۱ 1 کیست که مثل مرد حکیم باشد وکیست که تفسیر امر را بفهمد؟ حکمت روی انسان راروشن می‌سازد و سختی چهره او تبدیل می‌شود.

Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

۲ 2 من تو را می‌گویم حکم پادشاه را نگاه دار واین را به‌سبب سوگند خدا.

Keep the king's command, because of the oath to God.

۳ 3 شتاب مکن تا ازحضور وی بروی و در امر بد جزم منما زیرا که اوهر‌چه می‌خواهد به عمل می‌آورد.

Do not be hasty to go out of his presence. Do not persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him,

۴ 4 جایی که سخن پادشاه است قوت هست و کیست که به اوبگوید چه می‌کنی؟

for the king's word is supreme. Who can say to him, "What are you doing?"

۵ 5 هر‌که حکم را نگاه داردهیچ امر بد را نخواهد دید. و دل مرد حکیم وقت و قانون را می‌داند.

Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure.

۶ 6 زیرا که برای هر مطلب وقتی و قانونی است چونکه شرارت انسان بر وی سنگین است.

For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him.

۷ 7 زیرا آنچه را که واقع خواهد شداو نمی داند؛ و کیست که او را خبر دهد که چگونه خواهد شد؟

For he doesn't know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be?

۸ 8 کسی نیست که بر روح تسلطداشته باشد تا روح خود را نگاه دارد و کسی برروز موت تسلط ندارد؛ و در وقت جنگ مرخصی نیست و شرارت صاحبش را نجات نمی دهد.

There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

۹ 9 این همه را دیدم و دل خود را بر هر عملی که زیر آفتاب کرده شود مشغول ساختم، وقتی که انسان بر انسان به جهت ضررش حکمرانی می‌کند.

All this have I seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt.

۱۰ 10 و همچنین دیدم که شریران دفن شدند، و آمدند و از مکان مقدس رفتند و درشهری که در آن چنین عمل نمودند فراموش شدند. این نیز بطالت است.

So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from the holy place. They went and were praised in the city where they did this. This also is vanity.

۱۱ 11 چونکه فتوی برعمل بد بزودی مجرا نمی شود، از این جهت دل بنی آدم در اندرون ایشان برای بدکرداری جازم می شود.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

۱۲ 12 اگر‌چه گناهکار صد مرتبه شرارت ورزد و عمر دراز کند، معهذا می‌دانم برای آنانی که از خدا بترسند و به حضور وی خائف باشندسعادتمندی خواهد بود.

Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.

۱۳ 13 اما برای شریرسعادتمندی نخواهد بود و مثل سایه، عمر درازنخواهد کرد چونکه از خدا نمی ترسد.

But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow; because he doesn't fear God.

۱۴ 14 بطالتی هست که بر روی زمین کرده می‌شود، یعنی عادلان هستند که بر ایشان مثل عمل شریران واقع می‌شود و شریران‌اند که بر ایشان مثل عمل عادلان واقع می‌شود. پس گفتم که این نیز بطالت است.

There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

۱۵ 15 آنگاه شادمانی را مدح کردم زیرا که برای انسان زیر آسمان چیزی بهتر از این نیست که بخورد و بنوشد و شادی نماید و این در تمامی ایام عمرش که خدا در زیر آفتاب به وی دهد درمحنتش با او باقی ماند.

Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

۱۶ 16 چونکه دل خود را بر آن نهادم تا حکمت رابفهمم و تا شغلی را که بر روی زمین کرده شودببینم (چونکه هستند که شب و روز خواب را به چشمان خود نمی بینند)،

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes),

۱۷ 17 آنگاه تمامی صنعت خدا را دیدم که انسان، کاری را که زیر آفتاب کرده می‌شود نمی تواند درک نماید و هر‌چند انسان برای تجسس آن زیاده تر تفحص نماید آن راکمتر درک می‌نماید و اگر‌چه مرد حکیم نیز گمان برد که آن را می‌داند اما آن را درک نخواهد نمود.

then I saw all the work of God, that man can't find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won't find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won't be able to find it.
