1 Ganama barii luboonni hangafoonni, maanguddoota, barsiistota seeraatii fi guutummaa yaaʼii Yihuudootaa wajjin mariʼatanii Yesuusin hidhanii, geessanii Phiilaaxoositti dabarsanii kennan.
Early the next morning, the chief priest, elders, and religious teachers—the whole governing council—came to a decision. They had Jesus bound and sent him to be handed over to Pilate.
2 Phiilaaxoosis, “Ati mootii Yihuudootaatii?” jedhee isa gaafate. Yesuus immoo, “Atuu jette kaa!” jedhee deebise.
Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” “You said it,” Jesus replied.
3 Luboonni hangafoonni waan baayʼeedhaan isa himatan.
The chief priests kept on making many accusations against him.
4 Phiilaaxoos amma illee, “Ati deebii hin kennituu? Isaan waan meeqaan akka si himatan mee ilaali” jedhee isa gaafate.
Pilate questioned him again, “Aren't you going to answer? See how many charges they're bringing against you!”
5 Yesuus garuu amma illee deebii tokko iyyuu hin kennine; Phiilaaxoosis ni dinqisiifate.
But Jesus didn't give any more answers, much to Pilate's surprise.
6 Innis nama hidhame kan sabni gaafate tokko Guyyaa Ayyaanaa hunda gad dhiisa ture.
Now it was Pilate's custom at the Passover feast to release a prisoner to the people, whoever they requested.
7 Namichi Barabbaas jedhamu tokko finciltoota goolii kaasanii nama ajjeesan wajjin mana hidhaa keessa ture.
One of the prisoners was a man called Barabbas who belonged to a group of rebels who had committed murder during an uprising.
8 Uummanni sunis Phiilaaxoos bira dhaqee akka inni waan duraan gochaafii ture sana isaanii godhu isa kadhate.
The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner following his usual custom.
9 Phiilaaxoos garuu, “Akka ani mootii Yihuudootaa gad isinii dhiisu barbaadduu?” jedhee gaafate;
“Do you want me to release to you the King of Jews?” he asked them,
10 inni akka luboonni hangafoonni hinaaffaadhaan Yesuusin dabarsanii isatti kennan ni beeka tureetii.
for he realized that it was because of their jealousy of Jesus that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
11 Luboonni hangafoonni garuu akka Phiilaaxoos qooda Yesuus Barabbaasin gad dhiisu akka isa kadhataniif namoota kakaasan.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
12 Phiilaaxoosis, “Yoos namicha isin mootii Yihuudootaa jettaniin kana maal godhu ree?” jedhee amma illee isaan gaafate.
“Then what should I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?” he asked them.
13 Isaan amma illee, “Isa fannisi!” jedhanii iyyan.
“Crucify him!” they shouted back.
14 Phiilaaxoos immoo, “Maaliif? Inni yakka maalii hojjete?” jedhee gaafate. Isaan garuu ittuma caalchisanii, “Isa fannisi!” jedhanii iyyan.
“Why? What crime has he committed?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they shouted back even louder.
15 Kanaafuu Phiilaaxoos namoota gammachiisuuf jedhee Barabbaasin gad isaaniif dhiise. Yesuusin garuu garafsiisee akka inni fannifamuuf dabarsee kenne.
Wanting to please the mob, Pilate released Barabbas to them. First he had Jesus flogged and then handed him over to be crucified.
16 Ergasii loltoonni Yesuusin mana bulchaatti, jechuunis Piraayitooriyoonitti ol galchan; raayyaa loltootaa hundas walitti waaman.
The soldiers took him away into the Praetorium courtyard, where they called out the whole cohort.
17 Uffata dhiilgee itti uffisan; gonfoo qoraattiis micciiranii dhaʼanii isa irra kaaʼan.
They put royal purple robes on him and made a crown of thorns that they placed on him.
18 Isaanis, “Akkam ree, yaa mootii Yihuudootaa!” jedhanii nagaa isa gaafachuu jalqaban.
Then they saluted him, saying, “Hail King of the Jews!”
19 Uleedhaanis mataa isaa rukutan; isattis tufan. Jilbeenfataniis sagadaniif.
They repeatedly beat him around the head with a rod, spat at him, and fell on their knees before him as if in worship.
20 Erga itti qoosanii booddee uffata diimaa dhiilgee sana irraa baasanii wayyaa isaa deebisanii isatti uffisan. Fannisuufis isa fuudhanii deeman.
After they finished mocking him, they took off the purple robes, and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to be crucified.
21 Isaanis namicha Qareenaa kan Simoon jedhamu tokko utuu inni baadiyyaadhaa dhufee achiin darbaa jiruu arganii akka inni fannoo Yesuus baatuuf isa dirqisiisan. Namichi kunis abbaa Iskindiroosii fi Ruufoosii ti.
They forced a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the countryside, to carry his cross. Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.
22 Isaanis iddoo Golgootaa jedhamutti Yesuusin geessan; Golgootaa jechuun “Iddoo buqqee mataa” jechuu dha.
They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which means “the Place of the Skull.”
23 Jarris akka inni daadhii wayinii kan qumbiin walitti makame dhuguuf kennaniif; inni garuu fudhachuu dide.
They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.
24 Isaanis isa fannisan. Uffata isaas gargar qoodatanii tokkoon tokkoon namaa maal akka argatu murteessuuf ixaa buufatan.
Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes, and threw dice to decide who would have what.
25 Yeroon isaan itti isa fannisanis ganama saʼaatii sadii ture.
It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
26 Katabbiin waan inni ittiin himatamee kan, Mooticha Yihuudootaa, jedhu mataa isaatiin ol ture.
A sign with the written charge against him read: “The King of the Jews.”
