The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
| باطل اباطیل، جامعه می‌گوید، باطل اباطیل، همه‌چیز باطل است. | ۲ 2 |
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.
| انسان را ازتمامی مشقتش که زیر آسمان می‌کشد چه منفعت است؟ | ۳ 3 |
What profit hath man of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sun?
| یک طبقه می‌روند و طبقه دیگرمی آیند و زمین تا به ابد پایدار می‌ماند. | ۴ 4 |
[One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh, but the earth standeth for ever.
| آفتاب طلوع می‌کند و آفتاب غروب می‌کند وبه‌جایی که از آن طلوع نمود می‌شتابد. | ۵ 5 |
The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.
| بادبطرف جنوب می‌رود و بطرف شمال دور می‌زند؛ دورزنان دورزنان می‌رود و باد به مدارهای خود برمی گردد. | ۶ 6 |
The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about towards the north: it turneth about continually, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.
| جمیع نهرها به دریاجاری می‌شود اما دریا پر نمی گردد؛ به مکانی که نهرها از آن جاری شد به همان جا بازبرمی گردد. | ۷ 7 |
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.
| همه‌چیزها پر از خستگی است که انسان آن را بیان نتواند کرد. چشم از دیدن سیر نمی شود و گوش از شنیدن مملونمی گردد. | ۸ 8 |
All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
| آنچه بوده است همان است که خواهد بود، و آنچه شده است همان است که خواهد شد و زیر آفتاب هیچ‌چیز تازه نیست. | ۹ 9 |
That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which will be done: and there is nothing new under the sun.
| آیا چیزی هست که درباره‌اش گفته شود: ببین این تازه است. در دهرهایی که قبل از مابود آن چیز قدیم بود. | ۱۰ 10 |
Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already in the ages which were before us.
| ذکری از پیشینیان نیست، و از آیندگان نیز که خواهند آمد، نزدآنانی که بعد از ایشان خواهند آمد، ذکری نخواهد بود. | ۱۱ 11 |
There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall live afterwards.
| من که جامعه هستم بر اسرائیل در اورشلیم پادشاه بودم، | ۱۲ 12 |
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
| و دل خود را بر آن نهادم که در هرچیزی که زیر آسمان کرده می‌شود، با حکمت تفحص و تجسس نمایم. این مشقت سخت است که خدا به بنی آدم داده است که به آن زحمت بکشند. | ۱۳ 13 |
And I applied my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this grievous occupation hath God given to the children of men to weary themselves therewith.
| و تمامی کارهایی را که زیر آسمان کرده می‌شود، دیدم که اینک همه آنها بطالت و درپی باد زحمت کشیدن است. | ۱۴ 14 |
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.
| کج را راست نتوان کرد و ناقص را بشمار نتوان آورد. | ۱۵ 15 |
That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
| در دل خود تفکر نموده، گفتم: اینک من حکمت را به غایت افزودم، بیشتر از همگانی که قبل از من براورشلیم بودند؛ و دل من حکمت و معرفت رابسیار دریافت نمود؛ | ۱۶ 16 |
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have acquired wisdom more than all they that have been before me over Jerusalem; and my heart hath seen much of wisdom and knowledge.
| و دل خود را بر دانستن حکمت و دانستن حماقت و جهالت مشغول ساختم. پس فهمیدم که این نیز درپی باد زحمت کشیدن است. | ۱۷ 17 |
And I applied my heart to the knowledge of wisdom, and to the knowledge of madness and folly: I perceived that this also is a striving after the wind.
| زیرا که در کثرت حکمت کثرت غم است و هر‌که علم را بیفزاید، حزن رامی افزاید. | ۱۸ 18 |
For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
