ارمیا 14

1 خداوند دربارهٔ خشکسالی یهودا به ارمیا چنین فرمود:

So much of the word of Yahweh as came unto Jeremiah, concerning the matter of the drought: —

2 «سرزمین یهودا عزادار است؛ زندگی و جنب و جوش از شهرها رخت بربسته؛ مردم همه ماتم زده‌اند و صدای آه و ناله‌شان از اورشلیم به گوش می‌رسد.

Judah mourneth, And the gates thereof, pine They lie in gloom on the ground, —And, the outcry of Jerusalem, hath ascended;

3 ثروتمندان خدمتکاران خود را برای آوردن آب به سر چاهها می‌فرستند، اما چاهها همه خشک است؛ پس ناامید و سرافکنده، دست خالی باز می‌گردند.

And, their nobles have sent their menials to the waters, —They have been to the pits, They have found no water They have returned, their vessels empty, They are pale and ashamed and have covered their heads.

4 کشاورزان مأیوس و غمگینند، چون باران نباریده و زمین، خشک شده و ترک خورده است!

Because the ground, is cracked, For there hath been no rain in the land, The plowmen are pale They have covered their heads.

5 در بیابان، آهو بچه‌اش را به حال خود رها می‌کند، چون علوفه نمی‌یابد.

For, even the hind of the field hath calved and forsaken, Because there is no young herbage;

6 گورخرها نیز روی تپه‌های خشک می‌ایستند و مثل شغالهای تشنه، نفس‌نفس می‌زنند و در جستجوی علف، چشمانشان را خسته می‌کنند، ولی چیزی برای خوردن نمی‌یابند.»

Yea, wild asses stand still on the bare heights, They pant for air like jackals, —Dimmed are their eyes Because there is no grass.

7 ای خداوند، اگرچه گناهان ما، ما را محکوم می‌سازند، ولی به خاطر عزت نام خود ما را یاری نما! ما بسیار از تو دور شده‌ایم و در حق تو گناه کرده‌ایم.

Though, our iniquities, have testified against us, O Yahweh, effectually work thou for the sake of thy Name, —For our apostasies have abounded Against thee, have we sinned.

8 ای امید اسرائیل، ای کسی که در تنگنا و گرفتاری نجا‌ت‌دهندۀ مایی، چرا مثل غریبی که از سرزمین ما رد می‌شود و مسافری که شبی نزد ما می‌ماند، نسبت به ما بیگانه گردیده‌ای؟

Thou Hope of Israel, His Saviour in the time of distress, —Wherefore shouldst thou be as a sojourner in the and? Or as a wayfarer, who hath turned aside to lodge for the night?

9 آیا تو هم درمانده شده‌ای؟ آیا مانند جنگجوی ناتوانی گردیده‌ای که کاری از او ساخته نیست؟ خداوندا، تو در میان مایی و ما نام تو را بر خود داریم و قوم تو هستیم؛ پس ای خداوند، ما را به حال خود رها نکن!

Wherefore, shouldst thou be as a man astounded, As a mighty man who cannot save? Yet, thou, art in our midst—O Yahweh And, thy Name, on us, hath been called Do not abandon us!

10 ولی خداوند به این قوم چنین جواب می‌دهد: «شما خود دوست داشتید از من دور شوید و سرگردان گردید، و هیچ کوشش نکردید احکام مرا بجا آورید. پس من نیز، دیگر شما را نمی‌پذیرم. تمام کارهای بدتان را به یاد آورده، به سبب گناهانتان شما را مجازات خواهم نمود.»

Thus, saith Yahweh To this people In this way, have they loved to wander, Their feet, have they not restrained, —Yahweh, therefore hath not accepted them, Now, will he call to mind their iniquity, —That he may punish their sins.

11 خداوند به من گفت: «از این پس از من نخواه که این قوم را یاری نمایم و برکت دهم.

And Yahweh said unto me, —Do not pray for this people for blessing;

12 حتی اگر روزه بگیرند، به دادشان نخواهم رسید؛ اگر هم هدیه و قربانی بیاورند، نخواهم پذیرفت؛ بلکه ایشان را با جنگ و قحطی و وبا هلاک خواهم کرد!»

Though they fast, I am not going to hearken unto their loud cry, and Though they offer ascending-sacrifice and meal-offering, I am not going to accept them, —For with sword and with famine and with pestilence, am, I, about to consume them.

13 آنگاه گفتم: «خداوندا، انبیایشان می‌گویند که نه جنگ می‌شود، نه قحطی! آنها به مردم می‌گویند که تو به ایشان صلح و آرامش پایدار می‌بخشی.»

Then said I, Ah, My Lord Yahweh! Lo! the prophets, are saying to them—Ye shall not see the sword And famine, shall ye not have, —For prosperity in truth, will I give you, in this place.

