< Uumama 24 >
1 Yeroo sana Abrahaam dulloomee, umuriin isaa akka malee dheeratee ture; Waaqayyos waan hundumaan isa eebbise.
Abraham by now was old, really old, and the Lord had blessed him in every possible way.
2 Innis tajaajilaa mana isaa hangafa kan waan inni qabu hunda irratti itti gaafatamaa taʼeen akkana jedhe; “Mee harka kee gudeeda koo jala kaaʼi.
At that time Abraham told his oldest servant who was in charge of his whole household, “Put your hand under my thigh,
3 Ani akka ati intallan warra Kanaʼaan kanneen ani gidduu isaanii jiraadhuu keessaa ilma kootiif niitii hin fidneef Waaqayyo Waaqa samiitii fi Waaqa lafaatiin kakattu nan barbaada;
and swear an oath by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you won't arrange for my son to marry any daughter of the these Canaanite people that I'm living among.
4 garuu gara biyya kootii fi gara firoota koo dhaqiitii ilma koo Yisihaaqiif niitii barbaadi.”
Instead, go to my homeland where my relatives live, and find a wife there for my son Isaac.”
5 Tajaajilaan sun immoo, “Yoo dubartiin sun na wajjin gara biyya kanaa dhufuuf fedhii qabaachuu baatte hoo? Ani ilma kee gara biyya ati keessaa dhufte sanaatti deebisee geessuun qabaa?” jedhee isa gaafate.
“What if the woman refuses to come back with me to this country?” the servant asked. “Should I take your son back to the country you came from?”
6 Abrahaamis akkana isaan jedhe; “Ati akka ilma koo deebiftee biyya sanatti hin geessine of eeggadhu.
“No, you mustn't take my son back there,” Abraham replied.
7 Waaqayyo Waaqni samii inni mana abbaa kootii fi biyya ani itti dhaladhe keessaa na fidee, ‘Ani biyya kana sanyii keetiif nan kenna’ jechuudhaan natti dubbatee kakatee waadaa naa seene sun akka ati achii ilma kootiif niitii fidduuf ergamaa isaa fuula kee dura ni erga.
“The Lord, the God of heaven, took me from my family home and my own country. He spoke to me and swore an oath to me in which he promised, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ He is the one who will send his angel ahead of you so that you can find a wife there for my son.
8 Yoo dubartiin sun si wajjin dhufuuf fedhii qabaachuu baatte immoo ati kakuu koo kana irraa bilisa taata. Ilma koo garuu gonkumaa achi hin deebisin.”
However, if the woman refuses to return here with you, then you are released from this oath. But make sure you don't take my son back there.”
9 Kanaafuu tajaajilaan sun harka isaa gudeeda gooftaa isaa Abrahaam jala kaaʼee waaʼee waan kanaa kakateef.
The servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to do as he had been told.
10 Tajaajilaan sunis gaala gooftaa isaa keessaa kudhan fudhatee gooftaa isaa biraa immoo kennaawwan filatamoo gosa hundaa feʼatee qajeele; innis magaalaa Naahoor ishee kaaba dhiʼa Phaadaan Arraam keessatti argamtuu dhaqe.
Then the servant arranged for ten of his master's camels to carry all kinds of valuable gifts from Abraham and left for the town of Nahor in Aram-naharaim.
11 Innis akka gaalawwan sun magaalattiin alatti boolla bishaanii cina jijilbeenfatan godhe; yeroon sun gara galgalaa yeroo itti dubartoonni bishaan waraabbachuu baʼan ture.
Arriving in the evening, he had the camels kneel down by the spring that was outside the town. This was the time when women went out to fetch water.
12 Innis akkana jedhee kadhate; “Yaa Waaqayyo Waaqa gooftaa koo Abrahaam, harʼa na milkeessiitii gooftaa koo Abrahaamiif garaa laafi.
He prayed, “Lord, the God of my master Abraham, please let me be successful today, and please show your faithfulness to my master Abraham.
13 Kunoo, ani burqaa kana bira dhaabadheen jira; intallan warra magaalaa kanaas bishaan waraabbachuuf as baʼaa jiru.
Look, I'm standing here beside this spring, and the young women of the town are coming to get water.
