1 Israaʼeloonni fuula Waaqayyoo duratti waan hamaa hojjetan; innis dabarsee waggaa torbaaf harka Midiyaanotaatti isaan kenne.
The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight. So the Lord handed them over to the Midianites for seven years.
2 Israaʼeloonni sababii harki Midiyaanotaa isaanitti jabaateef tulluuwwan irratti, holqaa fi daʼannoo jabaa keessatti ofii isaaniitiif iddoo jiraatanii fi iddoo itti daʼatan qopheeffatan.
The Midianite oppression was so great that because of them the Israelites made themselves hiding places in mountains, caves, and fortifications.
3 Yeroo Israaʼeloonni midhaan facaafatan hunda Midiyaanonni, Amaaleqoonnii fi namoonni baʼa biiftuu kaan dhufanii isaan weeraru turan.
Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and other peoples from the east would come and attack them.
4 Achis qubatanii midhaan hamma Gaazaatti jiru hundumaa balleessan; isaan waan lubbuu qabu hoolota, loon yookaan harroota tokko illee Israaʼelootaaf hin hambifne.
They would set up their camps and destroy the country's crops as far away as Gaza. They didn't leave anything to eat in the whole of Israel, and they took for themselves all the sheep, cattle, and donkeys.
5 Akkuma tuuta hawwaannisaattis horii fi dunkaana isaanii fudhatanii isaan irra yaaʼan. Namootaa fi gaalawwan isaanii lakkaaʼuun hin dandaʼamu ture; isaanis biyya sana barbadeessuudhaaf weeraran.
They arrived in huge numbers with their livestock and tents like swarms of locusts, with so many camels they couldn't be counted. They invaded the land to completely devastate it.
6 Sababii Midiyaanonni akka malee isaan hiyyoomsaniif Israaʼeloonni gargaarsa barbaacha gara Waaqayyootti iyyatan.
The Israelites were made desperately poor by the Midianites and they called out to the Lord for help.
7 Yeroo Israaʼeloonni sababii Midiyaanotaatiif gara Waaqayyootti iyyatanitti,
When the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help because of the Midianites,
8 inni raajii akkana jedhee dubbatu tokko isaaniif erge; “Waaqayyo Waaqni Israaʼel akkana jedha: Ani biyya Gibxi, biyya garbummaatii baaseen isin fide.
the Lord sent the Israelites a prophet. He told them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought you out of Egypt; I led you out from the place where you were slaves.
9 Ani humna warra Gibxii fi harka cunqursitootaa jalaa isin furee fuula keessan duraas ariʼee isaan baasee biyya isaanii isinii kenneera.
I saved you from the power of the Egyptians and from everyone who oppressed you. I expelled them before you and gave their land to you.
10 Isiniinis, ‘Ani Waaqayyo Waaqa keessan; waaqota Amoorotaa kanneen isin biyya isaanii keessa jiraattan sanaa hin waaqeffatinaa’ jedheera. Isin garuu sagalee koo hin dhageenye.”
I warned you: I am the Lord your God. You must not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you're now living.’ But you didn't listen to me.”
11 Ergamaan Waaqayyoos ganda Ofraa jedhamu dhufee qilxuu Yooʼaash namicha sanyii Abiiʼezer sanaa jala taaʼe; Gidewoon ilmi Yooʼaash immoo akka Midiyaanonni hin argineef iddoo wayiniin itti cuunfamutti dhoksee qamadii dhaʼata ture.
The angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak tree in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress there to hide it from the Midianites.
12 Ergamaan Waaqayyoos isatti mulʼatee, “Yaa loltuu goota nana, Waaqayyo si wajjin jira” jedheen.
The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “The Lord is with you, great man of courage!”
13 Gidewoon garuu akkana jedhee deebise; “Garuu yaa gooftaa, utuu Waaqayyo nu wajjin jiraatee wanni kun hundi maaliif nurra gaʼa? Dinqiiwwan isaa kanneen abbootiin keenya, ‘Waaqayyo biyya Gibxiitii nu baaseera’ jedhanii nutti himan sun hundi eessa jiru ree? Amma garuu Waaqayyo nu dhiisee harka Midiyaanotaatti dabarsee nu kenneera.”
“Excuse me, my lord, but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us?” Gideon replied. “Where are all his wonderful miracles that our forefathers reminded us about when they said, ‘Wasn't it the Lord who led us out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has given up on us and has handed us over to the Midianites.”
14 Waaqayyo gara Gidewoonitti garagalee, “Humna qabdu kanaan dhaqiitii harka Midiyaanotaa jalaa Israaʼeloota bilisa baasi. Anatu si ergaa jira mitii?” jedheen.
The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength that you have and save Israel from the Midianites. Aren't I the one sending you?”