27 Hattoota lamas, isa tokko mirga isaatiin, kaan immoo bitaa isaatiin isa wajjin fannisan. [
They crucified two criminals with him, one on his left and one on his right.
28 Kanaanis dubbiin kitaabni, “Inni akka seera cabsitootaatti lakkaaʼame” jedhu sun ni raawwatame.]
29 Warri achiin darbanis isa arrabsan; mataa isaaniis raasanii, “Muu! Ati kan mana qulqullummaa diigdee guyyaa sadiitti ijaartu,
People passing by shouted insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying. “Aha! You who claimed you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days;
30 mee fannoo irraa gad buʼiitii of oolchi!” jedhan.
save yourself and come down from the cross!”
31 Akkasumas luboonni hangafoonnii fi barsiistonni seeraa wajjin itti qoosan. Akkanas jedhan; “Inni warra kaan oolcheera; ofii isaa garuu oolchuu hin dandaʼu!
Likewise the chief priests and the religious teachers made fun of him, saying to each other, “He saved others, but he can't save himself.
32 Akka nu arginee amannuuf Kiristoos mootichi Israaʼel kun mee amma fannoo irraa gad haa buʼu.” Warri isa wajjin fannifamanis isa arrabsan.
If he really is the Messiah, the King of Israel, then why doesn't he come down from the cross so we can see and believe!” Even those who were crucified with him insulted him.
33 Saʼaatii jaʼaa jalqabee, hamma saʼaatii sagaliitti dukkanni lafa hunda irra buʼe.
At noon darkness fell over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
34 Saʼaatii sagalittis Yesuus sagalee guddaadhaan, “Eloohee! Eloohee! Laamaa Sabaqtaanii?” jedhee iyye. Hiikkaan isaas, “Yaa Waaqa ko! Yaa Waaqa ko! Ati maaliif na dhiifte?” jechuu dha.
At three o'clock Jesus cried out, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani,” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
35 Warra achi dhadhaabatan keessaa tokko tokko yommuu waan kana dhagaʼanitti, “Ilaa, inni Eeliyaasin waamaa” jedhan.
Some of those standing there heard this, and said, “He's calling for Elijah.”
36 Namichi tokkos fiigee, ispoonjii dhangaggaaʼaadhaan guutee, uleetti kaaʼe; akka inni dhuguufis Yesuusiif kennee, “Mee isa dhiisaa. Akka Eeliyaas dhufee gad isa buusu arginaatii” jedhe.
One man ran and filled a sponge with vinegar, put it on a stick, and tried to give it to Jesus to drink. “Leave him alone,” he said. “Let's see if Elijah will come to take him down.”
37 Yesuusis sagalee guddaadhaan iyyee hafuura dhumaa baafate.
Then Jesus groaned loudly, and died.
38 Golgaan mana qulqullummaas olii hamma gadiitti iddoo lamatti tarsaʼe.
The Temple veil was ripped in two from top to bottom.
39 Ajajaan dhibbaa kan fuula Yesuus dura dhaabachaa tures yommuu iyyuu Yesuus dhagaʼee akka inni itti hafuura dhumaa baafate argetti, “Dhugumaanuu namichi kun Ilma Waaqaa ture!” jedhe.
When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how he died, he said, “This man was truly the Son of God.”
40 Dubartoonni tokko tokkos fagoodhaa ilaalaa turan. Isaan keessaas Maariyaam ishee Magdalaa, Maariyaam haadha Yaaqoob isa quxisuutii fi Yoosaa akkasumas Saloomee turan.
Some women were watching from a distance including Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and Joses, and Salome.
41 Isaanis yeroo inni Galiilaa turetti isa duukaa buʼanii isa tajaajilaa turan. Dubartoonni isa wajjin Yerusaalemitti ol baʼan baayʼeen kaanis achi turan.
They had followed Jesus and had taken care of him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there.
42 Guyyaan sun Guyyaa Qophii jechuunis guyyaa Sanbataan duraa ture. Yommuu galgalaaʼettis,
It was Friday, the day before the Sabbath. When evening came,
43 Yoosef namni Armaatiyaa, miseensi yaaʼii beekamaan kan mataan isaa mootummaa Waaqaa eeggachaa ture tokko ija jabinaan gara Phiilaaxoos dhaqee reeffa Yesuus kadhate.
Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the governing council who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, had the courage to go to Pilate and ask for Jesus' body.
44 Phiilaaxoosis yommuu akka inni duʼe dhagaʼetti ni dinqifate. Ajajaa dhibbaa sanas ofitti waamee Yesuus erga duʼee turuu fi turuu baachuu isaa gaafate.
Pilate was surprised that Jesus had died so soon, so he summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died.
45 Akka inni duʼes ajajaa dhibbaa sana irraa erga mirkaneeffatee booddee reeffa sana Yoosefiif kenne.
Once he had confirmation from the centurion, Pilate gave permission for Joseph to take the body.
46 Yoosefis huccuu quncee talbaa irraa hojjetame bitee, reeffa sana gad buusee, huccuu sanaan kafanee awwaala garaa kattaa keessatti qotate keessa kaaʼe. Dhagaa tokkos balbala awwaala sanaatti gangalchee cufe.
Joseph bought a linen sheet. Then he took Jesus' body down from the cross and wrapped it in the sheet, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of rock. Then he rolled a heavy stone up against the entrance.
47 Maariyaam isheen Magdalaatii fi Maariyaam haati Yoosaa lafa inni kaaʼame ni argan.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.
