< Hojii 22 >
1 “Yaa obbolootaa fi abbootii, falmata ani amma isin duratti dhiʼeeffadhu kana mee naa dhagaʼaa.”
Brethren and fathers, hear my defence which I now make to you.
2 Jarris yommuu isaa afaan Ibraayisxiitiin isaanitti dubbatu dhagaʼanitti kan duraa illee caalaa calʼisan. Phaawulosis akkana jedhe;
And hearing that he addressed them in the Hebrew tongue, they kept the more quiet; and he says,
3 “Ani Yihuudii dha; magaalaa Xarsees ishee biyya Kiilqiyaa keessaa sanattin dhaladhe; garuu Yerusaalemittin guddadhe. Miilla Gamaaliyaal jalattis seera Abbootii keenyaa akka gaariitti baradhee, akkuma isin hundi harʼa hinaaftan kana anis Waaqaaf nan hinaafa ture.
I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, educated according to [the] exactness of the law of [our] fathers, being zealous for God, as ye are all this day;
4 Dhiiraa fi dubartii qabee, mana hidhaa keessa isaan buusuudhaan duuka buutota karaa kanaa hamma duʼaatti ariʼadheera;
who have persecuted this way unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women;
5 waan kanas lubni ol aanaanii fi waldaan jaarsolii guutuun ragaa naa baʼu. Anis xalayoota isaan gara obboloota warra Damaasqoo jiraniitti barreessan fudhadheen akka namoonni kunneen adabamaniif hidhee Yerusaalemitti isaan fiduuf achi nan dhaqe.
as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the elderhood: from whom also, having received letters to the brethren, I went to Damascus to bring those also who were there, bound, to Jerusalem, to be punished.
6 “Gara saafaatti, akkuma ani Damaasqootti dhiʼaadheen ifni guddaan isaa akkuma tasaa samii irraa naannoo kootti balaqqise.
And it came to pass, as I was journeying and drawing near to Damascus, that, about mid-day, there suddenly shone out of heaven a great light round about me.
7 Anis lafatti kufeen sagalee, ‘Yaa Saaʼol! Yaa Saaʼol! Ati maaliif na ariʼatta?’ naan jedhu tokkon dhagaʼe.
And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 “Anis, ‘Yaa Gooftaa ati eenyu?’ jedheen gaafadhe. “Inni immoo deebisee, ‘Ani Yesuus nama Naazreeti isa ati ariʼattuu dha’ naan jedhe.
And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus the Nazaraean, whom thou persecutest.
9 Warri na wajjin turanis ifa sana argan malee sagalee isa natti dubbachaa ture sanaa hin hubanne.
But they that were with me beheld the light, [and were filled with fear], but heard not the voice of him that was speaking to me.
10 “Anis, ‘Yaa Gooftaa, ani maal godhu ree?’ jedhee gaafadhe. “Gooftaanis, ‘Kaʼii Damaasqoo seeni. Wanni akka ati hojjettuuf siif kaaʼame hundinuu achitti sitti himamaatii’ naan jedhe.
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Rise up, and go to Damascus, and there it shall be told thee of all things which it is appointed thee to do.
11 Anis sababii calaqqisa ifa sanaatiif homaa arguu dadhabnaan, warri na wajjin turan harka qabanii Damaasqootti na geessan.
And as I could not see, through the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came to Damascus.
12 “Namichi Anaaniyaas jedhamu kan sirriitti seera eegu tokko Yihuudoota achi jiraatan hunda biratti maqaa gaarii qaba ture.
And a certain Ananias, a pious man according to the law, borne witness to by all the Jews who dwelt [there],
13 Innis gara koo dhufee na bira dhaabatee, ‘Yaa obboleessa koo Saaʼol, agartuun kee siif haa deebiʼu!’ naan jedhe; agartuun koos yeruma sana naa deebiʼe. Anis isa arguu dandaʼe.
coming to me and standing by me, said to me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And I, in the same hour, received my sight and saw him.
14 “Innis akkana jedhe; ‘Waaqni abbootii keenyaa akka ati fedhii isaa beektu, akka ati Isa Qajeelaa sana argituu fi akka afaan isaa irraa dubbii dhageessuuf si filateera.
And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen thee beforehand to know his will, and to see the just one, and to hear a voice out of his mouth;
15 Atis waan argitee fi waan dhageesse sana fuula nama hundumaa duratti isaaf dhugaa ni baata.
for thou shalt be a witness for him to all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
16 Egaa amma maal eegda ree? Kaʼii maqaa isaa waammachaa cuuphamiitii cubbuu kee of irraa dhiqi.’
And now why lingerest thou? Arise and get baptised, and have thy sins washed away, calling on his name.
