< Daaniʼel 1 >
1 Bara Yehooyaaqiim mooticha Yihuudaa keessa, waggaa sadaffaatti Nebukadnezar mootiin Baabilon dhufee Yerusaalemin marse.
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
2 Gooftaanis Yehooyaaqiim mooticha Yihuudaa miʼoota mana qulqullummaa Waaqaa tokko tokko wajjin dabarsee harka isaatti kenne. Miʼoota kanneenis gara mana Waaqa isaa, gara Baabilonitti geeffatee mankuusaa mana Waaqa isaa keessa kaaʼate.
And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the articles from the house of God. He carried these off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, where he put them in the treasury of his god.
3 Mootichis ergasii Ashfenaz itti gaafatamaa qondaaltota isaa sana waamee akka inni Israaʼeloota sanyii moototaatii fi maatii ulfina qabeeyyii taʼan tokko tokko ol galchu ajaje;
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility—
4 isaanis dargaggeeyyii hirʼina dhagnaa hin qabne, babbareedoo, kanneen barumsa gosa kamii iyyuu barachuuf dandeettii ogummaa qaban, kanneen beekumsaan badhaadhan, kanneen waan hunda hubachuu dandaʼanii fi masaraa mootummaa keessa tajaajiluuf gaʼumsa qaban turan. Innis afaanii fi katabbii Baabilonotaa isaan barsiisuu qaba ture.
young men without blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace—and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans.
5 Mootichis nyaataa fi daadhii wayinii kan guyyaa guyyaatti isaan barbaachisu maaddii mootummaa irraa isaaniif ajaje. Isaanis tajaajila mootichaa seenuuf waggaa sadii leenjifamuu qabu ture.
The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service.
6 Isaan kanneen keessaa warri Yihuudaadhaa dhufan Daaniʼel, Hanaaniyaa, Miishaaʼeelii fi Azaariyaa turan.
Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7 Itti gaafatamaan qondaaltotaa sun Daaniʼeliin Beelxishaazaar, Hanaaniyaadhaan Shaadraak, Miishaaʼeelin, Meeshak, Azaariyaadhaan immoo Abdanaagoo jedhee maqaa haaraa baaseef.
The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8 Daaniʼel garuu nyaataa fi daadhii wayinii mootichaatiin of xureessuu dide; innis akkasiin akka of hin xureessineef itti gaafatamaa qondaaltotaa sana eeyyama gaafate.
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself.
9 Waaqnis yeroo kanatti akka Daaniʼel fuula qondaala sanaa duratti surraa fi gara laafina argatu godhe;
Now God had granted Daniel favor and compassion from the chief official,
10 qondaalli sun garuu Daaniʼeliin, “Ani gooftaa koo isa nyaataa fi dhugaatii keessan isiniif ramade sana nan sodaadha; inni maaliif dargaggoota hiriyoota keessan kaan caalaa huqqattanii isin arga? Kanaan isin mootichi balaa mataa kootti fiddu” jedhe.
but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would endanger my head before the king!”
11 Kana irratti Daaniʼel waardiyyaa itti gaafatamaan qondaaltotaa sun Daaniʼelii fi Hanaaniyaa irratti, Miishaaʼeelii fi Azaariyaa irratti muude Meldaariin akkana jedhe;
Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 “Maaloo tajaajiltoota kee bultii kudhaniif ilaali; biqiltuu nyaatamuu fi bishaan dhugamu malee waan biraa nuuf hin kennin.
“Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13 Sana booddee bifa keenyaa fi bifa dargaggoota nyaata mootii nyaatanii wal biratti ilaali; waan argite irratti hundaaʼiitii tajaajiltoota kee irratti waan feete murteessi.”
Then compare our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
14 Innis yaada kana fudhatee bultii kudhan isaan qore.
So he consented to this and tested them for ten days.
15 Dhuma bultii kurnan sanaattis isaan dargaggoota nyaata mootii nyaatan sana caalaa fayyaaleyyii fi warra dhagni isaanii furdatee miidhage taʼanii argaman.
And at the end of ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than all the young men who were eating the king’s food.
16 Kanaafuu waardiyyaan sun qooda nyaata filatamaa fi daadhii wayinii kan isaan dhuguu qaban sanaa raafuu qofa isaaniif kenne.
So the steward continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and he gave them vegetables instead.
17 Waaqnis dargaggoota afran kanneeniif barumsaa fi ogummaa hunda keessatti beekumsaa fi dandeetii kenneef. Daaniʼelis mulʼataa fi abjuu hunda hubachuu dandaʼa ture.
To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. And Daniel had insight into all kinds of visions and dreams.
18 Yommuu guyyaan mootichi akka isaan gara isaatti dhiʼaatan murteesse gaʼettis, qondaalli hangaftichi fuula Nebukadnezar duratti isaan dhiʼeesse.
Now at the end of the time specified by the king, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Mootichis isaan haasofsiise; innis nama Daaniʼeliin, Hanaaniyaan, Miishaaʼeelii fi Azaariyaan qixxaatu tokko illee hin arganne; kanaafuu isaan hojii mootichaa jalqaban.
And the king spoke with them, and among all the young men he found no one equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the king’s service.
20 Mootichis waaʼee ogummaa fi beekumsaa kan isaan gaafate hundaan akka isaan ilaaltotaa fi falfaltoota biyyattiitti argaman hunda harka kudhan caalan arge.
In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.
21 Daaniʼelis hamma waggaa tokkoffaa Qiiros mootichaatti achuma ture.
And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
