اول سموئیل 7

1 مردم قریهٔ یعاریم آمده، صندوق عهد خداوند را به خانهٔ کوهستانی ابیناداب بردند و پسرش العازار را برای نگهداری آن تعیین کردند.

And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of YHWH, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of YHWH.

2 صندوق عهد، مدت بیست سال در آنجا باقی ماند. طی آن مدت، بنی‌اسرائیل در ماتم بودند، زیرا خداوند ایشان را ترک گفته بود.

And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after YHWH.

3 سموئیل به بنی‌اسرائیل گفت: «اگر با تمام دل به سوی خداوند بازگشت نمایید و خدایان بیگانه و عشتاروت را از میان خود دور کنید و تصمیم بگیرید که فقط خداوند را اطاعت و عبادت نمایید، آنگاه خدا هم شما را از دست فلسطینی‌ها نجات خواهد داد.»

And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto YHWH with all your hearts, then put away the strangeelohim and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto YHWH, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

4 پس آنها بتهای بعل و عشتاروت را نابود کردند و فقط خداوند را پرستش نمودند.

Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served YHWH only.

5 سپس، سموئیل به ایشان گفت: «همهٔ شما به مصفه بیایید و من برای شما در حضور خداوند دعا خواهم کرد.»

And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto YHWH.

6 بنابراین همهٔ آنها در مصفه جمع شدند. سپس از چاه آب کشیدند و به حضور خداوند ریختند و تمام روز را روزه گرفته، اعتراف کردند که به خداوند گناه کرده‌اند. و سموئیل در مصفه به رهبری بنی‌اسرائیل تعیین شد.

And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before YHWH, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against YHWH. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

7 وقتی رهبران فلسطینی شنیدند که بنی‌اسرائیل در مصفه گرد آمده‌اند، سپاه خود را آمادهٔ جنگ کرده، عازم مصفه شدند. هنگامی که قوم اسرائیل متوجه شدند که فلسطینی‌ها نزدیک می‌شوند، بسیار ترسیدند.

And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, rulers of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

8 آنها از سموئیل خواهش نموده، گفتند: «از دعا کردن به درگاه خداوند دست نکش تا او ما را از دست فلسطینی‌ها نجات دهد.»

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto YHWH our Elohim for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

9 سموئیل برهٔ شیرخواره‌ای را به عنوان قربانی سوختنی به خداوند تقدیم کرد و از او درخواست نمود تا اسرائیلی‌ها را برهاند. خداوند دعای او را اجابت فرمود.

And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto YHWH: and Samuel cried unto YHWH for Israel; and YHWH heard him.

10 درست در همان لحظه‌ای که سموئیل مشغول قربانی کردن بود، فلسطینی‌ها وارد جنگ شدند. اما خداوند از آسمان مانند رعد بانگ برآورد و فلسطینی‌ها پریشان شده، از اسرائیلی‌ها شکست خوردند.

And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but YHWH thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

11 اسرائیلی‌ها آنها را از مصفه تا آن سوی بیت‌کار تعقیب نموده، در طول راه همه را هلاک کردند.

And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.

12 آنگاه سموئیل سنگی گرفته، آن را بین مصفه و شن بر پا داشت و گفت: «تا به حال خداوند ما را کمک کرده است.» و آن سنگ را ابن‌عزر (یعنی «سنگ کمک») نامید.

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath YHWH helped us.

13 پس فلسطینی‌ها مغلوب شدند و تا زمانی که سموئیل زنده بود دیگر به اسرائیلی‌ها حمله نکردند، زیرا خداوند بر ضد فلسطینی‌ها عمل می‌کرد.

So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of YHWH was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14 شهرهای اسرائیلی، واقع در بین عقرون و جت که به دست فلسطینی‌ها افتاده بودند، دوباره به تصرف اسرائیل درآمدند. در میان اسرائیلی‌ها و اموری‌ها نیز در آن روزها صلح برقرار بود.

And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

15 سموئیل تا پایان عمرش داور بنی‌اسرائیل باقی ماند.

And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

16 او هر سال به بیت‌ئیل، جلجال، و مصفه می‌رفت و در آنجا به شکایات مردم رسیدگی می‌کرد.

And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.

17 بعد به خانهٔ خود در رامه برمی‌گشت و در آنجا نیز به حل مشکلات بنی‌اسرائیل می‌پرداخت. سموئیل در رامه یک مذبح برای خداوند بنا کرد.

And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto YHWH.
