1 Egaa Faasiikaa fi Ayyaana Maxinootiif guyyaa lama qofatu hafe; luboonni hangafoonnii fi barsiistonni seeraa haxxummaadhaan Yesuusin qabanii ajjeesuuf mariʼachaa turan.
It was now two days before the Festival of the Passover and the unleavened bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking for an opportunity to arrest Jesus by stealth, and to put him to death;
2 Isaanis, “Garuu akka namoonni goolii hin kaafneef yeroo ayyaanaatti hin taʼin” jedhan.
for they said, “Not during the Festival, or the people may riot.”
3 Utuu inni Biitaaniyaa keessa mana Simoon isa lamxaaʼaa sanaatti maaddiitti dhiʼaatee jiruu, dubartiin tokko shittoo gatiin isaa guddaa taʼe kan naardoos qulqulluu irraa qopheeffame bilqaaxxii albaasxiroositti qabattee dhufte. Isheenis bilqaaxxicha cabsitee shittoo sana mataa isaatti dhangalaafte.
When Jesus was still at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, while he was sitting at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of choice spikenard perfume of great value. She broke the jar, and poured the perfume on his head.
4 Namoota achi turan keessaa tokko tokko aaranii akkana waliin jedhan; “Shittoo kana balleessuun maaliif?
Some of those who were present said to one another indignantly, “Why has the perfume been wasted like this?
5 Silaa shittoon kun diinaarii dhibba sadii olitti gurguramee maallaqa isaa hiyyeeyyiif kennuun ni dandaʼama tureetii.” Isaanis isheetti dheekkaman.
This perfume could have been sold for more than a year’s wages, and the money given to the poor.”
6 Yesuus garuu akkana jedhe; “Ishee dhiisaa. Maaliif ishee rakkiftu? Isheen waan gaarii naaf gooteerti.
“Leave her alone,” said Jesus, as they began to find fault with her, “why are you troubling her? This is a beautiful deed that she has done for me.
7 Hiyyeeyyii yeroo hunda of biraa qabdu; isin yeroo feetan kamitti iyyuu isaan gargaaruu ni dandeessu. Ana garuu yeroo hunda of biraa hin qabdan.
You always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you will not always have me.
8 Isheen waan dandeessu hojjette. Isheen duraan dursitee dhagna koo awwaalaaf dibde.
She has done what she could; she has perfumed my body beforehand for my burial.
9 Ani dhuguma isinittin hima; addunyaa hunda irratti, iddoo wangeelli itti lallabamu kamitti iyyuu wanni isheen gootes yaadannoo isheetiif ni odeeffama.”
And I tell you, wherever, in the whole world, the good news is proclaimed, what this woman has done will be told in memory of her.”
10 Ergasiis warra Kudha Lamaan keessaa tokko, Yihuudaa Keeriyotichi, Yesuusin dabarsee isaanitti kennuuf jedhee gara luboota hangafootaa dhaqe.
After this, Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests, to betray Jesus to them.
11 Isaanis yommuu waan kana dhagaʼanitti gammadanii, maallaqa isaaf kennuuf waadaa galan. Kanaafuu Yihuudaan dabarsee isa kennuuf haala mijaaʼaa eeggachaa ture.
They were glad to hear what he said, and promised to pay him. So he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.
12 Guyyaa jalqaba Ayyaana Maxinoo, yeroo itti hoolaan Faasiikaa qalamutti barattoonni Yesuus, “Akka ati Faasiikaa nyaattuuf nu eessa dhaqnee akka siif qopheessinu barbaadda?” jedhanii isa gaafatan.
On the first day of the Festival of the unleavened bread, when it was customary to kill the Passover lambs, his disciples said to Jesus, “Where do you wish us to go and make preparations for your eating the Passover?”
13 Innis barattoota isaa keessaa nama lama erge; akkanas isaaniin jedhe; “Magaalaa seenaa; namichi okkotee bishaanii baatu tokko isinitti dhufa; isa duukaa buʼaa.
