1 پس از بررسی تمام این چیزها فهمیدم که هر چند زندگی اشخاص درستکار و خردمند در دست خداست، ولی رویدادهای خوشایند و ناخوشایند برای آنان رخ می‌دهد و انسان نمی‌فهمد چرا؟

For all this did I reflect over in my heart and to explain all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their services, are in the hand of God: that man knoweth neither love nor hatred; it is all [ordained] before them;

2 این رویدادها برای همهٔ انسانها رخ می‌دهد، چه درستکار باشند چه بدکار، چه خوب باشند چه بد، چه پاک باشند چه ناپاک، چه دیندار باشند چه بی‌دین. فرقی نمی‌کند که انسان خوب باشد یا گناهکار، قسم دروغ بخورد یا از قسم خوردن بترسد.

Every thing as it is to happen to all; there is but one occurrence for the righteous, and for the wicked; for the good and for the clean, and for the unclean; and for him that sacrificeth, and for him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

3 یکی از بدترین چیزهایی که در زیر این آسمان اتفاق می‌افتد این است که همه نوع واقعه برای همه رخ می‌دهد. به همین دلیل است که انسان مادامی که زنده است دیوانه‌وار به شرارت روی می‌آورد.

This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one occurrence for all, and that also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and that madness is in their heart while they live, and after this they go to the dead.

4 فقط برای زنده‌ها امید هست. سگ زنده از شیر مرده بهتر است!

For whoever is yet united with all the living hath still hope; for a living dog fareth better than a dead lion.

5 زیرا زنده‌ها اقلاً می‌دانند که خواهند مرد! ولی مرده‌ها چیزی نمی‌دانند. برای مرده‌ها پاداشی نیست و حتی یاد آنها نیز از خاطره‌ها محو می‌شود.

For the living know that they will die; but the dead know not the least; nor have they longer any reward; for their memory is forgotten.

6 محبتشان، نفرتشان و احساساتشان، همه از بین می‌رود و آنها دیگر تا ابد در زیر این آسمان نقشی نخواهند داشت.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, are now already lost; and they will have never more a portion in all that is done under the sun.

7 پس برو و نان خود را با لذت بخور و شراب خود را با شادی بنوش و بدان که این کار تو مورد قبول خداوند است.

Go, eat with joy thy bread, and drink with a merry heart thy wine, if God have already received thy works in favor.

8 همیشه شاد و خرم باش!

At all times let thy garments be white, and let oil not be wanting on thy head.

9 در این روزهای بیهودهٔ زندگی که خداوند در زیر این آسمان به تو داده است با زنی که دوستش داری خوش بگذران، چون این است پاداش همهٔ زحماتی که در زندگی خود، زیر این آسمان می‌کشی.

Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which God hath given thee under the sun, [yea, ] all the days of thy vanity; for this is thy portion in this life, and in thy toil with which thou toilest under the sun.

10 هر کاری که می‌کنی آن را خوب انجام بده، چون در عالم مردگان، که بعد از مرگ به آنجا خواهی رفت، نه کار کردن هست، نه نقشه کشیدن، نه دانستن و نه فهمیدن. (Sheol h7585)

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do with thy might, that do; for there is no work, nor experience, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the nether world, whither thou goest.— (Sheol h7585)

11 من متوجه چیز دیگری نیز شدم و آن این بود که در دنیا همیشه سریعترین دونده، برندهٔ مسابقه نمی‌شود و همیشه قویترین سرباز در میدان جنگ پیروز نمی‌گردد. اشخاص دانا همیشه شکمشان سیر نیست و افراد عاقل و ماهر همیشه به ثروت و نعمت نمی‌رسند، بلکه در همگی دست زمان و حادثه در کار است.

I turned about, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the mighty; and that also the wise have no bread, nor yet the men of understanding riches, nor yet men of knowledge favor; but time and fate will overtake them all.

12 انسان هرگز نمی‌داند چه بر سرش خواهد آمد. همان‌طور که ماهی در تور گرفتار می‌شود و پرنده به دام می‌افتد، انسان نیز وقتی که انتظارش را ندارد در دام بلا گرفتار می‌گردد.

For man also knoweth not his time, like the fishes that are caught in an evil net, and like the birds that are caught in the snare: like these are the sons of men ensnared at an evil time, when it falleth upon them suddenly.

13 در زیر این آسمان با نمونه‌ای از حکمت روبرو شدم که بر من تأثیر عمیقی گذاشت:

Also in this manner have I seen wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

14 شهر کوچکی بود که عده کمی در آن زندگی می‌کردند. پادشاه بزرگی با سپاه خود آمده، آن را محاصره نمود و تدارک حمله به شهر را دید.

There was a little city, and the men therein were few; and there came against it a great king, who enclosed it, and built around it great works of siege;

15 در آن شهر مرد فقیری زندگی می‌کرد که بسیار خردمند بود. او با حکمتی که داشت توانست شهر را نجات دهد. اما هیچ‌کس او را به یاد نیاورد.

But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he delivered the city by his wisdom; yet no man had thought of that same poor man.

16 آنگاه فهمیدم که اگرچه حکمت از قوت بهتر است، با وجود این اگر شخص خردمند، فقیر باشد خوار شمرده می‌شود و کسی به سخنانش اعتنا نمی‌کند.

Then said I, Wisdom is better than might: although the poor man's wisdom is held in contempt, and his words are not heard.

17 ولی با این حال، سخنان آرام شخص خردمند از فریاد پادشاه نادانان بهتر است.

The words of wise men heard in quiet are better than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 حکمت از اسلحهٔ جنگ مفیدتر است، اما اشتباه یک نادان می‌تواند خرابی زیادی به بار آورد.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner causes much good to be lost.