14 Intalli ani, ‘Maaloo akka ani bishaan dhuguuf okkotee kee gad qabi’ jedheenii isheenis, ‘Dhugi; ani gaalawwan kees siifin obaasaa’ naan jettu ishee ati garbicha kee Yisihaaqiif filatte haa taatu. Anis kanaan akka ati gooftaa kootiif garaa laafte beeka.”
May it happen like this. The young woman that I ask, ‘Please hold your water jar so I can have a drink,’ and she replies, ‘Please drink, and I'll give your camels water too’ —may she be the one you've chosen as a wife for your servant Isaac. This way I'll know that you've shown your faithfulness to my master.”
15 Utuu inni kadhatee hin fixatin Ribqaan okkotee ishee gatiittiitti baadhattee dhufte. Isheenis intala ilma Miilkaa kan Betuuʼeel jedhamu sanaa turte; Miilkaan immoo niitii obboleessa Abrahaam kan Naahoor jedhamu sanaa ti.
He hadn't even finished praying when he saw Rebekah coming to get water, carrying her water jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milkah. Milkah was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor.
16 Intalli sunis akka malee bareedduu fi durba turte; dhiirri tokko iyyuu ishee wajjin hin ciifne. Isheenis gara burqaatti gad buutee okkotee isheetti bishaan guuttattee ol deebite.
She was very beautiful, a virgin—no one had slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came back up.
17 Tajaajilaan sunis ishee simachuuf itti fiigee, “Maaloo okkotee kee keessaa bishaan xinnoo ishee naa kenni” jedheen.
The servant ran over to meet her and asked, “Please let me drink a few sips of water from your jar.”
18 Isheenis, “Yaa gooftaa ko, dhugi” jetteenii daftee okkotee ishee harkatti gad buufattee bishaan dhugaatii kenniteef.
“Please drink, my lord,” she replied. She quickly lifted the jar down from her shoulder and held it for him to drink.
19 Isheenis erga bishaan isa obaaftee booddee, “Ani gaalawwan keetiifis hamma isaan dhuganii dheebuu baʼanitti nan waraaba” jette.
After she finished giving him a drink, she said, “Let me get water for your camels too until they've had enough.”
20 Daftees okkotee ishee keessaa bidiruutti garagalchitee ammas bishaan waraabuudhaaf gara boolla bishaaniitti fiigde; gaalawwan isaa hundaafis bishaan waraabde.
She quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran back to the spring to get more water. She brought enough for all his camels.
21 Namichi sunis akka Waaqayyo karaa isaaf milkeesse yookaan akka isaaf hin milkeessin baruuf jedhee calʼisee xiyyeeffatee ishee ilaalaa ture.
The man observed her in silence to see if the Lord had made his journey successful or not.
22 Erga gaalawwan bishaan dhuganii booddee namichi amartii funyaanii kan warqee kan walakkaa saqilii ulfaatuu fi bitawoo warqee kan saqilii kudhan ulfaatu lama gad baasee,
Once the camels had finished drinking, he gave her a gold nose-ring and two heavy gold bracelets for her wrists.
23 “Ati intala eenyuu ti? Yoo mana abbaa keetii iddoon bulan jiraatte maaloo mee natti himi” jedhee gaafate.
Then he asked her, “Whose daughter are you? Also could you tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?”
24 Isheenis, “Ani intala Betuuʼeel; Betuuʼeel immoo ilma Miilkaan Naahooriif deessee dha” isaan jette.
She replied, “I'm the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah and Nahor.” Then she added, “We have plenty of straw and food for the camels,
25 Itti dabaltees, “Cidii fi okaa baayʼee qabna; kutaan isin bultanis jira” jetteen.
and yes, we have room for you to spend the night.”
26 Namichis gad jedhee Waaqayyoof sagade;
The man kneeled down and bowed in worship to the Lord.
27 akkanas jedhe; “Waaqayyo Waaqni gooftaa koo Abrahaam kan arjummaa isaatii fi amanamummaa isaa gooftaa koo hin dhowwatin sun haa eebbifamu. Waaqayyo anas gara mana obboloota gooftaa kootti karaa irra na qajeelcheera.”
