| اینها سخنان پسر داوود است که در اورشلیم سلطنت می‌کرد و به «معلم» معروف بود: | 1 |
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
| بیهودگی است! «معلم» می‌گوید: زندگی، سراسر بیهودگی است! | 2 |
Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
| آدمی از تمامی زحماتی که در زیر آسمان می‌کشد چه سودی نصیبش می‌شود؟ | 3 |
What profit has a man of all his labor which he takes under the sun?
| نسلها یکی پس از دیگری می‌آیند و می‌روند، ولی دنیا همچنان باقی است. | 4 |
One generation passes away, and another generation comes: but the earth stays for ever.
| آفتاب طلوع می‌کند و غروب می‌کند و باز با شتاب به جایی باز می‌گردد که باید از آن طلوع کند. | 5 |
The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to his place where he arose.
| باد به طرف جنوب می‌وزد، و از آنجا به طرف شمال دور می‌زند. می‌وزد و می‌وزد و باز به جای اول خود باز می‌گردد. | 6 |
The wind goes toward the south, and turns about to the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to his circuits.
| آب رودخانه‌ها به دریا می‌ریزد، اما دریا هرگز پر نمی‌شود. آبها دوباره به رودخانه‌ها باز می‌گردند و باز روانه دریا می‌شوند. | 7 |
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; to the place from where the rivers come, thither they return again.
| همه چیز خسته کننده است. آنقدر خسته کننده که زبان از وصف آن ناتوان است. نه چشم از دیدن سیر می‌شود و نه گوش از شنیدن. | 8 |
All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
| آنچه بوده باز هم خواهد بود، و آنچه شده باز هم خواهد شد. زیر آسمان هیچ چیز تازه‌ای وجود ندارد. | 9 |
The thing that has been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
| آیا چیزی هست که درباره‌اش بتوان گفت: «این تازه است»؟ همه چیز پیش از ما، از گذشته‌های دور وجود داشته است. | 10 |
Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it has been already of old time, which was before us.
| یادی از گذشتگان نیست. آیندگان نیز از ما یاد نخواهند کرد. | 11 |
There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
| من که «معلم» هستم، در اورشلیم بر اسرائیل سلطنت می‌کردم. | 12 |
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
| با حکمت خود، سخت به مطالعه و تحقیق دربارهٔ هر چه در زیر آسمان انجام می‌شود پرداختم. این چه کار سخت و پرزحمتی است که خدا به عهدهٔ انسان گذاشته است! | 13 |
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail has God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
| هر چه را که زیر آسمان انجام می‌شود دیده‌ام. همه چیز بیهوده است، درست مانند دویدن به دنبال باد! | 14 |
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
| کج را نمی‌توان راست کرد و چیزی را که نیست نمی‌توان به شمار آورد. | 15 |
That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
| با خود فکر کردم: «من از همهٔ پادشاهانی که پیش از من در اورشلیم بوده‌اند، حکیمتر هستم و حکمت و دانش بسیار کسب کرده‌ام.» | 16 |
I communed with my own heart, saying, See, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yes, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
| در صدد برآمدم فرق بین حکمت و حماقت، و دانش و جهالت را بفهمم؛ ولی دریافتم که این نیز مانند دویدن به دنبال باد، کار بیهوده‌ای است. | 17 |
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
| انسان هر چه بیشتر حکمت می‌آموزد محزونتر می‌شود و هر چه بیشتر دانش می‌اندوزد، غمگینتر می‌گردد. | 18 |
For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.