Jesus sent forward two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and there a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him;
14 Abbaa mana namichi sun seenuutiinis, ‘Barsiisaan, manni keessumaa ko, iddoon ani itti barattoota koo wajjin Faasiikaa nyaadhu eessa? jedhee gaafata’ jedhaa.
and, wherever he goes in, say to the owner of the house ‘The teacher says – Where is my room where I am to eat the Passover with my disciples?’
15 Abbaan manaa sunis darbii balʼaa miidhagfamee qopheeffame tokko isinitti argisiisa. Isinis achitti nuuf qopheessaa.”
He will himself show you a large upstairs room, set out ready; and there make preparations for us.”
16 Barattoonnis kaʼanii magaalaa sana seenanii akkuma Yesuus isaanitti hime sanatti argatan. Faasiikaas ni qopheessan.
So the disciples set out and went into the city, and found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
17 Yesuusis yommuu galgalaaʼetti warra Kudha Lamaan wajjin achi gaʼe.
In the evening he went there with the Twelve,
18 Utuu isaan maaddiitti dhiʼaatanii jiranuu Yesuus, “Ani dhuguma isinitti nan hima; isin keessaa tokko, kan amma na wajjin nyaachuutti jiru dabarsee na kenna” jedheen.
and when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, “I tell you that one of you is going to betray me – one who is eating with me.”
19 Isaanis gaddanii, tokko tokkoon, “Na taʼinnaa laata?” jechuu jalqaban.
They were grieved at this, and began to say to him, one after another, “Can it be I?”
20 Innis akkana jedhee deebise; “Namichi sun warra kudha Lamaan keessaa tokkoo dha. Innis isa na wajjin gabatee keessaa cuuphatuu dha.
“It is one of you Twelve,” said Jesus, “the one who is dipping his bread beside me into the dish.
21 Ilmi Namaa akkuma waaʼeen isaa barreeffame sanatti ni deema. Garuu namicha dabarsee Ilma Namaa kennu sanaaf wayyoo! Inni utuu dhalachuu baatee isaaf wayya ture.”
True, the Son of Man must go, as scripture says of him, yet alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is being betrayed! For that man it would be better never to have been born!”
22 Utuu nyaachaa jiranuus Yesuus buddeena fuudhee eebbise; caccabsees, “Fudhadhaa; kun foon koo ti” jedhee isaaniif kenne.
While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and, after saying the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Xoofoos fuudhee galata galchee isaaniif kenne; hundi isaaniis xoofoo sana irraa dhugan.
Then he took a cup, and, after saying the thanksgiving, gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 Innis akkana isaaniin jedhe; “Kun dhiiga ko, dhiiga kakuu haaraa kan namoota baayʼeef dhangalaafamuu dha.
“This is my covenant-blood,” he said, “which is poured out on behalf of many.
25 Ani dhuguma isinitti nan hima; ani hamman guyyaa sana mootummaa Waaqaa keessatti deebiʼee dhugutti ija wayinii kana irraa deebiʼee hin dhugu.”
I tell you that I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 Isaanis erga faarfannaa faarfatanii booddee Tulluu Ejersaatti qajeelan.
They then sang a hymn, and went out up the Mount of Olives,
27 Yesuus akkana isaaniin jedhe; “Hundi keessan ni gufattu; akkana jedhamee barreeffameeraatii: “‘Ani tiksee nan rukuta; hoolonnis ni bittinneeffamu.’
presently Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away; for scripture says – ‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 Ani garuu ergan duʼaa kaʼee booddee isin dura Galiilaa nan dhaqa.”
Yet, after I have risen, I will go before you into Galilee.”
29 Phexros garuu, “Yoo namni hundinuu gufate iyyuu ani hin gufadhu” jedheen.
“Even if everyone else falls away,” said Peter, “I will not.”
