomkiem, który miał wstąpić na miejsce tamtego.
I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed this second one, the youth who succeeded the king.
16 Niezliczony jest cały lud, jaki żył przed nimi. Lecz następni nie będą się z niego cieszyć. A tak i to jest marność i utrapienie ducha.
There is no limit to all the people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
