ਰਸੂਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਤੱਬ 22
Brethren and fathers, hear my defence, which I now make to you.
2 ੨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਇਬਰਾਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਤਦ ਉਹ ਬੋਲਿਆ,
And on hearing him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue, they kept the more silence. And he saith:
3 ੩ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕਿਲਕਿਯਾ ਤੇ ਤਰਸੁਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੰਮਿਆ, ਪਰ ਇਸੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਮਲੀਏਲ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਉ-ਦਾਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਭ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਅਣਖੀ ਹੋ, ਮੈਂ ਵੀ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਅਣਖੀ ਸੀ।
I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, hut brought up in this city, taught at the feet of Gamaliel in the strictness of the Law of our fathers, being zealous for God, as ye all are this day.
4 ੪ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਅਤੇ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ-ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਆ ਕੇ, ਇਸ ਪੰਥ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਤੱਕ ਸਤਾਇਆ।
And I persecuted this way [[of belief]] even to death, binding and putting into prisons both men and women,
5 ੫ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਅਤੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਚਿੱਠੀਆਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਦੰਮਿਸ਼ਕ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਸਨ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਬੰਨ ਕੇ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਵਾਂ।
as also the high-priest beareth me witness, and all the elderhood; from whom I received letters to the brethren, and was on my way to Damascus to bring those also that were there, bound, to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.
6 ੬ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਰਦੇ-ਤੁਰਦੇ ਦੰਮਿਸ਼ਕ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਚੁਫ਼ੇਰੇ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਜੋਤ ਚਮਕੀ।
But it came to pass, as I was on my way, and approaching Damascus, that about noon there suddenly shone around me a great light from heaven;
7 ੭ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣੀ ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸੌਲੁਸ ਹੇ ਸੌਲੁਸ, ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਸਤਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
and I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute me?
8 ੮ ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੌਣ ਹੋ? ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, ਮੈਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨਾਸਰੀ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਤਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom thou persecutest.
And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but the voice of him that spoke to me they did not hear.
10 ੧੦ ਫੇਰ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਕਰਾਂ? ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, ਤੂੰ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਦੰਮਿਸ਼ਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਠਹਿਰਾਈਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਸੋ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦੱਸੀਆਂ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ।
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there thou wilt be told of all which it hath been appointed thee to do.
And as I could not see by reason of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand of those that were with me, and came into Damascus.
12 ੧੨ ਅਤੇ ਹਨਾਨਿਯਾਹ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਭਗਤ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਨੇਕਨਾਮ ਸੀ।
But one Ananias, a devout man according to the Law, well spoken of by all the Jews who dwelt there,
13 ੧੩ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੋਲ ਖੜੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, ਭਾਈ ਸੌਲੁਸ ਫੇਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਜਾ, ਅਤੇ ਓਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ।
came to me, and standing over me said, Brother Saul, receive sight. And I immediately looked up upon him.
14 ੧੪ ਉਹ ਬੋਲਿਆ, ਸਾਡੇ ਵੱਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਉਹ ਦੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣੇ, ਉਸ ਧਰਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖੇਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣੇਂ।
And he said, The God of our fathers chose thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth;
15 ੧੫ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਸੇ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਵਾਹ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ, ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਤੂੰ ਵੇਖੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਣੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
for thou shalt be a witness for him to all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
And now why dost thou delay? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.
17 ੧੭ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਹੈਕਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੈਂ ਬੇਸੁਧ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
And it came to pass after my return to Jerusalem, while I was praying in the temple, that I fell into a trance,
18 ੧੮ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਛੇਤੀ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਤੋਂ ਜਲਦੀ ਨਿੱਕਲ ਜਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੱਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਨਾ ਮੰਨਣਗੇ।
and saw him saying to me, Make haste, and go quickly out of Jerusalem; for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 ੧੯ ਮੈਂ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਸੀ।
And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned, and beat in every synagogue, those that believed in thee;
20 ੨੦ ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਇਸਤੀਫ਼ਾਨ ਦਾ ਖੂਨ ਵਹਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੀ ਕੋਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਖਵਾਲੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ।”
and when the blood of Stephen, thy witness, was shed, I myself was standing by and consenting, and keeping the garments of those who slew him.
And he said to me, Depart; for I will send thee far hence to the gentiles.
22 ੨੨ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਤੱਕ ਉਹ ਦੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਤਾਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਨਾਲ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਕਿ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਓ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਦਾ ਜੀਉਣਾ ਹੀ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ!
And they listened to him as far as this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth! for it was not fit that he should live.
And as they were crying out, and shaking their garments, and throwing dust into the air,
24 ੨੪ ਤਾਂ ਫੌਜ ਦੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਕੋਰੜੇ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ-ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕਰੋ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗੇ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਰੌਲ਼ਾ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
the chief captain ordered him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might ascertain for what cause they were thus crying out against him.
25 ੨੫ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਤਸਮਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਨਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਪੌਲੁਸ ਨੇ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੋਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ ਆਖਿਆ, ਕੀ ਇਹ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਰੋਮੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ ਸਾਬਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਰੜੇ ਮਾਰੋ?
But when they had stretched him out with the cords, Paul said to the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 ੨੬ ਜਦੋਂ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਕੀ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋ? ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਾਂ ਰੋਮੀ ਹੈ!
When the centurion heard this, he went and told the chief captain, saying, What art thou about to do? For this man is a Roman.
Then the chief captain came and said to him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yes.
28 ੨੮ ਤਾਂ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਆਖਿਆ, ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪੈਸਾ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਕੇ ਰੋਮੀ ਨਾਗਰਿਕਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਪੌਲੁਸ ਬੋਲਿਆ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਜੰਮਿਆ।
The chief captain answered, For a great sum I obtained this citizenship. And Paul said, But I was born a Roman.
29 ੨੯ ਉਪਰੰਤ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਹ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ-ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ ਸਨ ਉਹ ਝੱਟ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਹੱਟ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਰੋਮੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ, ਡਰ ਗਿਆ।
They therefore who were about to examine him left him immediately. And the chief captain also was alarmed when he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 ੩੦ ਅਗਲੇ ਦਿਨ, ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕਿ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਹਾਂ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਫੇਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੌਲੁਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਉਤਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
On the morrow, wishing to have certain knowledge why he was accused by the Jews, he released him, and ordered the chief priests and all the council to assemble; and bringing Paul down, he set him before them.