15 Gidewoon garuu, “Yaa Gooftaa, gosti koo sanyii Minaasee keessaa baayʼee dadhabaa dha; anis maatii koo keessaa nama gad aanaa dha. Egaa ani akkamittin saba Israaʼel bilisoomsuu dandaʼa ree?” jedhee gaafate.
“Excuse me, my lord, but how can I save Israel?” Gideon replied. “My family is the least important of the tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least important person of that family!”
16 Waaqayyos, “Ani si wajjin jira; atis Midiyaanota hunda walitti qabdee dhoofta” jedhee deebiseef.
“I will be with you,” the Lord told him. “You will defeat the Midianites as if they were just one man.”
17 Gidewoonis akkana jedhee deebise; “Yoo ani fuula kee duratti surraa argadhee jiraadhe, kan natti dubbachaa jiru dhugumaan siʼi taʼuu mallattoo na argisiisi.
“Please, Lord, if you think well of me, give me a sign that it's really you telling me this,” Gideon asked.
18 Maaloo hamma ani deebiʼee aarsaa koo fidee fuula kee duratti dhiʼeessutti hin deemin.” Waaqayyos, “Ani hamma ati deebitutti sin eega” jedheen.
“Don't leave until I come back and present my offering to you.” “I will remain here until you return,” he replied.
19 Gidewoon gara mana isaa deemee ilmoo reʼee tokko qalee qopheessee daakuu iifii tokkoo fuudhee buddeena raacitii hin qabne tolche. Foon sanas gundoo irra kaaʼee bishaan foon sanaa immoo okkoteetti naqee fiduudhaan qilxuu jalatti aarsaa isaaf dhiʼeesse.
Gideon went and cooked a young goat, and baked some unleavened bread from an ephah of flour. He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot. He carried them out and presented them to the angel under the oak tree.
20 Ergamaan Waaqaas, “Foonii fi Maxinoo kana fuudhiitii kattaa kana irra kaaʼi; bishaan isaa immoo dhangalaasi” jedhe. Gidewoonis akkasuma godhe.
The angel of God told him, “Place the meat and the unleavened bread on this rock and pour the broth over them.” So Gideon did.
21 Ergamaan Waaqayyoo sunis fiixee ulee harka isaa tureetiin foonii fi Maxinoo sana tuqe. Ibiddi kattaa keessaa baʼee foonii fi Maxinoo sana nyaate. Ergamaan Waaqayyoos fuula isaa duraa dhabame.
The angel of the Lord held out the staff he was holding and touched the meat and unleavened bread with the tip. Fire flamed from the rock and burned up the meat and unleavened bread. Then the angel vanished.
22 Gidewoon yommuu akka ergamaa Waaqayyoo arge beeketti, “Wayyoo, yaa Waaqayyo Gooftaa! Ani ifaan ifatti ergamaa Waaqayyoo argeeraatii!” jedhe.
When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he cried out, “Oh no, Lord God! I've seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”
23 Waaqayyo garuu, “Nagaan siif haa taʼu! Hin sodaatin, ati hin duutuutii” jedheen.
But the Lord told him, “Peace! Don't worry, you're not going to die.”
24 Kanaafuu Gidewoon Waaqayyoof achitti iddoo aarsaa ijaaree, “Waaqayyo Nagaa dha” jedhee moggaase. Iddoon aarsaa kun hamma harʼaatti lafa Abiiʼezerootaa irra iddoo Ofraa jedhamu dhaabateera.
So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it “The Lord is Peace.” It's still there today, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
25 Waaqayyo halkanuma sana akkana isaan jedhe; “Karra loon abbaa keetii keessaa korma lammaffaa kan waggaa torba guute tokko fuudhi. Iddoo aarsaa kan abbaan kee Baʼaaliif tolche diigi; utubaa Aasheeraa kan isa bira dhaabames jigsi.
That night the Lord told Gideon, “Take your father's bull and a second bull seven years old, and tear down your father's altar of Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
26 Fiixee gaara kanaa irrattis Waaqayyo Waaqa keetiif iddoo aarsaa bareedaa isaa tolchi. Qoraan utubaa Aasheeraa kan jigsite sanattis fayyadamii korma lammaffaa sana aarsaa gubamu godhiitii dhiʼeessi.”
Then build an altar to the Lord your God in the proper way on hilltop. Using the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down as firewood, take the second bull and present it as a burnt offering.”
27 Gidewoonis hojjettoota isaa keessaa nama kudhan fudhatee akkuma Waaqayyo isatti hime sana godhe. Garuu waan maatii isaatii fi namoota magaalaa sana jiraatan sodaateef guyyaa adiin gochuu irra halkan filate.
Gideon accompanied by ten of his servants did what the Lord had told him. However, because he was afraid of his family and the people of the town, he did it during the night rather than in the day.