“Thank you Lord, the God of my master Abraham,” he prayed. “You have not forgotten your commitment and faithfulness to my master. And Lord, you have led me directly to the home of my master's relatives!”
28 Intalattiinis fiigdee dhaqxee warra mana haadha ishee jiranitti waaʼee waan kanaa himte.
She ran to her mother's house and told her family what had happened.
29 Ribqaan obboleessa Laabaa jedhamu tokko qabdi turte; Laabaanis fiigee namicha burqaa bishaanii bira jiru sana bira dhaqe.
Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he ran out to meet the man who had remained at the spring.
30 Innis yommuu obboleettii isaa irratti amartii funyaanii warqeetii fi bitawoo argetti, yommuu utuu Ribqaan waan namichi sun isheedhaan jedhe dubbattuu dhagaʼetti, gara namichaatti gad baʼe; namichis burqaa bishaanii cina gaalawwan bira dhaabatee ture.
He'd noticed the nose-ring and the bracelets she was wearing, and he'd heard his sister Rebekah explaining, “This is what the man told me.” When he arrived the man was still there, standing with his camels beside the spring.
31 Namicha sanaanis, “Yaa namicha Waaqayyo eebbise, kottu; ati maaliif ala dhaabatta? Ani manicha qopheesseera; gaalawwaniifis iddoo qopheesseera” jedhe.
“Please come home with me, you who are blessed by the Lord,” said Laban. “What are you standing out here for? I've got a room at home ready for you, and a place for the camels to stay.”
32 Kanaafuu namichi sun gara manaa dhaqe; Laabaanis gaalawwan irraa feʼiisa buusee cidii fi okaa kenneef; akka miilla isaanii dhiqataniif immoo namichaa fi warra isa wajjin turaniif bishaan kenne.
So the man went home with him. Laban unloaded the camels and gave them straw and food to eat. He also provided water for the man to wash his feet, as well as for the men who were with him.
33 Ergasiis nyaanni dhiʼaateef; namichi sun garuu, “Ani hamman dhimma koo himadhutti hin nyaadhu” jedhe. Laabaanis, “Himadhukaa” jedheen.
Then Laban had food brought in. But the man told him, “I'm not going to eat until I've explained why I'm here.” “Please explain,” Laban replied.
34 Innis akkana jedhe; “Ani tajaajilaa Abrahaamii ti.
“I'm Abraham's servant,” the man began.
35 Waaqayyo, gooftaa koo guddaa eebbiseera; innis sooromeera. Hoolotaa fi loowwan, meetii fi warqee, garboota dhiiraatii fi dubartii, gaalawwanii fi harroota isaaf kenneera.
“The Lord has blessed my master so much, and now he is a wealthy and powerful man. The Lord has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.
36 Niitiin gooftaa kootii Saaraan bara dulluma ishee keessa ilma isaaf deesse; innis waan qabu hunda ilma isaatiif kenneera.
His wife Sarah has had a son for my master even in her old age, and my master has given him everything he owns.
37 Gooftaan koo akkana jedhee na kakachiise; ‘Ati intallan Kanaʼaan kanneen ani biyya isaanii keessa jiraadhu keessaa ilma koof niitii hin fidin;
My master made me swear an oath, saying, ‘You must not arrange for my son to marry any daughter of the Canaanite people in whose land I'm living.
38 garuu gara mana abbaa kootii fi gara gosa koo dhaqiitii ilma kootiif niitii fidi.’
Instead, go to my family home where my relatives live, and find a wife there for my son Isaac.’
39 “Anis, ‘Yoo dubartiin sun na wajjin dhufuuf fedhii qabaachuu baattee hoo?’ jedhee gooftaa koo nan gaafadhe.
I said to my master, ‘What if the woman refuses to come back with me?’
40 “Innis akkana naan jedhe; ‘Waaqayyo inni ani fuula isaa dura jiraadhu ergamaa isaa si wajjin ergee karaa kee siif milkeessa; atis gosa koo fi mana abbaa koo keessaa ilma kootiif niitii ni fidda.
He told me, ‘The Lord, in whose presence I have lived my life, will send his angel with you, and he will make your journey successful—you will find a wife for my son from my relatives, from my father's family.
