| مردم می‌دانند چگونه نقره را از معدن استخراج نمایند، طلا را تصفیه کنند، | 1 |
Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold which they refine;
| آهن را از زمین بیرون آورند و مس را از سنگ جدا سازند. | 2 |
Iron is taken out of the dust, and copper is molten out of the stone.
| آنها می‌دانند چطور معادن تاریک را روشن کنند و در جستجوی سنگهای معدن تا عمقهای تاریک زمین فرو روند. | 3 |
[Man] putteth an end to the darkness, and exploreth to the utmost limit, the stones of darkness and of the shadow of death.
| آنها در نقاطی دور دست، جایی که پای بشری بدان راه نیافته، در دل زمین نقب می‌زنند و از طنابها آویزان شده، به عمق معادن می‌روند. | 4 |
He openeth a shaft far from the inhabitants [of the earth]: forgotten of the foot, they hang suspended; away below men they hover.
| مردم می‌دانند چگونه از روی زمین غذا تهیه کنند، در حالی که در زیر پوستهٔ همین زمین، آتش نهفته است. | 5 |
As for the earth, out of it cometh bread, and underneath it is turned up as by fire;
| آنها می‌دانند چگونه از سنگهای آن یاقوت و طلا به دست بیاورند. | 6 |
The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold.
| حتی پرندگان شکاری راه معادن را نمی‌دانند و چشم هیچ عقابی آن را نمی‌تواند ببیند؛ | 7 |
It is a path no bird of prey knoweth, and the vulture's eye hath not seen it;
| پای شیر یا جانور درندهٔ دیگری به این معادن نرسیده است؛ | 8 |
The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed over it.
| ولی مردم می‌دانند چطور سنگهای خارا را تکه‌تکه نموده، کوهها را از بیخ و بن برکنند، | 9 |
[Man] putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock, he overturneth the mountains by the root.
| صخره‌ها را بشکافند و به سنگهای قیمتی دست یابند. | 10 |
He cutteth out channels in the rocks, and his eye seeth every precious thing.
| آنها حتی سرچشمهٔ رودها را کاوش می‌کنند و گنجهای مخفی از آن بیرون می‌آورند. | 11 |
He bindeth the streams that they drip not, and what is hidden he bringeth forth to light.
| مردم همهٔ اینها را می‌دانند، ولی نمی‌دانند فهم و حکمت را در کجا بیابند. | 12 |
But wisdom, where shall it be found? and where is the place of understanding?
| حکمت در بین انسانها پیدا نمی‌شود و هیچ‌کس ارزش آن را نمی‌داند. | 13 |
Man knoweth not the value thereof; and it is not found in the land of the living.
| اقیانوسها می‌گویند: «در اینجا حکمت نیست.» و دریاها جواب می‌دهند: «در اینجا هم نیست.» | 14 |
The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me.
| حکمت را با طلا و نقره نمی‌توان خرید، | 15 |
Choice gold cannot be given for it, nor silver be weighed for its price.
| و نه با طلای خالص و سنگهای قیمتی. | 16 |
It is not set in the balance with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, and the sapphire.
| حکمت از طلا و الماس بسیار گرانبهاتر است و آن را نمی‌توان با جواهرات خریداری کرد. | 17 |
Gold and glass cannot be compared to it, nor vessels of fine gold be its exchange.
| مرجان و بلور در برابر حکمت هیچ ارزشی ندارند. قیمت آن از لعل بسیار گرانتر است. | 18 |
Corals and crystal are no more remembered; yea, the acquisition of wisdom is above rubies.
| نه می‌توان آن را با زبرجد مرغوب خرید و نه با طلای ناب. | 19 |
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be compared to it, neither shall it be set in the balance with pure gold.
| پس حکمت را از کجا می‌توان به دست آورد؟ در کجا پیدا می‌شود؟ | 20 |
Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
| زیرا از چشمان تمامی افراد بشر پنهان است. حتی از چشمان تیزبین پرندگان هوا نیز مخفی است؛ | 21 |
For it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the fowl of the heavens.
| هلاکت و مرگ می‌گویند: «ما فقط شایعاتی در مورد مکان حکمت شنیده‌ایم.» | 22 |
Destruction and death say, We have heard its report with our ears.
| فقط خدا می‌داند که حکمت را کجا می‌توان پیدا کرد؛ | 23 |
God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth its place:
| زیرا او تمامی زمین را زیر نظر دارد و آنچه را که در زیر آسمان است مشاهده می‌کند. | 24 |
For he looketh to the ends of the earth, he seeth under the whole heaven.
| او باد را به حرکت درمی‌آورد و حدود اقیانوسها را تعیین می‌کند. | 25 |
In making a weight for the wind, and meting out the waters by measure,
| به باران فرمان می‌دهد که ببارد و مسیر برق آسمان را تعیین می‌کند. | 26 |
In appointing a statute for the rain, and a way for the thunder's flash:
| پس او می‌داند حکمت کجاست. او آن را آزمایش کرده و تأیید نموده است، | 27 |
Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out;
| و به افراد بشر می‌گوید: «بدانید که ترس از خداوند، حکمت واقعی، و دوری نمودن از شرارت، فهم حقیقی می‌باشد.» | 28 |
And unto man he said, Lo, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
