1 Skądże są walki i zwady między wami? Izali nie stąd, to jest z lubości waszych, które walczą w członkach waszych?
Whence is it, that there are among you fightings and broils? Is it not from the lusts, which war in your members?
2 Pożądacie, a nie macie, zajrzycie i zawidzicie, a nie możecie dostać; wadzicie się i walczycie, wszakże nie otrzymujecie, przeto iż nie prosicie.
Ye covet, and possess not; and ye kill, and envy, and effect nothing: and ye fight and make attacks; and ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Prosicie, a nie bierzecie, przeto iż źle prosicie, abyście to na rozkosze wasze obracali.
Ye ask, and receive not; because ye ask wickedly, that ye may pamper your lusts.
4 Cudzołożnicy i cudzołożnice! nie wiecież, iż przyjaźń świata jest nieprzyjaźnią Bożą? Przetoż, ktobykolwiek chciał być przyjacielem tego świata, staje się nieprzyjacielem Bożym.
Ye adulterers, know ye not, that the love of the world is hostility towards God? He therefore who chooseth to be a lover of this world, is the enemy of God.
5 Albo mniemacie, iż próżno Pismo mówi: Izali ku zazdrości pożąda duch, który w nas mieszka?
Or think ye, that the scripture hath vainly said: The spirit dwelling in us lusteth with envy?
6 Owszem, hojniejszą daje łaskę; bo mówi: Bóg się pysznym sprzeciwia, ale pokornym łaskę daje.
But our Lord hath given us more grace. Therefore he said: The Lord humbleth the lofty, and giveth grace to the lowly.
7 Poddajcież się tedy Bogu, a dajcie odpór dyjabłu, a uciecze od was.
Subject yourselves therefore to God; and stand firm against Satan, and he will flee from you.
8 Przybliżcie się ku Bogu, a przybliży się ku wam. Ochędóżcie ręce grzesznicy i oczyście serca, którzyście umysłu dwoistego,
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: sanctify your hearts, ye divided in mind.
9 Bądźcie utrapieni i żałujcie, i płaczcie; śmiech wasz niech się obróci w żałość, a radość w smutek.
Humble yourselves, and mourn: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into grief.
10 Uniżajcie się przed obliczem Pańskiem, a wywyższy was.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 Nie obmawiajcie jedni drugich, bracia! Kto obmawia brata i potępia brata swego, obmawia zakon i potępia zakon; a jeźli potępisz zakon, nie jesteś czynicielem zakonu, ale sędzią.
Speak not against each other, my brethren; for he that speaketh against his brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law. And if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but its judge.
12 Jeden jest zakonodawca, który może zbawić i zatracić. Ale ty ktoś jest, co potępiasz drugiego?
There is one Law-giver and Judge, who can make alive, and can destroy: but who art thou, that thou judgest thy neighbor?
13 Nuż teraz wy, co mówicie: Dziś albo jutro pójdziemy do tego miasta i zamieszkamy tam przez jeden rok, a będziemy kupczyć i zysk sobie przywiedziemy;
But what shall we say of those, who say: To-day or to-morrow we will go to such or such a city, and will abide there a year; and we will traffic, and get gain?
14 (Którzy nie wiecie, co jutro będzie; bo cóż jest żywot wasz? Para zaiste jest, która się na mały czas pokazuje, a potem niszczeje.)
And they know not what will be to-morrow: for what is our life, but an exhalation that is seen a little while, and then vanisheth and is gone?
15 Zamiast tego, co byście mieli mówić: Będzieli Pan chciał, a będziemyli żywi, uczynimy to albo owo.
Whereas they should say: If the Lord please, and we live, we will do this or that.
16 Ale teraz chlubicie się w pysze waszej; wszelka chluba takowa zła jest.
They glory in their vaunting. All such glorying is evil.
17 Przetoż, kto umie dobrze czynić, a nie czyni, grzech ma.
He that knoweth the good, and doeth it not, to him is sin.
