1 Eliifaaz Teemaanichi akkana jedhee deebise:
And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 “Namni ogeessi tokko dubbii faayidaa hin qabneen deebii kennaa? Yookaan bubbee baʼa biiftuutiin garaa isaa guutataa?
Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,
3 Inni dubbii faayidaa hin qabneen, haasaa buʼaa hin qabneenis ni falmaa?
Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?
4 Ati garuu Waaqa sodaachuu ni tuffatta; Waaqa kadhachuu illee nama dhowwita.
Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God.
5 Cubbuun kee afaan kee ni barsiifti; atis afaan jalʼootaa filatta.
For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
6 Afaanuma keetu sitti mura malee afaan koo miti; arrabuma keetu ragaa sitti taʼa.
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.
7 “Situ nama hunda dura dhalatee? Yookaan situ tulluuwwan dura argamee?
Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 Ati dhoksaa Waaqaa dhageesseertaa? Ogummaas ofuma keetiif dhuunfattaa?
Hast thou listened in the secret council of God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?
9 Wanni ati beektu kan nu hin beekne maali? Hubannaan ati qabdu kan nu hin qabne maali?
What knowest thou that we know not? [what] understandest thou which is not in us?
10 Namoonni arrii baasanii fi kanneen jaaran, warri abbaa kee iyyuu caalaa dullooman nu gidduu jiru.
Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
11 Gorsi Waaqaa kan nama jajjabeessu, dubbiin suutaan sitti himame sun si hanqatee?
Are the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
12 Yaadni kee maaliif si fudhatee bada? Ijas maaliif babaafta?
Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
13 Wanni akka ati Waaqatti aartu, akka dubbiin akkasiis afaan keetii baʼu godhe maali?
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?
14 “Akka qulqulluu taʼuuf namni maali? Yookaan akka qajeeltota taʼaniif warri dubartoota irraa dhalatan maali?
What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Yoo Waaqni qulqulloota isaa illee amanuu baatee samiiwwan iyyuu fuula isaa duratti qulqulluu taʼuu baatan,
Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:
16 yoos sanyiin namaa inni hamaa fi xuraaʼaan, kan akkuma bishaaniitti cubbuu dhugu sun hammam hammasii gad haa taʼu ree!
How much less the abominable and corrupt, — man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!
17 “Na dhaggeeffadhu; ani siifan ibsaa; waanan arges sitti nan hima;
I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;
18 waan namoonni ogeeyyiin waan abbootii isaanii irraa dhagaʼan keessaa tokko illee utuu hin dhoksin odeessan sana nan dubbadha;
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;
19 biyyattiin abbootii isaanii qofaaf kennamte; alagaan tokko iyyuu isaan gidduu hin jiraanne.
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 Namni dabaan bara jireenya isaa guutuu, gara jabeessis bara isaaf qoodame guutuu ni rakkata.
All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
21 Sagaleen sodaachisaan gurra isaatti ni iyya; utuma inni nagaan jiraatuus saamtonni tasuma itti dhufu.
The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.
22 Inni akka deebiʼee dukkana keessaa baʼu hin amanu; goraadeetu isa eeggata.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
23 Inni waan nyaatamu barbaacha asii fi achi joora; akka guyyaan dukkanaa dhiʼaates ni beeka.
He wandereth abroad for bread, — where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Dhiphinaa fi gaddi isa sodaachisu; akkuma mootii lolaaf qophaaʼeettis isatti cimu;
Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
25 inni harka isaa Waaqatti ol fudhatee Waaqa Waan Hunda Dandaʼus tuffateera;
For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:
26 gaachana yabbuu fi jabaa qabatee isaan mormuuf mata jabinaan baʼeera.
He runneth against him, with [outstretched] neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;
27 “Yoo fuulli isaa coomaan haguugamee mudhiin isaa foon baasee iitaʼe iyyuu,
For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon [his] flanks.
28 inni magaalaawwan barbadaaʼan keessa, manneen namni tokko iyyuu keessa hin jiraanne, kanneen diigamanii tuulamuu gaʼan keessa jiraata.
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.
29 Inni siʼachi hin sooromu; qabeenyi isaas hin jiraatu; yookaan qabeenyi isaa lafa irra hin turu.
He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.
30 Inni dukkana jalaa hin baʼu; arrabni ibiddaa damee isaa ni gogsa; hafuurri afaan Waaqaatii baʼus isa fudhata.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Inni sababii beenyaa tokko illee hin arganneef, waan faayidaa hin qabne amanachuudhaan of hin gowwoomsin.
Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;
32 Inni utuu yeroon isaa hin gaʼin ni coollaga; dameen isaas hin lalisu.
It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.
33 Inni akka muka wayinii iji isaa utuu hin bilchaatin irraa funaanamee, akka ejersa daraaraa isaa of irraa harcaasee ni taʼa.
He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.
34 Gareen warra Waaqaaf hin bullee ni maseena; ibiddis dunkaana warra mattaʼaa jaallatanii ni guba.
For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 Isaan rakkina ulfaaʼanii hammina dhalan; garaan isaaniis jalʼina yaada.”
They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