14 خداوند فرمود: «این انبیا به نام من به دروغ نبوّت می‌کنند؛ من نه آنها را فرستاده‌ام و نه پیامی به ایشان داده‌ام؛ رؤیاهای آنان از جانب من نیست، بلکه آنان از سحر و جادو و تخیل دلهای فریبکار خود با شما سخن می‌گویند.

So then Yahweh said unto me, Falsehood, are the prophets prophesying in my name, I have not sent them Neither have I commanded them, Neither have I spoken unto them, —A vision of falsehood, and A divination of worthlessness and A fraud of their own hearts, They, are prophesying unto you.

15 من این انبیای فریبکار را که به نام من پیام می‌آورند مجازات خواهم کرد، زیرا من به ایشان سخنی نگفته‌ام. آنها می‌گویند که نه جنگ می‌شود نه قحطی، پس ایشان را در جنگ و قحطی هلاک خواهم ساخت!

Therefore, Thus, saith Yahweh concerning the prophets who are prophesying in my Name though, I, sent them not, and yet, they have been, saying, Neither sword nor famine, shall there be in this land, —By sword or by famine, shall, those prophets, be consumed;

16 و این قوم که به این پیشگویی‌ها گوش می‌دهند، به همان‌گونه کشته خواهند شد و نعشهایشان در کوچه‌های اورشلیم خواهند افتاد و کسی باقی نخواهد ماند تا جنازه‌ها را دفن کند؛ زن و شوهر، دختر و پسر، همه از بین خواهند رفت، زیرا من آنها را به سبب گناهانشان مجازات خواهم نمود.

And the people to whom they have been prophesying shall be getting cast out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword, and of there being none to give burial unto them, them, their wives, nor their sons nor their daughters, —So will I pour out upon them their own wickedness.

17 «پس با ایشان دربارهٔ اندوه خود سخن بران و بگو:”شب و روز از چشمانم اشک غم جاری است و آرام و قرار ندارم، چون هموطنانم به دم تیغ افتاده‌اند و روی زمین در خون خود می‌غلتند.

Therefore shalt thou say unto them this word, Let mine eyes, run down with tears night and day, And let them not rest, —For with a grievous injury, hath been injured the virgin the daughter of my people, With a wound, severe indeed!

18 اگر به صحرا بروم، نعش کسانی را می‌بینم که به ضرب شمشیر کشته شده‌اند؛ و اگر به شهر بروم با کسانی روبرو می‌شوم که در اثر گرسنگی و بیماری در حال مرگند؛ هم انبیا و هم کاهنان به سرزمینی بیگانه برده شده‌اند.“»

If I have gone out into the field, Then lo! the slain of the sword! And, if I have entered the city, Then lo! the diseases of famine! For, both prophet and priest, have trafficked against the land unnoticed.

19 قوم اسرائیل می‌گویند: «ای خداوند، آیا یهودا را کاملاً ترک کرده‌ای؟ آیا از اهالی اورشلیم بیزار شده‌ای؟ چرا ما را آنچنان زده‌ای که هیچ درمانی برایمان نباشد؟ ما منتظر بودیم که شفایمان بدهی، ولی چنین نشد؛ در انتظار صلح و آرامش بودیم، اما اضطراب و ترس ما را فرا گرفت!

Hast thou, utterly rejected, Judah? Zion itself, hath thy soul loathed? Why, hast thou smitten us so that there is for us no healing? A waiting For prosperity, but no welfare, and For a time of healing, but lo! terror!

20 ای خداوند، ما به شرارت خود و گناه اجدادمان اعتراف می‌کنیم. بله، ما در حق تو گناه کرده‌ایم.

We acknowledge O Yahweh Our own lawlessness The iniquity of our fathers, —For we have sinned against thee.

21 خداوندا، به خاطر نام خودت ما را طرد نکن و اورشلیم، جایگاه استقرار تخت پر شکوهت را ذلیل و خوار مساز. عهدی را که با ما بستی به یاد آور و آن را نشکن!

Do not despise—for the sake of thy Name, Do not treat with contempt—the throne of thy glory, —Remember!—do not break thy covenant with us.

22 آیا بت می‌تواند باران عطا کند؟ و یا آسمان می‌تواند به خودی خود باران بباراند؟ ای یهوه خدای ما، چه کسی جز تو می‌تواند چنین کارهایی را به انجام رساند؟ از این رو ما، تنها به تو امید بسته‌ایم!»

Are there, among the vanities of the nations senders of rain? Or can, the heavens themselves, give myriad drops? Art not, thou, he, O Yahweh our God? Therefore will we wait for thee, For, thou, hast made all these.
