جامعه 12

۱ 1 پس آفریننده خود را در روزهای جوانی ات بیاد آور قبل از آنکه روزهای بلا برسد و سالها برسد که بگویی مرا از اینهاخوشی نیست.

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

۲ 2 قبل از آنکه آفتاب و نور و ماه وستارگان تاریک شود و ابرها بعد از باران برگردد؛

While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

۳ 3 در روزی که محافظان خانه بلرزند و صاحبان قوت، خویشتن را خم نمایند و دستاس کنندگان چونکه کم‌اند باز ایستند و آنانی که از پنجره هامی نگرند تاریک شوند.

In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

۴ 4 و درها در کوچه بسته شود و آواز آسیاب پست گردد و از صدای گنجشک برخیزد و جمیع مغنیات ذلیل شوند.

And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

۵ 5 واز هر بلندی بترسند و خوفها در راه باشد ودرخت بادام شکوفه آورد و ملخی بار سنگین باشد و اشتها بریده شود. چونکه انسان به خانه جاودانی خود می‌رود و نوحه‌گران در کوچه گردش می‌کنند.

Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

۶ 6 قبل از آنکه مفتول نقره گسیخته شود و کاسه طلا شکسته گردد و سبو نزدچشمه خرد شود و چرخ بر چاه منکسر گردد،

Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

۷ 7 وخاک به زمین برگردد به طوری که بود. و روح نزدخدا که آن را بخشیده بود رجوع نماید.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

۸ 8 باطل اباطیل جامعه می‌گوید همه‌چیز بطالت است.

Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all [is] vanity.

۹ 9 و دیگر چونکه جامعه حکیم بود باز هم معرفت را به قوم تعلیم می‌داد و تفکر نموده، غوررسی می‌کرد و مثل های بسیار تالیف نمود.

And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs.

۱۰ 10 جامعه تفحص نمود تا سخنان مقبول را پیداکند و کلمات راستی را که به استقامت مکتوب باشد.

The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and [that which was] written [was] upright, [even] words of truth.

۱۱ 11 سخنان حکیمان مثل سکهای گاورانی است و کلمات ارباب جماعت مانند میخهای محکم شده می‌باشد، که از یک شبان داده شود.

The words of the wise [are] as goads, and as nails fastened [by] the masters of assemblies, [which] are given from one shepherd.

۱۲ 12 و علاوه بر اینها، ای پسر من پند بگیر. ساختن کتابهای بسیار انتها ندارد و مطالعه زیاد، تعب بدن است.

And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books [there is] no end; and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh.

۱۳ 13 پس ختم تمام امر را بشنویم. از خدابترس و اوامر او را نگاه دار چونکه تمامی تکلیف انسان این است.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.

۱۴ 14 زیرا خدا هر عمل را با هر کارمخفی خواه نیکو و خواه بد باشد، به محاکمه خواهد آورد.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether [it be] good, or whether [it be] evil.
