ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਕ 2
1 ੧ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਿਆ ਭਈ ਆ, ਮੈਂ ਅਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਤਾਵਾ ਲਵਾਂਗਾ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸੁੱਖ ਭੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਖੋ, ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਸੀ।
I said in my heart, Come now, I will test thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
3 ੩ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਧ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ ਕਰਾਂ, ਪਰ ਫੇਰ ਵੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਬੁੱਧ ਵੱਲ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਖਤਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਾਂ, ਜਦ ਤੱਕ ਇਹ ਨਾ ਵੇਖਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਚੰਗਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਦਮ ਵੰਸ਼ੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਕਰਨ।
I sought in my heart to give myself to wine, yet acquainting my heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I made for myself great works; I built houses; I planted vineyards:
I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
I made me pools of water, to water with them the wood that bringeth forth trees:
7 ੭ ਮੈਂ ਦਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਸੀਆਂ ਮੁੱਲ ਲਏ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੰਮੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਾਸ ਵੀ ਸਨ, ਸਗੋਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਵੱਗਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਜੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਾਇਦਾਦ ਸੀ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ।
I procured me male and female servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
8 ੮ ਮੈਂ ਸੋਨਾ-ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਬਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਈ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕੀਤੇ। ਮੈਂ ਗਾਇਕ ਅਤੇ ਗਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮਨਮੋਹਣੀਆਂ ਰਖ਼ੈਲਾਂ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਦਮ ਵੰਸ਼ੀ ਸੁੱਖ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the special treasure of kings and of the provinces: I procured me male and female singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and of all sorts.
9 ੯ ਮੈਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਾਧਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਰ ਫੇਰ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੁੱਧ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹੀ।
So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10 ੧੦ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੰਗਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੋਕਿਆ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹੋ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਸੀ।
And whatever my eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11 ੧੧ ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਖੋ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
12 ੧੨ ਫੇਰ ਮੈਂ ਬੁੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਗਲਪੁਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਖਤਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਮੂੰਹ ਮੋੜਿਆ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਵੇਗਾ, ਕੀ ਕਰੇਗਾ? ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ।
And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
14 ੧੪ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਸਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਕਿ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੀ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ।
The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
15 ੧੫ ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਿਆ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮੂਰਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਵੀ ਬੀਤੇਗੀ, ਤਾਂ ਫੇਰ ਮੈਂ ਵੱਧ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਿਆ? ਸੋ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
16 ੧੬ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਸਦਾ ਤੱਕ ਰਹੇਗੀ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ? ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ!
For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.
17 ੧੭ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਕ ਗਿਆ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਜੋ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾੜਾ ਲੱਗਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਫੱਕਣਾ ਹੈ।
Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous to me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18 ੧੮ ਸਗੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਕ ਗਿਆ, ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਵੇਗਾ।
Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it to the man that shall be after me.
19 ੧੯ ਕੌਣ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ? ਫੇਰ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਦਾ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੁੱਧ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹੋ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣੇਗਾ! ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour in which I have laboured, and in which I have showed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
21 ੨੧ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਬੁੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਫ਼ਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਹੋਵੇ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured in it shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22 ੨੨ ਭਲਾ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ-ਧੰਦੇ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਨੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਤੋਂ ਕੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?
For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, in which he hath laboured under the sun?
23 ੨੩ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਿਨ ਦੁੱਖ ਭਰੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਸੋਗ ਹੈ, ਸਗੋਂ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਤੀਂ ਵੀ ਅਰਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਹੈ!
For all his days are sorrows, and his labour grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24 ੨੪ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਖਾਵੇ-ਪੀਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ-ਧੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਚਾਵੇ। ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
For who can eat, or who else can hasten to it, more than I?
26 ੨੬ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ, ਬੁੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਪਾਪੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਵੇ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਫੱਕਣਾ ਹੈ!
For God giveth to a man who is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth toil, to gather and to store up wealth, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
