امثال 14

1 زن دانا خانه خود را بنا می‌کند، اما زن نادان با دست خود خانه‌اش را خراب می‌کند.

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

2 کسانی که به راستی عمل می‌کنند به خداوند احترام می‌گذارند، ولی اشخاص بدکار او را تحقیر می‌کنند.

He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but [he that is] perverse in his ways despiseth him.

3 نادان چوب سخنانِ متکبرانهٔ خود را می‌خورد، ولی سخنان مرد دانا او را محافظت می‌کند.

In the mouth of the foolish [is] a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

4 اگر در طویله گاو نباشد، طویله تمیز می‌ماند، اما بدون گاو نمی‌توان محصول زیادی به دست آورد.

Where no oxen [are], the crib [is] clean: but much increase [is] by the strength of the ox.

5 شاهد امین دروغ نمی‌گوید، ولی از دهان شاهد ناراست دروغ می‌بارد.

A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

6 کسی که همه چیز را به باد مسخره می‌گیرد هرگز نمی‌تواند حکمت پیدا کند، اما شخص فهیم به آسانی آن را به دست می‌آورد.

A scorner seeketh wisdom, and [findeth it] not: but knowledge [is] easy unto him that understandeth.

7 از احمقان دوری کن زیرا چیزی ندارند به تو یاد دهند.

Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not [in him] the lips of knowledge.

8 حکمت شخص عاقل راهنمای اوست، اما حماقت احمقان باعث گمراهی آنان می‌شود.

The wisdom of the prudent [is] to understand his way: but the folly of fools [is] deceit.

9 نادانان با گناه بازی می‌کنند، اما درستکاران رضایت خدا را می‌طلبند.

Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous [there is] favour.

10 تنها دل شخص است که تلخی جان او را احساس می‌کند و در شادی او نیز کسی جز خودش نمی‌تواند سهیم باشد.

The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.

11 خانهٔ بدکاران خراب می‌شود، اما خیمهٔ درستکاران وسعت می‌یابد.

The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.

12 راههایی هستند که به نظر انسان راست می‌آیند اما عاقبت به مرگ منتهی می‌شوند.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.

13 خنده نمی‌تواند اندوه دل را پنهان سازد؛ هنگامی که خنده پایان می‌یابد، درد و اندوه برجای خود باقی می‌ماند.

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth [is] heaviness.

14 آدم خدانشناس نتیجهٔ کارهای خود را خواهد دید و شخص نیک از ثمرهٔ اعمال خویش بهره خواهد برد.

The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man [shall be satisfied] from himself.

15 آدم ساده لوح هر حرفی را باور می‌کند، اما شخص زیرک سنجیده رفتار می‌نماید.

The simple believeth every word: but the prudent [man] looketh well to his going.

16 شخص دانا محتاط است و از خطر دوری می‌کند، ولی آدم نادان از روی غرور، خود را به خطر می‌اندازد.

A wise [man] feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

17 آدم تندخو کارهای احمقانه می‌کند و شخص حیله‌گر مورد نفرت قرار می‌گیرد.

[He that is] soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

18 حماقت نصیب جاهلان می‌شود و دانایی نصیب زیرکان.

The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

19 بدکاران عاقبت در برابر نیکان سر تعظیم فرود خواهند آورد و محتاج آنان خواهند شد.

The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.

20 ثروتمندان دوستان بسیار دارند، اما شخص فقیر را حتی همسایه‌هایش تحقیر می‌کند.

The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich [hath] many friends.

21 خوار شمردن فقرا گناه است. خوشا به حال کسی که بر آنها ترحم کند.

He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy [is] he.

22 کسانی که نقشه‌های پلید در سر می‌پرورانند گمراه خواهند شد، ولی آنانی که نیت خوب دارند مورد محبت و اعتماد قرار خواهند گرفت.

Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth [shall be] to them that devise good.

23 کسی که زحمت می‌کشد منفعت عایدش می‌شود، ولی آنکه فقط حرف می‌زند فقیر خواهد شد.

In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips [tendeth] only to penury.

24 ثروت نصیب دانایان خواهد شد، اما پاداش احمقان حماقت ایشان است.

The crown of the wise [is] their riches: [but] the foolishness of fools [is] folly.

25 شاهد راستگو جان مردم را نجات می‌دهد، اما شاهد دروغگو به مردم خیانت می‌کند.

A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful [witness] speaketh lies.

26 کسی که از خداوند می‌ترسد تکیه‌گاه محکمی دارد و فرزندانش در امان خواهند بود.

In the fear of the LORD [is] strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

27 خداترسی چشمهٔ حیات است و انسان را از دامهای مرگ دور نگه می‌دارد.

The fear of the LORD [is] a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

28 عظمت یک پادشاه بستگی به تعداد مردمی دارد که بر آنها فرمان می‌راند. پادشاه بدون قوم نابود می‌شود.

In the multitude of people [is] the king’s honour: but in the want of people [is] the destruction of the prince.

29 کسی که صبر و تحمل دارد شخص بسیار عاقلی است، اما از آدم تندخو حماقت سر می‌زند.

[He that is] slow to wrath [is] of great understanding: but [he that is] hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

30 آرامش فکر به بدن سلامتی می‌بخشد، اما حسادت مانند خوره جان را می‌خورد.

A sound heart [is] the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

31 هر که به فقرا ظلم کند به آفرینندهٔ آنها اهانت کرده است و هر که به فقرا ترحم نماید، به خدا احترام گذاشته است.

He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.

32 خداشناسان وقتی بمیرند پناهگاهی دارند، اما گناهکاران به‌وسیلۀ گناهان خودشان تباه می‌شوند.

The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

33 حکمت در دل دانایان ساکن است، اما در میان نادانان جای ندارد.

Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but [that which is] in the midst of fools is made known.

34 درستکاری مایه سرافرازی یک قوم است و گناه مایه رسوایی آن.

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin [is] a reproach to any people.

35 پادشاه از خدمتگزاران کاردان خشنود می‌گردد، ولی کسانی که دردسر ایجاد می‌کنند مورد غضب او واقع می‌شوند.

The king’s favour [is] toward a wise servant: but his wrath is [against] him that causeth shame.
