امثال 17

۱ 1 لقمه خشک با سلامتی، بهتر است ازخانه پر از ضیافت با مخاصمت.

Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than a house full of feasting with strife.

۲ 2 بنده عاقل بر پسر پست فطرت مسلط خواهدبود، و میراث را با برادران تقسیم خواهد نمود.

A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that dealeth shamefully, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

۳ 3 بوته برای نقره و کوره به جهت طلا است، اماخداوند امتحان کننده دلها است.

The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but the LORD trieth the hearts.

۴ 4 شریر به لبهای دروغگو اصغا می‌کند، و مردکاذب به زبان فتنه انگیز گوش می‌دهد.

A evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

۵ 5 هر‌که فقیر را استهزا کند آفریننده خویش رامذمت می‌کند، و هر‌که از بلا خوش می‌شودبی سزا نخواهد ماند.

Whoso mocketh the poor blasphemeth his Maker; and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

۶ 6 تاج پیران، پسران پسرانند، و جلال فرزندان، پدران ایشانند.

Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

۷ 7 کلام کبرآمیز احمق را نمی شاید، و چندمرتبه زیاده لبهای دروغگو نجبا را.

Overbearing speech becometh not a churl; much less do lying lips a prince.

۸ 8 هدیه در نظر اهل آن سنگ گرانبها است که هر کجا توجه نماید برخوردار می‌شود.

A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever he turneth, he prospereth.

۹ 9 هر‌که گناهی را مستور کند طالب محبت می‌باشد، اما هر‌که امری را تکرار کند دوستان خالص را از هم جدا می‌سازد.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that harpeth on a matter estrangeth a familiar friend.

۱۰ 10 یک ملامت به مرد فهیم اثر می‌کند، بیشتراز صد تازیانه به مرد جاهل.

A rebuke entereth deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool.

۱۱ 11 مرد شریر طالب فتنه است و بس. لهذاقاصد ستمکیش نزد او فرستاده می‌شود.

A rebellious man seeketh only evil; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

۱۲ 12 اگر خرسی که بچه هایش کشته شود به انسان برخورد، بهتر است از مرد احمق در حماقت خود.

Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

۱۳ 13 کسی‌که به عوض نیکویی بدی می‌کند بلااز خانه او دور نخواهد شد.

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

۱۴ 14 ابتدای نزاع مثل رخنه کردن آب است، پس مخاصمه را ترک کن قبل از آنکه به مجادله برسد.

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before the quarrel break out.

۱۵ 15 هر‌که شریر را عادل شمارد و هر‌که عادل را ملزم سازد، هر دوی ایشان نزد خداوندمکروهند.

He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are an abomination to the LORD.

۱۶ 16 قیمت به جهت خریدن حکمت چرا به‌دست احمق باشد؟ و حال آنکه هیچ فهم ندارد.

Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?

۱۷ 17 دوست خالص در همه اوقات محبت می‌نماید، و برادر به جهت تنگی مولود شده است.

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

۱۸ 18 مرد ناقص العقل دست می‌دهد و در حضورهمسایه خود ضامن می‌شود.

A man void of understanding is he that striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.

۱۹ 19 هر‌که معصیت را دوست دارد منازعه رادوست می‌دارد، و هر‌که در خود را بلند سازدخرابی را می‌طلبد.

He loveth transgression that loveth strife; he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

۲۰ 20 کسی‌که دل کج دارد نیکویی را نخواهدیافت. و هر‌که زبان دروغگو دارد در بلا گرفتارخواهد شد.

He that hath a froward heart findeth no good; and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into evil.

۲۱ 21 هر‌که فرزند احمق آورد برای خویشتن غم پیدا می‌کند، و پدر فرزند ابله شادی نخواهد دید.

He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; and the father of a churl hath no joy.

۲۲ 22 دل‌شادمان شفای نیکو می‌بخشد، اما روح شکسته استخوانها را خشک می‌کند.

A merry heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

۲۳ 23 مرد شریر رشوه را از بغل می‌گیرد، تاراههای انصاف را منحرف سازد.

A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the ways of justice.

۲۴ 24 حکمت در مد نظر مرد فهیم است، اماچشمان احمق در اقصای زمین می‌باشد.

Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

۲۵ 25 پسر احمق برای پدر خویش حزن است، وبه جهت مادر خویش تلخی است.

A foolish son is vexation to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.

۲۶ 26 عادلان را نیز سرزنش نمودن خوب نیست، و نه ضرب زدن به نجبا به‌سبب راستی ایشان.

To punish also the righteous is not good, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.

۲۷ 27 صاحب معرفت سخنان خود را بازمی دارد، و هر‌که روح حلیم دارد مرد فطانت پیشه است.

He that spareth his words hath knowledge; and he that husbandeth his spirit is a man of discernment.

۲۸ 28 مرد احمق نیز چون خاموش باشد او راحکیم می‌شمارند، و هر‌که لبهای خود را می‌بنددفهیم است.

Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed as a man of understanding.
