1 Ilmi ogeessi gorsa abbaa isaa dhagaʼa; qoostuun namaa immoo dheekkamsa hin dhaggeeffatu.
A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a mocker doesn't listen to correction.
2 Namni waan afaan isaatii baʼuun waan gaariin gammada; namni hin amanamne garuu jeequmsaaf ariifata.
You'll be rewarded for saying good things, but dishonest people want violence.
3 Namni arraba isaa eeggatu, jireenya isaa eeggata; kan of eeggachuu malee dubbatu immoo baduuf ariifata.
Watch what you say and save your life—saying too much leads to disaster.
4 Fedhiin dhibaaʼaa yoom iyyuu hin guutamu; fedhiin nama jabaatee hojjetuu immoo guutumaan ni milkaaʼa.
Lazy people want a lot, but get nothing; if you work hard you'll be well rewarded.
5 Namni qajeelaan soba jibba; namni hamaan garuu qaanii fi salphina fida.
Good people hate lies, but the wicked cause a stink and bring disgrace.
6 Qajeelummaatu nama tolaa tiksa; hamminni garuu cubbamaa galaafata.
Goodness protects those who live right, but sin overcomes the wicked.
7 Namni tokko sooressa of fakkeessa; garuu homaa hin qabu; tokko immoo hiyyeessa of fakkeessa; garuu qabeenya guddaa qaba.
Some pretend to be rich, but don't have anything, while others pretend to be poor and are very rich.
8 Soorumni nama tokkoo furii jireenya isaa taʼuu dandaʼa; hiyyeessi garuu ifannaa hin dhagaʼu.
The rich can pay a ransom to save their lives, but the poor aren't troubled in this way.
9 Ifni nama qajeelaa akka gaarii ifa; ibsaan nama hamaa garuu ni dhaama.
The life of good people shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
10 Of tuulummaan lola qofa baayʼisa; ogummaan garuu warra gorsa dhagaʼan biratti argamti.
Pride only causes conflict; but those who take advice are wise.
11 Maallaqni karaa sobaatiin dhufu dafee bada; namni xinnoo xinnoon maallaqa walitti qabatu garuu ni kuufata.
Wealth gained by fraud quickly disappears, but those who gather bit by bit prosper.
12 Abdiin lafa irra harkifatu garaa nama dhukkubsa; hawwiin guutamu garuu muka jireenyaa ti.
Hope that's delayed makes you feel sick, but a wish that comes true revives you.
13 Namni gorsa tuffatu badiisa ofitti fida; kan ajaja ulfeessu immoo badhaasa argata.
If you despise words of advice, you'll pay for it; but if you respect what you're told, you'll be rewarded.
14 Barsiisni nama ogeessaa burqaa jireenyaa ti; kiyyoo duʼaa irraas nama deebisa.
The teaching of the wise is like a fountain of life, so you can avoid the snares of death.
15 Hubannaan gaariin surraa argamsiisa; karaan warra hin amanamnee garuu badiisatti isaan geessa.
Good sense earns appreciation, but the way of the unfaithful is hard.
16 Namni qalbii qabu kam iyyuu beekumsaan hojjeta; gowwaan immoo gowwummaa isaa mulʼisa.
All wise people act intelligently, but stupid people demonstrate their stupidity.
17 Ergamaan hamaan rakkoo keessa seena; ergamaan amanamaan garuu fayyina fida.
A bad messenger creates trouble, but a faithful representative brings healing.
18 Namni adabamuu jibbu ni hiyyooma; ni qaanaʼas; kan sirreeffama kabaju immoo ulfina argata.
Poverty and disgrace come to those who ignore instruction, but those who accept correction are honored.
19 Hawwiin guutame namatti miʼaawa; gowwoonni garuu waan hamaa irraa deebiʼuu balfu.
It's nice to see a wish come true, but stupid people hate to turn away from evil to achieve this.
20 Namni nama ogeessa wajjin deemu ogeessa taʼa, michuun gowwootaa garuu ni miidhama.
Being friends with wise people will make you wise, but being friends with stupid people will only cause you problems.
21 Wanni hamaan cubbamoota ariʼata; badhaadhummaan immoo badhaasa qajeelotaa ti.
Tragedy chases after the sinner, but prosperity rewards the good.
22 Namni gaariin ilmaan ilmaan isaatiif dhaala dabarsa; qabeenyi nama cubbamaa garuu qajeeltotaaf kuufama.
Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner's wealth is saved for those who live right.
23 Qonnaan hiyyeessaa midhaan guddaa baasa; murtiin jalʼaan garuu haxaaʼee duraa balleessa.
The unploughed ground of the poor could produce a lot of food, but it's stolen through injustice.
24 Namni harcummee qusatu ilma isaa jibba; kan ilma ofii jaallatu immoo ilaallachaa isa adaba.
People who don't discipline their children hate them. Those who love their children carefully discipline them.
25 Namni qajeelaan hamma quufutti nyaata; garaan nama hamaa garuu ni beelaʼa.
The good eat until they're full; but the belly of the wicked is empty.