41 Ati yommuu gara gosa koo dhaqxu kakuu koo irraa bilisa taata; yoo isaan intala sana sitti kennuu didani iyyuu ati kakuu koo irraa bilisa taata.’
You will be released from the oath you swear to me if, when you go to my family, they refuse to let her return with you.’
42 “Ani harʼa yommuun gara burqaa kanaa dhufetti akkanan jedhe; ‘Yaa Waaqayyo, Waaqa gooftaa koo Abrahaam yoo fedhii kee taʼe karaa ani deemu naa milkeessi.
Today when I arrived at the spring, I prayed, Lord, God of my master Abraham, please let the journey I have taken be successful.
43 Kunoo, ani burqaa kana bira dhaabadheera; yoo durbi tokko bishaan waraabbachuu dhuftee ani immoo, “Maaloo okkotee kee keessaa bishaan xinnoo ishee na obaasi” jedheenii,
Look, I'm standing here beside this spring. May it happen like this. If a young woman comes to get water, and I say, ‘Please give me a few sips of water to drink,’
44 isheenis, “Dhugi; ani gaalawwan keetiifis nan waraaba” naan jette, isheen kan Waaqayyo ilma gooftaa kootiif file haa taatu.’
and she says to me, ‘Please drink, and I'll get water for your camels too’ —may she be the one you've chosen as a wife for your servant Isaac.”
45 “Utuu ani garaa koo keessatti kadhadhee hin fixatin Ribqaan okkotee ishee gatiittiitti baadhattee gad dhufte. Isheenis gara burqaa sanaatti gad buutee bishaan waraabbatte; anis, ‘Maaloo bishaan na obaasi’ nan jedheen.
“I hadn't even finished praying silently when I saw Rebekah coming to get water, carrying her water jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring to get water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
46 “Isheenis daftee okkotee ishee gatiittii irraa gad buufattee, ‘Dhugi; ani gaalawwan kees nan obaasaa’ jette. Anis nan dhuge; isheen immoo gaalawwan obaafte.
She quickly lifted the jar down from her shoulder and she said, ‘Please drink, and I'll get water for your camels too.’ So I drank, and she got water for the camels.
47 “Anis, ‘Ati intala eenyuu ti?’ jedheen ishee gaafadhe. “Ishee immoo, ‘Ani intala Betuuʼeel; Betuuʼeel immoo ilma Miilkaan Naahooriif deessee dha’ jette. “Anis funyaan isheetti amartii, harka isheetti immoo bitawoo nan kaaʼe.
I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘I'm the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah and Nahor.’ So I put the ring in her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.
48 Anis gad jedhee Waaqayyoof nan sagade; Waaqayyo Waaqa gooftaa koo Abrahaam isa akka ani intala fira isaa ilma isaatiif geessu karaa qajeelaa irra na buuse sana nan eebbise.
Then I kneeled down and bowed in worship to the Lord. I thanked the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, for he led me directly to find my master's niece for his son.
49 Egaa isin yoo gooftaa kootti garaa laafummaa fi amanamummaa argisiiftan natti himaa; yoo taʼuu baate immoo akka ani gara bitaatti yookaan gara mirgaatti goru natti himaa.”
So please tell me now, will you show commitment and faithfulness to my master? Please tell me yes or no so I can decide what to do next.”
50 Laabaa fi Betuuʼeelis akkana jedhanii deebisan; “Wanni kun Waaqayyo biraa dhufe; nu waan hamaa yookaan waan tolaa sitti dubbachuu hin dandeenyu.
Laban and Bethuel replied, “Clearly all this is from the Lord, so we can't argue one way or the other.
51 Kunoo, Ribqaan fuula kee dura jirti; ishee fudhadhuu deemi; isheenis akkuma Waaqayyo dubbatetti niitii ilma gooftaa keetii haa taatu.”
Rebekah's here, you can take her and leave. She can become the wife of your master's son, as the Lord has decided.”
52 Tajaajilaan Abrahaamis yommuu waan isaan jedhan dhagaʼetti lafatti gombifamee Waaqayyoof sagade.
As soon as Abraham's servant heard their decision, he bowed down in worship to the Lord.
53 Kana booddees tajaajilaan sun faaya meetii fi warqee, uffata adda addaas baasee Ribqaadhaaf kenne; obboleessa isheetii fi haadha isheetiifis kennaa gatii guddaa baasu kenne.