30 Yesuus immoo deebisee, “Ani dhuguma sitti nan hima; ati harʼa, edanuma utuu indaanqoon yeroo lama hin iyyin, yeroo sadii na ganta” jedheen.
“I tell you,” answered Jesus, “that you yourself today – yes, this very night – before the cock crows twice, will disown me three times.”
31 Phexros garuu, “Ani yoon si wajjin duʼuu qabaadhe illee gonkumaa si hin ganu” jedhee jabeessee dubbate. Hundi isaaniis akkasuma jedhan.
But Peter vehemently protested, “Even if I must die with you, I will never disown you!” And they all said the same.
32 Isaanis iddoo Geetesemaanee jedhamu tokko dhaqan; Yesuusis barattoota isaatiin, “Hamma ani kadhadhutti isin as taaʼaa” jedhe.
Presently they came to a garden known as Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples “Sit down here while I pray.”
33 Innis Phexrosin, Yaaqoobii fi Yohannisin of faana fudhatee, akka malee dhiphachuu fi yaaddaʼuus jalqabe.
He took with him Peter, James, and John; and began to show signs of great dismay and deep distress of mind.
34 Innis, “Lubbuun koo akka malee gadditee duʼuu geesseerti. Isin asuma turaatii dammaqaa” jedheen.
“I am sad at heart,” he said, “sad even to death; wait here, and watch.”
35 Innis xinnoo achi hiiqee lafatti gombifamee, yoo dandaʼame akka saʼaatiin sun isa irra darbituuf kadhate.
Going on a little further, he threw himself on the ground, and began to pray that, if it were possible, he might be spared that hour.
36 Innis, “Aabbaa, yaa Abbaa, wanni hundinuu siif ni dandaʼama. Xoofoo kana narraa fuudhi. Garuu akka fedhii keetii malee akka fedhii kootii hin taʼin” jedhe.
“Abba, Father,” he said, “all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me; yet, not what I will, but what you will.”
37 Innis gara barattoota isaatti deebiʼee utuu rafanuu isaan arge. Phexrosiinis akkana jedhe; “Simoon, ati amma illee inuma raftaa? Saʼaatii tokkittii illee dammaquu hin dandeenyee?
Then he came and found the three apostles asleep. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch for one hour?
38 Isin akka qorumsatti hin galleef dammaqaa kadhadhaa. Hafuurri qophaaʼaa dha; foon garuu dadhabaa dha.”
Watch and pray,” he said to them all, “so that you may not fall into temptation. True, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Ammas achi hiiqee waanuma duraan kadhate sana kadhate.
Again he went away, and prayed in the same words;
40 Inni yommuu deebiʼee dhufetti, ammas utuu rafanuu isaan arge; iji isaanii itti ulfaatee tureetii. Isaanis akka maal jedhanii deebisaniif hin beekne.
and coming back again he found them asleep, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say to him.
41 Yeroo sadaffaas deebiʼee akkana jedheen; “Isin amma iyyuu raftanii boqochaa jirtuu? Ni gaʼa! Saʼaatiin sun gaʼeera. Kunoo, Ilmi Namaa dabarfamee harka cubbamootaatti ni kennama.
A third time he came, and said to them, “Sleep on now, and rest yourselves. Enough! My time has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of wicked people.
42 Kaʼaa ni deemnaa! Kunoo, namichi dabarsee na kennu sun dhufaa jira.”
Up, and let us be going. Look! My betrayer is close at hand.”
43 Utuma inni dubbachaa jiruus, Yihuudaan namichi warra Kudha Lamaan keessaa tokko taʼe sun dhufe. Tuunni luboota hangafoota, barsiistota seeraatii fi maanguddoota biraa ergames goraadee fi bokkuu qabatee isa wajjin dhufe.
And just then, while he was still speaking, Judas, who was one of the Twelve, came up; and with him a crowd of people, with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders.
