پیدایش 16

1 اما سارای زن ابرام، فرزندی برای او به دنیا نیاورده بود. سارای کنیز مصری داشت به نام هاجر.

And Sarai, Abram’s wife, has not borne to him, and she has a handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name [is] Hagar;

2 پس سارای به ابرام گفت: «خداوند مرا از بچه‌دار شدن بازداشته است. پس تو با کنیزم همبستر شو، تا شاید برای من فرزندی به دنیا آوَرَد.» ابرام با پیشنهاد سارای موافقت کرد.

and Sarai says to Abram, “Now behold, YHWH has restrained me from bearing, please go in to my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her”; and Abram listens to the voice of Sarai.

3 پس سارای، همسر ابرام، کنیز مصری خود هاجر را گرفته، به ابرام به زنی داد. (این واقعه ده سال پس از سکونت ابرام در کنعان اتفاق افتاد.)

And Sarai, Abram’s wife, takes Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram’s dwelling in the land of Canaan, and gives her to her husband Abram—to him for a wife,

4 ابرام با هاجر همبستر شد و او آبستن گردید. هاجر وقتی دریافت که حامله است، مغرور شد و از آن پس، بانویش سارای را تحقیر می‌کرد.

and he goes in to Hagar, and she conceives, and she sees that she has conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

5 آنگاه سارای به ابرام گفت: «تقصیر توست که این کنیز مرا حقیر می‌شمارد. خودم او را به تو دادم، ولی از آن لحظه‌ای که فهمید آبستن است، مرا تحقیر می‌کند. خداوند خودش حق مرا از تو بگیرد.»

And Sarai says to Abram, “My violence [is] for you; I have given my handmaid into your bosom, and she sees that she has conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; YHWH judges between me and you.”

6 ابرام جواب داد: «او کنیز توست، هر طور که صلاح می‌دانی با او رفتار کن.» پس سارای بنای بدرفتاری با هاجر را گذاشت و او از خانه فرار کرد.

And Abram says to Sarai, “Behold, your handmaid [is] in your hand, do to her that which is good in your eyes”; and Sarai afflicted her, and she flees from her presence.

7 فرشتهٔ خداوند هاجر را نزدیک چشمۀ آبی در صحرا که سر راه «شور» است، یافت.

And the Messenger of YHWH finds her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way [to] Shur,

8 فرشته گفت: «ای هاجر، کنیز سارای، از کجا آمده‌ای و به کجا می‌روی؟» گفت: «من از خانهٔ بانویم سارای فرار می‌کنم.»

and He says, “Hagar, Sarai’s handmaid, from where have you come, and to where do you go?” And she says, “From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.”

9 فرشتهٔ خداوند به او گفت: «نزد بانوی خود برگرد و مطیع او باش.»

And the Messenger of YHWH says to her, “Return to your mistress, and humble yourself under her hands”;

10 و نیز گفت: «من نسل تو را بی‌شمار می‌گردانم.»

and the Messenger of YHWH says to her, “Multiplying I multiply your seed, and it is not numbered from multitude”;

11 فرشته ادامه داد: «اینک تو حامله هستی، و پسری خواهی زایید. نام او را اسماعیل (یعنی”خدا می‌شنود“) بگذار، چون خداوند آه و نالهٔ تو را شنیده است.

and the Messenger of YHWH says to her, “Behold you [are] conceiving, and bearing a son, and have called his name Ishmael, for YHWH has listened to your affliction;

12 پسر تو مردی وحشی خواهد بود و با برادران خود سر سازگاری نخواهد داشت. او بر ضد همه و همه بر ضد او خواهند بود.»

and he is a wild-donkey man, his hand against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him—and before the face of all his brothers he dwells.”

13 هاجر با خود گفت: «آیا براستی خدا را دیدم و زنده ماندم؟» پس خداوند را که با او سخن گفته بود «اَنتَ ایل رُئی» (یعنی «تو خدایی هستی که می‌بینی») نامید.

And she calls the Name of YHWH who is speaking to her, “You [are], O God, my beholder”; for she said, “Even here have I looked behind my beholder?”

14 به همین جهت چاهی که بین قادش و بارد است «بئرلَحَی رُئی» (یعنی «چاه خدای زنده‌ای که مرا می‌بیند») نامیده شد.

Therefore has one called the well, “The well of the Living One, my beholder”; behold, between Kadesh and Bered.

15 پس هاجر برای ابرام پسری به دنیا آورد و ابرام او را اسماعیل نامید.

And Hagar bears a son to Abram; and Abram calls the name of his son, whom Hagar has borne, Ishmael;

16 در این زمان ابرام هشتاد و شش ساله بود.

and Abram [is] a son of eighty-six years in Hagar’s bearing Ishmael to Abram.