28 Ganama barii yommuu namoonni magaalaa sanaa hirribaa kaʼanitti iddoon aarsaa Baʼaal diigamee, utubaan Aasheeraas kufee kormi lammaffaan iddoo aarsaa haaraa tolfame sana irratti qalamee ture!
Early in the morning when the people of the town got up, they saw that the altar of Baal had been torn down and the Asherah pole beside it had been cut down, with the second bull sacrificed on the altar that had just been built.
29 Isaanis, “Eenyutu waan kana hojjete?” jedhanii wal gaafatan. Yommuu gad fageenyaan qoratanittis, “Gidewoon ilma Yooʼaashitu waan kana godhe” jedhan.
They asked one another, “Who did this?” They made inquiries and they were told, “Gideon, son of Joash, did it.”
30 Namoonni magaalaa sanaas Yooʼaashiin, “Ilma kee gad baasi. Inni sababii iddoo aarsaa Baʼaal diigee utubaa Aasheeraas jigseef ajjeefamuu qaba” jedhan.
“Hand over your son,” the people of the town ordered Joash. “He must die, because he has torn down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”
31 Yooʼaash garuu saba aariidhaan guutamee isa marse sanaan akkana jedhe; “Isin Baʼaaliif falmuu barbaaddu? Isas oolchuu feetuu? Namni isaaf falmu yoo jiraate inni ganama haa duʼu! Baʼaal utuu dhugumaan Waaqa taʼee yommuu namni tokko iddoo aarsaa isaa diigu inni of irraa dhowwuu dandaʼa ture.”
Joash replied to all those confronting him, “Are you arguing on Baal's behalf? Do you have to save him? Anyone who argues for him will be put to death by morning! If he is a god let him fight for himself against those who tore down his altar.”
32 Kanaafuu isaan sababii inni iddoo aarsaa isaa jalaa diigeef, “Baʼaal mataan isaa haa falmatu” jechuudhaan Gidewooniin, “Yerub-Baʼaal” jedhanii waaman.
That day Gideon was called Jerub-baal, which means “Let Baal fight with him,” because he had torn down his altar.
33 Ergasiis Midiyaanonni hundi, Amaaleqoonnii fi namoonni karaa baʼa biiftuu humna isaanii walitti dabalatanii Yordaanos ceʼuudhaan Sulula Yizriʼeel keessa qubatan.
All the Midianites, Amalekites, and other peoples of the East gathered together and crossed over the Jordan. They camped in the Valley of Jezreel.
34 Hafuurri Waaqayyoos dhufee Gidewoon irra buʼe; innis akka Abiiʼezeroonni isa duukaa buʼaniif waamuuf malakata afuufe.
The Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon, and he blew the trumpet, calling Abiezrites to join him.
35 Guutummaa Minaasee keessas ergamoota ergate; isaanis isa duukaa buʼuuf walitti qabaman; akkasumas gara Aasheer, Zebuuloonii fi Niftaalemitti ergate; isaanis jara simachuuf gad yaaʼan.
He sent messengers through the whole territory of Manasseh, calling them to join him, and also to Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so they also came and joined the others.
36 Gidewoonis Waaqaan akkana jedhe; “Yoo ati akkuma waadaa galtetti harka kootiin Israaʼel furte,
Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel through me as you promised,
37 kunoo, ani wayyaa rifeensa hoolaa irraa hojjetame tokko oobdii irra nan diriirsa. Yoo rifeensa hoolaa sana qofa irra fixeensi buʼee lafti immoo goggogaa taʼe, ani akka ati akkuma jette sana harka kootiin Israaʼel furtu nan beeka.”
then look—I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If the fleece is wet with dew but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to save Israel through me as you promised.”
38 Wanni sunis akkasuma taʼe. Gidewoonis guyyaa itti aanu ganamaan kaʼe; yeroo inni wayyaa rifeensa hoolaa irraa hojjetame sana micciirettis bishaan waciitii guutuutu keessaa cuunfame.
That's what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he pressed on the fleece and squeezed out the dew, enough water to fill a bowl.
39 Kana irratti Gidewoon Waaqaan, “Natti hin dheekkamin. Amma illee waan tokkon si gaafadha. Akka ani rifeensa hoolaa sana irratti yaalii biraa godhuuf naa eeyyami. Amma immoo rifeensa sana goggogsiitii fixeensa lafatti uffisi.”
Then Gideon said to God, “Please don't get cross with me. Just let me make one more request. Let me do one more test with the fleece. This time let the fleece be dry and the whole ground covered with dew.”
40 Waaqnis halkan sana akkasuma godhe. Rifeensa hoolaa sana qofatu goggogaa ture; lafti guutuun fixeemsaan haguugamee ture.
That night God did exactly that. The fleece alone was dry and the whole ground was covered with dew.