Then he unpacked silver and gold jewelry and expensive clothes and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave valuable presents to her brother and her mother.
54 Innii fi namoonni isa wajjin turanis nyaatanii dhuganii achuma bulan. Yommuu isaan guyyaa itti aanu ganamaan kaʼanitti tajaajilaan sun, “Akka ani gara gooftaa kootti deebiʼuuf na geggeessaa” jedhe.
He and the men with him ate and drank, and spent the night there. When they got up in the morning, he said, “Let me leave now and go home to my master.”
55 Obboleessi isheetii fi haati ishee garuu, “Intalattiin guyyuma kudhan illee nu bira haa turtu; ergasiis isheen deemuu dandeessi” jedhan.
But her brother and her mother said, “Let her stay with us for another ten days or so. She can leave after that.”
56 Inni garuu, “Erga Waaqayyo karaa koo naa milkeessee isin na hin tursinaa; akka ani gara gooftaa kootti deebiʼuuf na geggeessaa” isaaniin jedhe.
“Please don't delay me,” he told them. “The Lord has made my journey successful, so let me leave and go back to my master.”
57 Isaanis, “Mee intalattii waamnee waan isheen jettu gaafanna” jedhan.
“Let's call Rebekah and find out what she wants to do,” they suggested.
58 Kana irratti isaan Ribqaa waamanii, “Namicha kana wajjin deemuu feetaa?” jedhanii ishee gaafatan. Isheenis, “Ani nan deema” jette.
They called Rebekah in and asked her, “Do you want to go with this man now?” “Yes, I'll go,” she replied.
59 Kanaafuu isaan obboleettii isaanii Ribqaa fi guddiftuu ishee, tajaajilaa Abrahaamii fi namoota isaa wajjin geggeessan.
So they let Laban's sister Rebekah leave with Abraham's servant and his men, together with the woman who had nursed her as a child.
60 Isaanis akkana jedhanii Ribqaa eebbisan; “Yaa obboleettii keenya, kumaa kumaatama taʼi; sanyiin kee karra diinota isaa haa dhaalu.”
They asked a blessing on her, saying, “Our dear sister, may you become the mother to thousands and thousands of descendants, and may they conquer their enemies.”
61 Ribqaa fi tajaajiltuuwwan ishee qophaaʼanii gaalawwan isaanii yaabbatanii namicha faana buʼan; namichis Ribqaa fudhatee deeme.
Then Rebekah and her servant girls got on the camels. They followed Abraham's servant and left.
62 Yeroo sana Yisihaaq boolla bishaanii Beʼeer Lahaayirooʼiitii dhufee Negeeb keessa jiraachaa ture.
Meanwhile Isaac, who was living in the Negev, had just come back from Beer-lahai-roi.
63 Innis gaaf tokko gara galgalaa utuu bakkeetti baʼee waa yaadaa jiruu oli ilaalee kunoo gaalawwan dhufaa jiran arge.
He went out into the fields one evening to think things over. He looked into the distance and saw camels coming.
64 Ribqaanis ol ilaaltee Yisihaaqin argite; gaala irraas buutee
Rebekah was also keeping a look out. When she saw Isaac, she got down from her camel.
65 tajaajilaa sanaan, “Namichi nu simachuuf bakkee keessa as deemaa jiru sun eenyu?” jettee gaafatte. Tajaajilaan sunis, “Inni gooftaa koo ti” jedhee deebiseef. Kanaafuu haguuggii ishee fudhattee ofitti haguugde.
She asked the servant, “Who is this walking through the fields to meet us?” “He's my master, Isaac,” he replied. So she put on her veil to cover herself.
66 Tajaajilaan sunis waan hojjete hunda Yisihaaqitti hime.
The servant told Isaac everything he'd done.
67 Yisihaaqis dunkaana haadha isaa Saaraatti ol ishee galfate; Ribqaa fuudhes. Akkasiin isheen niitii isaa taate; innis ishee jaallate; Yisihaaqis duʼa haadha isaa irraa ni jajjabaate.
Isaac took Rebekah into his mother Sarah's tent, and he married her. He loved her, and she brought him comfort after his grief over his mother's death.
