امثال 23

1 وقتی با حاکم سر سفره می‌نشینی، به خاطر بسپار با چه کسی روبرو هستی.

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2 اگر آدم پرخوری هستی، کارد بر گلویت بگذار

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou art a man given to appetite.

3 و شیفتهٔ غذاهای لذیذ او نشو، زیرا ممکن است فریبی در کار باشد.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful food.

4 عاقل باش و برای به چنگ آوردن ثروت، خودت را خسته نکن،

Labour not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.

5 زیرا ثروت ناپایدار است و مانند عقاب می‌پرد و ناپدید می‌شود.

Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6 از سفرهٔ آدم خسیس غذا نخور و برای غذاهای لذیذ او حریص نباش،

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his delicacies:

7 چون او حساب هر چه را که بخوری در فکرش نگه می‌دارد. او تعارف می‌کند و می‌گوید: «بخور و بنوش»، اما این را از ته دل نمی‌گوید.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8 لقمه‌ای را که خورده‌ای استفراغ خواهی کرد و تشکرات تو بر باد خواهد رفت.

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9 آدم نادان را نصیحت نکن، چون او سخنان حکیمانه تو را خوار خواهد شمرد.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10 حدود ملک خود را که از قدیم تعیین شده، تغییر نده و زمین یتیمان را غصب نکن،

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11 زیرا حامی ایشان قدرتمند است و به داد آنها خواهد رسید.

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12 وقتی دیگران تو را تأدیب می‌کنند، با تمام دل آن را بپذیر و به سخنان آموزنده‌شان گوش فرا ده.

Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.

13 از تأدیب کردن فرزند خویش کوتاهی نکن. چوب تنبیه او را نخواهد کشت.

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14 او را با چوب تنبیه کن که جانش را از هلاکت نجات خواهی داد. (Sheol h7585)

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Sheol h7585)

15 پسرم، اگر حکمت در دل تو باشد، دل من شاد خواهد شد

My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

16 و هنگامی که دهانت به راستی سخن بگوید، وجود من به وجد خواهد آمد.

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

17 به گناهکاران حسادت نورز، بلکه اشتیاق تو اطاعت از خداوند باشد؛

Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

18 زیرا در این صورت آیندهٔ خوبی خواهی داشت و امید تو بر باد نخواهد رفت.

For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

19 ای پسرم، عاقل باش و به سخنانم گوش فرا ده. در راه راست گام بردار

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.

20 و با آدمهای میگسار و شکم‌پرست معاشرت نکن،

Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

21 زیرا کسانی که کارشان فقط خوردن و خوابیدن است، فقیر و محتاج خواهند شد.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 نصیحت پدرت را که تو را به وجود آورده گوش بگیر و مادر پیرت را خوار مشمار.

Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23 در پی حقیقت باش و حکمت و ادب و فهم را کسب کن و به هیچ قیمت آنها را از دست نده.

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24 فرزندی درستکار و دانا باش تا مایهٔ شادی و خشنودی پدر و مادرت شوی.

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

25

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.

26 ای پسرم، به من گوش بده و از زندگی من سرمشق بگیر.

My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.

27 بدان که زن بدکاره دام خطرناکی است.

For an harlot is a deep ditch; and an adulteress is a narrow pit.

28 او مانند راهزن در کمین قربانیان خود می‌نشیند و باعث می‌شود مردان زیادی خیانتکار شوند.

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

29 مصیبت و بدبختی گریبانگیر چه کسی می‌شود؟ آن کیست که دائم نزاع به پا می‌کند و می‌نالد، بی‌جهت زخمی می‌شود و چشمانش تار می‌گردد؟

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30 کسی که دائم شراب می‌خورد و به دنبال میگساری می‌رود.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31 پس فریفتهٔ شراب قرمز نشو که در پیاله به تو چشمک می‌زند و سپس به نرمی از گلویت پایین می‌رود؛

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32 زیرا در پایان، مثل مار سمی تو را نیش خواهد زد و چون افعی تو را خواهد گزید.

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33 چشمانت چیزهای عجیب و غریب خواهند دید و گرفتار وهم و خیال خواهی شد.

Thy eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.

34 مانند کسی خواهی بود که بر سر دکل کشتی که دستخوش امواج دریاست خوابیده باشد.

And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35 خواهی گفت: «مرا زدند ولی دردی احساس نمی‌کنم. کی به هوش می‌آیم تا پیاله‌ای دیگر بنوشم؟»

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