44 Inni dabarsee Yesuusin kennu sunis, “Namichi ani dhungadhu isa; isinis isa qabaatii eegaa isa fuudhaa deemaa” jedhee mallattoo kenneefii ture.
Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them. “The man whom I kiss,” he had said, “will be the one; arrest him and take him away safely.”
45 Yihuudaanis yommusuma Yesuusitti dhiʼaatee, “Yaa Barsiisaa!” jedhee isa dhungate.
As soon as Judas came, he went up to Jesus at once, and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46 Namoonni sun Yesuusin qabanii hidhan.
Then the men seized Jesus, and arrested him.
47 Warra achi dhadhaabachaa turan keessaa inni tokko garuu goraadee isaa luqqifatee garbicha luba ol aanaa dhaʼee gurra isaa irraa kute.
One of those who were standing by drew his sword, and struck at the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear.
48 Yesuusis akkana jedhe; “Isin goraadee fi bokkuu qabattanii akka nama hattuu qabuutti na qabuu dhuftanii?
But Jesus spoke up, and said to the men, “Have you come out, as if after a robber, with swords and clubs, to take me?
49 Ani guyyuma guyyaan mana qulqullummaa keessatti barsiisaa isin wajjin ture; isinis na hin qabne. Garuu Katabbiiwwan Qulqulluun raawwatamuu qabu.”
I have been among you day after day in the Temple Courts teaching, and yet you did not arrest me; but this is in fulfillment of the scriptures.”
50 Isaan hundinuus isa dhiisanii baqatan.
And all the apostles deserted him and fled.
51 Dargaggeessi tokkos uffata quncee talbaa irraa hojjetame tokko qullaa isaa irra buufatee Yesuus faana deemaa ture. Yeroo isa qabanittis,
One young man did indeed follow him, wrapped only in a linen sheet. They tried to arrest him;
52 dargaggeessi sun uffata isaa dhiisee, qullaa isaa harkaa baʼe.
but he left the sheet in their hands, and fled naked.
53 Isaanis Yesuusin luba ol aanaatti geessan; luboonni hangafoonni, maanguddoonnii fi barsiistonni seeraa hundinuu walitti qabaman.
Then they took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, elders, and the teachers of the Law assembled.
54 Phexrosis hamma dallaa luba ol aanaa keessaatti fagootti isa duukaa buʼe. Innis waardiyyoota wajjin ibidda bira taaʼee qaqqaammachaa ture.
Peter, who had followed Jesus at a distance into the courtyard of the high priest, was sitting there among the guards, warming himself at the blaze of the fire.
55 Luboonni hangafoonnii fi yaaʼiin guutuun Yesuusin ajjeesuuf jedhanii ragaa isatti barbaadaa turan; isaan garuu homaa hin arganne.
Meanwhile the chief priest and the whole of the High Council were trying to get such evidence against Jesus as would warrant his being put to death, but they could not find any;
56 Namoonni baayʼeen sobaan isatti dhugaa baʼan; dhuga baʼumsi isaanii garuu tokko hin taane.
for, though there were many who gave false evidence against him, yet their evidence did not agree.
57 Tokko tokko immoo kaʼanii akkana jedhaanii sobaan isatti dhugaa baʼan:
Presently some men stood up, and gave this false evidence against him –
58 “‘Mana qulqullummaa kan harka namaatiin ijaarame kana diigee kan biraa kan harka namaatiin hin ijaaramin guyyaa sadii keessatti deebisee nan ijaara’ jechuu isaa dhageenyeerra.”
“We ourselves heard him say ‘I will destroy this Temple made with hands, and in three days build another made without hands.’”
59 Haa taʼuu malee dhuga baʼumsi isaanii amma illee tokko hin taane.
Yet not even on that point did their evidence agree.
