1 Jaarsicha irraa, Gara Gaayoos michuu koo, isa ani dhugaadhaan jaalladhuutti.
The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth!
2 Yaa michuu ko, akkuma lubbuu keetti tole sana akka wanni hundinuu sitti toluu fi akka ati fayyaa qabaattuuf nan kadhadha.
Beloved, I desire you to prosper concerning all things, and to be in health, even as your soul prospers,
3 Obboloonni tokko tokko dhufanii akka ati dhugaaf amanamaa taatee fi akka ati dhugaadhaan jiraattu natti himnaan ani akka malee gammade.
for I rejoiced exceedingly, brothers coming and testifying of the truth in you, even as you walk in truth;
4 Ijoolleen koo dhugaadhaan jiraachuu isaanii dhagaʼuu caalaa ani gammachuu guddaa hin qabu.
I have no joy greater than these things, that I may hear of my children walking in truth.
5 Yaa michuu ko, yoo isaan keessummoota sitti taʼan illee ati waan obbolootaaf gootu keessatti amanamaa dha.
Beloved, you act faithfully in whatever you may do toward the brothers and the one [among] strangers,
6 Isaan waaʼee jaalala keetii waldaa kiristaanaatti himaniiru. Maaloo haala Waaqatti toluun karaan isaanii irratti isaan gargaari.
who testified of your love before an assembly, whom you will do well, having sent forward worthily of God,
7 Isaan Maqaa isaatiif jedhanii utuu ormoota irraa gargaarsa tokko illee hin argatin baʼaniiruutii.
because they went forth for [His] Name, receiving nothing from the nations;
8 Kanaafuu nu akka isaan wajjin dhugaaf hojjennuuf namoota akkasii simannee gargaaruu qabna.
we, then, ought to receive such, that we may become fellow-workers to the truth.
9 Ani waldaa kiristaanaatiif barreesseera; garuu isaan keessaa Diiyoxiraaxiis inni duree taʼuu barbaadu nu hin simatu.
I wrote to the assembly, but he who is loving to be first among them—Diotrephes—does not receive us;
10 Kanaafuu ani yoon dhufe waan inni maqaa keenya balleessuudhaan hojjechaa jiru ifatti nan baasa. Akka waan wanni kun isa hanqateetti inni obboloota simachuu dida. Warra isaan simachuu barbaadanis ni dhowwa; waldaa kiristaanaa keessaas isaan ariʼa.
because of this, if I may come, I will cause him to remember his works that he does, talking nonsense against us with evil words; and not content with these, neither does he himself receive the brothers, and he forbids those intending [to receive them], and he casts [them] out of the assembly.
11 Yaa michuu ko, waan gaarii duukaa buʼi malee waan hamaa duukaa hin buʼin. Namni waan gaarii hojjetu kam iyyuu kan Waaqaa ti. Namni waan hamaa hojjetu garuu takkumaa Waaqa hin argine.
Beloved, do not be following that which is evil, but that which is good; he who is doing good, he is of God, [but] he who is doing evil has not seen God;
12 Namni hundi Dimeexiroosiif dhugaa baʼa; dhugaan mataan ishee iyyuu dhugaa baati. Nus dhugaa baanaaf; isinis akka dhuga baʼumsi keenya dhugaa taʼe ni beektu.
testimony has been given to Demetrius by all, and by the truth itself, and we also—we testify, and you have known that our testimony is true.
13 Ani waanan siif barreessu baayʼee qaba; garuu biirii fi qalamiidhaan barreessuu hin barbaadu.
Many things I had to write, but I do not wish to write to you through ink and pen,
14 Qooda kanaa ani dhiʼootti si arguuf abdii qaba; nus ifaan ifatti ni haasofna. Nagaan siif haa taʼu. Michoonni as jiran nagaa siif dhaamu. Atis michoota achi jiran tokko tokkoon maqaa dhaʼiitii nagaa itti nuu himi.
and I hope to see you soon, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace to you! The friends greet you. Be greeting the friends by name.
