1 A roku piętnastego panowania Tyberyjusza Cesarza, gdy Poncki Piłat był starostą Judzkim, a Herod Tetrarchą Galilejskim, a Filip, brat jego, Tetrarchą Iturejskim i krainy Trachonickiej, a Lizanijasz Tetrarchą Abileńskim,
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being Governor of Judaea, Herod Tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip Tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias Tetrarch of Abilene,
2 Za najwyższych kapłanów Annasza i Kaifasza, stało się słowo Boże do Jana, Zacharyjaszowego syna, na puszczy.
during the High-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, a message from God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the Desert.
3 I przyszedł do wszystkiej krainy leżącej około Jordanu, każąc chrzest pokuty na odpuszczenie grzechów.
John went into all the district about the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of the penitent for the forgiveness of sins;
4 Jako napisano w księgach proroctw Izajasza proroka, mówiącego: Głos wołającego na puszczy; gotujcie drogę Pańską, proste czyńcie ścieżki jego.
as it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying aloud! 'In the Desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight.
5 Każdy padół będzie wypełniony, a każda góra i pagórek będzie zniżony, i miejsca krzywe wyprostują się, a ostre drogi będą gładkiemi;
Every ravine shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill levelled down, the crooked places shall be turned into straight roads, and the rugged ways into smooth;
6 I ogląda wszelkie ciało zbawienie Boże.
and then shall all mankind see God's salvation.'"
7 Mówił tedy ludowi, który wychodził, aby był ochrzczony od niego: Rodzaju jaszczurczy! któż wam pokazał, żebyście uciekali przed przyszłym gniewem?
Accordingly John used to say to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "O vipers' brood, who has warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Przynoścież tedy owoce godne pokuty, a nie poczynajcie mówić sami w sobie: Ojca mamy Abrahama; albowiem powiadam wam, że Bóg może i z tych kamieni wzbudzić dzieci Abrahamowi.
Live lives which shall prove your change of heart; and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones.
9 A już siekiera do korzenia drzew przyłożona jest; przetoż każde drzewo, które nie przynosi owocu dobrego, bywa wycięte i w ogień wrzucone.
And even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which fails to yield good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire."
10 I pytał go lud mówiąc: Cóż tedy czynić będziemy?
The crowds repeatedly asked him, "What then are we to do?"
11 A on odpowiadając rzekł im: Kto ma dwie suknie, niechaj udzieli temu, co nie ma; a kto ma pokarm niech także uczyni.
"Let the man who has two coats," he answered, "give one to the man who has none; and let the man who has food share it with others."
12 Przyszli też i celnicy, aby byli chrzczeni, i rzekli do niego: Nauczycielu! a my cóż czynić będziemy?
There came also a party of tax-gatherers to be baptized, and they asked him, "Rabbi, what are we to do?"
13 A on rzekł do nich: Nic więcej nie wyciągajcie nad to, co wam postanowiono.
"Do not exact more than the legal amount," he replied.
14 Pytali go też i żołnierze, mówiąc: A my cóż czynić będziemy? I rzekł do nich: Nikomu gwałtu nie czyńcie, i nikogo nie potwarzajcie, a przestawajcie na żołdzie waszym.
The soldiers also once and again inquired of him, "And we, what are we to do?" His answer was, "Neither intimidate any one nor lay false charges; and be content with your pay."
15 A gdy lud oczekiwał, i myślili wszyscy w sercach swych o Janie, jeśliby snać on nie był Chrystusem,
And while the people were in suspense and all were debating in their minds whether John might possibly be the Anointed One,
16 Odpowiedział Jan wszystkim, mówiąc: Jać was chrzczę wodą; lecz idzie mocniejszy nad mię, któremum nie jest godzien rozwiązać rzemyka u butów jego; ten was chrzcić będzie Duchem Świętym i ogniem.
he answered the question by saying to them all, "As for me, I am baptizing you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose very sandal-strap I am not worthy to unfasten: He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and with fire.
17 Którego łopata jest w ręku jego, a wyczyści bojewisko swoje, i zgromadzi pszenicę do gumna swego, ale plewy spali ogniem nieugaszonym.
His winnowing-shovel is in His hand to clear out His threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into His storehouse; but the chaff He will burn up in fire unquenchable."
18 A tak wiele i innych rzeczy napominając, odpowiadał ludowi.
With many exhortations besides these he declared the Good News to the people.
19 A Herod Tetrarcha, będąc strofowany od niego dla Herodyjady, żony Filipa, brata jego, i dla wszystkich złych spraw, które czynił Herod.
But Herod the Tetrarch, being repeatedly rebuked by him about Herodias his brother's wife, and about all the wicked deeds that he had done,
20 Przydał i to nade wszystko, iż wsadził Jana do więzienia.
now added this to crown all the rest, that he threw John into prison.
21 I stało się, gdy był ochrzczony wszystek lud, i gdy Jezus był ochrzczony, i modlił się, że się niebo otworzyło;
Now when all the people had been baptized, and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the sky opened,
22 I zstąpił nań Duch Święty w kształcie cielesnym jako gołębica, i stał się głos z nieba, mówiąc: Tyś jest on Syn mój miły; w tobie mi się upodobało.
and the Holy Spirit came down in bodily shape, like a dove, upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven, which said, "Thou art My Son, dearly loved: in Thee is My delight."
23 A Jezus poczynał być jakoby w trzydziestu latach, będąc (jako mniemano, ) synem Józefa, syna Helego,
And He--Jesus--when He began His ministry, was about thirty years old. He was the son (it was supposed) of Joseph, son of Heli,

son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph,