17 “Anis Yerusaalemitti deebiʼee utuu mana qulqullummaa keessatti kadhannaatti jiruu akka waan of wallaaluu nan taʼe.
And it came to pass when I had returned to Jerusalem, and as I was praying in the temple, that I became in ecstasy,
18 Gooftaa illee isaa, ‘Jarri kun waan ati waaʼee koo dhugaa baatu hin fudhataniitii dafii ammuma Yerusaalem keessaa baʼi!’ jedhee natti dubbatu nan arge.
and saw him saying to me, Make haste and go quickly out of Jerusalem, for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 “Anis deebiseen akkana jedhe; ‘Yaa Gooftaa jarri kun akka ani warra sitti amanan hidhuu fi tumuuf jedhee mana sagadaa tokko irraa gara isa biraatti darbaa ture beeku.
And I said, Lord, they themselves know that I was imprisoning and beating in every synagogue those that believe on thee;
20 Yeroo dhiigni dhuga baatuu keetii, dhiigni Isxifaanos dhangalaafamettis ani ajjeefamuu isaatti namootaan walii galee achi dhaabadheen uffata warra isa ajjeesanii eegaa ture.’
and when the blood of thy witness Stephen was shed, I also myself was standing by and consenting, and kept the clothes of them who killed him.
21 “Gooftaanis, ‘Ani fagootti, gara Namoota Ormaatti sin ergaatii deemi’ naan jedhe.”
And he said to me, Go, for I will send thee to the nations afar off.
22 Namoonni sunis hamma inni dubbii kana dubbatutti isa dhagaʼaa turan; ergasiis sagalee isaanii ol fudhatanii, “Namni akkanaa jiraachuu hin qabuutii lafa irraa balleessaa!” jedhanii iyyan.
And they heard him until this word, and lifted up their voice, saying, Away with such a one as that from the earth, for it was not fit he should live.
23 Utuu isaan uffata isaanii dadarbatanii, awwaaras qilleensa keessa bibittinneessanii iyyanuu,
And as they were crying, and throwing away their clothes, and casting dust into the air,
24 ajajaan sun akka Phaawulos qubata loltootaatti ol galfamuu ajaje; innis waan namoonni akkas isatti iyyaniif beekuuf jedhee akka Phaawulos garafamee qoratamu ajaje.
the chiliarch commanded him to be brought into the fortress, saying that he should be examined by scourging, that he might ascertain for what cause they cried thus against him.
25 Phaawulos immoo yommuu isaan isa garafuuf jedhanii teephaan isa hidhanitti ajajaa dhibbaa kan isa bira dhaabachaa tureen, “Lammii Roomaa tokko murtii malee garafuun isiniif ni eeyyamamaa?” jedhe.
But as they stretched him forward with the thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood [by], Is it lawful for you to scourge a man [who is] a Roman and uncondemned?
26 Ajajaan dhibbaa sunis yommuu waan kana dhagaʼetti gara ajajaa kumaa sanaa dhaqee, “Namichi kunoo lammii Roomaatii ati maal gochuu yaadda?” jedheen.
And the centurion, having heard it, went and reported it to the chiliarch, saying, What art thou going to do? for this man is a Roman.
27 Ajajaan kumaa sunis Phaawulos bira dhaqee, “Mee natti himi; ati lammii Roomaatii?” jedhee gaafate. Innis, “Eeyyee” jedhee deebise.
And the chiliarch coming up said to him, Tell me, Art thou a Roman? And he said, Yes.
28 Ajajaan kumaa sunis, “Ani lammummaa kana argachuudhaaf gatii guddaa baase” jedhe. Phaawulos immoo deebisee, “Ani garuu ittin dhaladhe” jedhe.
And the chiliarch answered, I, for a great sum, bought this citizenship. And Paul said, But I was also [free] born.
29 Warri isa qoruuf yaadanis yommusuma isa irraa deebiʼan; ajajaan kumaa sunis yommuu akka Phaawulos lammii Roomaa taʼee fi akka ofii isaatii immoo Phaawulosin foncaan hidhe hubatetti ni rifate.
Immediately therefore those who were going to examine him left him, and the chiliarch also was afraid when he ascertained that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 Ajajaan kumaa sun sababii Yihuudoonni Phaawulosin himataniif sirriitti beekuu fedhee guyyaa itti aanu isa hiikee akka luboonni hangafoonnii fi waldaan Yihuudootaa hundi walitti qabaman ajaje. Ergasii immoo Phaawulosin fidee akka inni fuula isaanii duratti dhiʼaatu godhe.
And on the morrow, desirous to know the certainty [of the matter] why he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and having brought Paul down set him before them.