60 Lubichi ol aanaanis kaʼee fuula isaanii dura dhaabatee, “Ati deebii tokko illee hin kennituu? Wanni namoonni kunneen dhugaa sitti baʼan kun maali?” jedhee Yesuusin gaafate.
Then the high priest stood forward, and questioned Jesus. “Have you no answer to make?” he asked. “What is this evidence which these men are giving against you?”
61 Yesuus garuu inuma calʼise malee deebii tokko illee hin kennine. Lubichi ol aanaan ammas, “Kiristoos Ilmi isa Eebbifamaa Sanaa sii?” jedhee isa gaafate.
But Jesus remained silent, and made no answer. A second time the high priest questioned him. “Are you,” he asked, “the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 Yesuusis, “Eeyyee ana; isin utuu Ilmi Namaa karaa mirga Humna Qabeessa sanaatiin taaʼee, duumessa samiitiin dhufuu ni argitu” jedhe.
“I am,” replied Jesus, “and you will all see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the Almighty, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”
63 Lubichi ol aanaan uffata isaa tarsaasee akkana jedhe; “Kana caalaa dhuga baatota maalii nu barbaachisa?
At this the high priest tore his vestments. “Why do we want any more witnesses?” he exclaimed.
64 Waaqa arrabsuu isaa isini iyyuu dhageessaniirtu. Maal isinitti fakkaata?” Hundi isaaniis duʼatu isaaf mala jedhanii isatti muran.
“You heard his blasphemy? What is your verdict?” They all condemned him, declaring that he deserved death.
65 Namoonni tokko tokko isatti tufuu jalqaban; fuula isaas haguuganii abootteen isa rukutanii, “Mee raajii dubbadhu!” jedhan. Eegdonnis fuudhanii isa kakkabalan.
Some of those present began to spit at him, and to blindfold his eyes, and strike him, saying, as they did so, “Now play the prophet!” and even the guards received him with blows.
66 Utuu Phexros dallaa sana keessa gara gadii jiruu xomboreewwan luba ol aanaa keessaa tokko dhufte.
While Peter was in the courtyard down below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came up;
67 Isheen utuu Phexros ibidda qaqqaammatuu argite; hubattees isa ilaalte. Isheenis, “Atis Yesuus nama Naazreeti sana wajjin turte” jetteen.
and, seeing Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him, and exclaimed, “Why, you were with Jesus, the Nazarene!”
68 Inni garuu, “Ani waan ati jettu hin beeku; naaf hin galus” jedhee gane. Karra dallaatiinis gad baʼe; indaanqoonis ni iyye.
But Peter denied it. “I do not know or understand what you mean,” he replied. Then he went out into the porch;
69 Xomboreen sun ammas isa argitee warra achi dhadhaabataniin, “Namichi kun jara keessaa tokkoo dha” jette.
and there the maidservant, on seeing him, began to say again to the bystanders, “This is one of them!”
70 Inni garuu ammas ni gane. Yeroo xinnoo booddee immoo warri achi dhadhaabachaa turan Phexrosiin, “Atis nama Galiilaa waan taateef dhuguma iyyuu jara keessaa tokkoo dha!” jedhaniin.
But Peter again denied it. Soon afterward the bystanders again said to him, “You certainly are one of them; why you are a Galilean!”
71 Innis, “Ani namicha isin waaʼee isaa dubbattan kana hin beeku” jedhee of abaaruu fi kakachuu jalqabe.
But he said to them, “I swear that I do not know the man you are talking about! May God punish me if I am lying!”
72 Yommusuma indaanqoon lammata iyye. Phexrosis dubbii Yesuus, “Utuu indaanqoon yeroo lama hin iyyin, ati yeroo sadii na ganta” isaan jedhee ture sana yaadatee booʼe.
At that moment, for the second time, a cock crowed; and Peter remembered the words that Jesus had said to him – ‘Before a cock has crowed twice, you will disown me three times’; and, as he thought of it, he began to weep.
