1 Eliifaaz namichi Teemaan sun akkana jedhee deebise:
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered Job.
2 “Yoo namni tokko sitti dubbachuu yaale, ati ni komattaa? Garuu eenyutu dubbachuu dhiisa?
“Could I say a word? I don't want to upset you but who could keep quiet and not respond?
3 Ati akka nama baayʼee barsiifte, akka harka dadhabaa illee jajjabeessite yaadadhu.
You've certainly encouraged many people and supported those who are weak.
4 Dubbiin kee warra gatantaran gargaaree dhaabeera; atis jilba laafe jabeessiteerta.
Your advice has helped those who are stumbling not to fall, and you have strengthened those whose knees are weak.
5 Amma garuu rakkinni sirra gaʼe; atis abdii kutatteerta; rakkinni si miidheera; atis rifatteerta;
But now you're the one suffering and you're upset.
6 Waaqa sodaachuun kee irkoo kee, qajeelinni karaa keetiis abdii kee mitii?
Wasn't it your reverence for God that gave you confidence and your integrity that gave you hope?
7 “Ammas yaadadhu; namni qulqulluun takkumaa badee beekaa? Qajeelonni eessatti badanii beeku?
Think about it: since when did the innocent die? Since when were good people destroyed?
8 Akka ani hubadhetti warri waan hamaa qotatan, kanneen waan hamaa facaasanis isuma haammatu.
From what I've seen it's those who plant evil and sow trouble who reap the same!
9 Isaanis hafuura Waaqni isaanitti baafatuun badu; hafuuraa dheekkamsa isaaniitiinis ni barbadeeffamu.
A breath from God destroys them; a blast of his anger wipes them out.
10 Leenci ni aada; ni gururiʼas; ilkaan leenca saafelaa garuu ni caccaba.
Lions may roar and growl, but their teeth still break.
11 Leenci jabaan waan adamsu dhabee ni duʼa; ilmaan leenca dhaltuus ni bittinnaaʼu.
Even a lion dies from lack of food, and the lioness' cubs are scattered.
12 “Dubbiin tokko icciitiidhaan naa fidame; gurri koos asaasa isaa dhagaʼe.
A word quietly crept up on me; a whisper reached my ear.
13 Abjuu halkanii sodaachisaa keessa, yommuu hirribni cimaan nama qabatutti,
Troubling thoughts came to me in nightmares when you fall into a deep sleep.
14 sodaa fi hollachuun na qabatee lafee koo hunda raase.
I became terrified and trembled; all my bones were shaking.
15 Hafuurri luffi jedhee fuula koo dura darbe; rifeensi dhagna koos kaʼee dhaabate.
Then a breath brushed my face and gave me goose-pimples.
16 Innis ni dhaabate; ani garuu inni maal akka taʼe hubachuu hin dandeenye. Fakkiin tokko ija koo dura dhaabate; anis sagalee tasgabbii kan akkana jedhu tokkon dhagaʼe:
Something stopped, but I couldn't see its face. My eyes could only make out a shape. It was totally quiet, and then I heard a voice:
17 ‘Namni duʼa hin oolle, Waaqa caalaa qajeelaa taʼuu dandaʼaa? Namni Uumaa isaa caalaa qulqulluu taʼuu dandaʼaa?
‘Can anyone be right before God? Can anyone be pure before their Maker?
18 Waaqni tajaajiltoota isaa hin amanatu; ergamoota isaas balleessaa isaaniitiin ni gaafata;
If he doesn't even trust his servants, and he says his angels make mistakes,
19 yoos warri manneen suphee keessa jiraatan, warri hundeen isaanii biyyoo taʼe, warri bilii caalaa burkutaaʼan immoo akkam haa taʼan ree?
how much more does this apply to those who live in these houses made of clay, whose foundations are based on dust, who fall apart like clothing to a moth?
20 Isaan ganamaa fi galgala gidduutti burkutaaʼu; tasumas bara baraan ni badu.
Alive in the morning, they are dead by evening. They die, unnoticed.
21 Akka isaan ogummaa malee duʼaniif funyoon dunkaana isaanii hin luqqifamnee?’
They are like tent ropes that are pulled up, and they collapse in death. They die without wisdom.’
