< 2 Saamuʼeel 2 >

1 Kana booddee Daawit, “Magaalaawwan Yihuudaa keessaa gara isa tokkootti ol baʼuu?” jedhee Waaqayyoon gaafate. Waaqayyos, “Baʼi” jedheen. Daawit immoo, “Gara isa kamiittin ol baʼa?” jedhee gaafate. Waaqayyos, “Gara Kebroonitti” jedhee deebiseef.
Sometime after this, David asked the Lord, “Should I go to one of the towns of Judah?” “Yes, do it,” the Lord replied. “Which one should I go to?” David asked. “Go to Hebron,” said the Lord.
2 Kanaafuu Daawit niitota isaa lamaan jechuunis Ahiinooʼam Yizriʼeelittii sanaa fi Abiigayiil kan Naabaal namichi Qarmeloos sun irraa duʼe wajjin ol baʼe.
So David moved there with his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, Nabal's widow from Carmel.
3 Daawit namoota isa wajjin turan tokkoo tokkoo isaanii maatii isaanii wajjin fudhate; isaanis magaalaawwan Kebroon keessa qubatan.
He also brought the men who were with him, along with their families, and they settled in the villages near Hebron.
4 Ergasiis namoonni Yihuudaa gara Kebroon dhufanii mana Yihuudaa irratti Daawitin mootii godhanii diban. Yeroo akka namoonni Yaabeesh Giliʼaad Saaʼolin awwaalan Daawititti himametti,
Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king of the people of Judah. When David found out that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead who had buried Saul,
5 inni akkana jedhee gara namoota Yaabeesh Giliʼaaditti ergamoota erge; “Sababii isin isa awwaaluudhaan Saaʼol gooftaa keessaniif arjummaa akkasii gootaniif Waaqayyo isin haa eebbisu.
he sent messengers to them, saying, “May the Lord bless you, because you demonstrated your loyal love to Saul your master, and you buried him properly.
6 Ammas Waaqayyo jaalala isaa kan hin geeddaramnee fi amanamummaa isaa isiniif haa kennu; ani waan isin akkas gootaniif akkasuma waan gaarii isiniif nan godha.
Now may the Lord show you loyal love and trustworthiness, and I will also be good to you because of what you did for Saul.
7 Egaa amma jabaadhaa; cimaa; Saaʼol gooftaan keessan duʼeeraatii; namoonni Yihuudaa immoo mootii godhatanii of irratti na dibaniiru.”
So be strong and be brave, for even though Saul your master is dead, the people of Judah have anointed me as their king.”
8 Yeroo sanatti Abneer ilmi Neer ajajaan waraanaa Saaʼol Iish-Booshet ilma Saaʼol fuudhee gara Mahanayiimitti dabarse.
However, Abner, son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, had taken Ishbosheth, son of Saul, to Mahanaim.
9 Innis Giliʼaad, Ashuur, Yizriʼeel, Efreemii fi Beniyaam, akkasumas guutummaa Israaʼel irratti isa moosise.
There he set up Ishbosheth as king over Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin, in fact over all Israel.
10 Iish-Booshet ilmi Saaʼol yeroo Israaʼel irratti mootii taʼetti umuriin isaa waggaa afurtama ture; innis waggaa lama moʼe. Taʼus manni Yihuudaa Daawit duukaa buʼe.
Ishbosheth, son of Saul, was forty when he became king over Israel, and he reigned for two years. However, the people of Judah were on David's side.
11 Daawitis Kebroonitti mana Yihuudaa irratti waggaa torbaa fi jiʼa jaʼa mootii taʼe.
David ruled in Hebron as king over the people of Judah for seven years and six months.
12 Abneer ilmi Neer namoota Iish-Booshet ilma Saaʼol sana wajjin Mahanayiimii kaʼanii gara Gibeʼoon dhaqan.
One day Abner and Ishbosheth's men left Mahanaim and went to the town of Gibeon.
13 Yooʼaab ilmi Zeruuyaa fi namoonni Daawit isaan simachuuf baʼanii haroo Gibeʼoon biratti itti dhufan. Gareen tokko gama tokkoon, gareen kaan immoo gama kaaniin haroo sana bira tataaʼan.
Joab, son of Zeruiah, and David's men set off and met them at the pool of Gibeon, where they all sat down, facing each other across the pool.
14 Abneeris Yooʼaabiin, “Mee dargaggoonni kaʼanii fuula keenya duratti wal haa tuman” jedhe. Yooʼaabis, “Haa taʼu; wal haa tuman” jedhe.
Abner said to Joab, “Why not let's have some of the men fight in hand to hand combat before us.” “Fine,” Joab agreed.
15 Kanaafuu Beniyaam irraa namoonni kudha lama Iish-Booshet ilma Saaʼoliif, namoonni kudha lama immoo kaʼanii Daawitiif lakkaaʼaman.
So twelve men came forward from each side—twelve for Benjamin and Ishbosheth, and twelve for David.
16 Tokkoon tokkoon namaas mormituu isaa mataa qabee cinaacha isaatti goraadee diree wal qabatanii kukkufan. Kanaafuu iddoon sun Gibeʼoon keessatti lafa goraadee jedhamee waamame.
Each man grabbed his opponent's head and drove his sword into his opponent's side so that they all fell down dead together. That's why this place in Gibeon is called the Field of Sword-edges.
17 Lolli gaafa sanaa akka malee jabaa ture; Abneerii fi namoonni Israaʼelis namoota Daawitiin moʼataman.
The battle that followed was hard-fought, but eventually Abner and his men were defeated by David's men.
18 Ilmaan Zeruuyaa sadan jechuunis Yooʼaab, Abiishaayii fi Asaaheel achi turan. Asaaheel akkuma kuruphee bosonaa fiigichatti nama jabaa ture.
The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was a fast runner, like a gazelle racing across the open countryside.
19 Innis utuu mirgatti yookaan bitaatti hin gorin faana buʼee Abneerin ariʼe.
He chased after Abner with single-minded determination.
20 Abneeris of irra garagalee, “Ati Asaaheelii?” jedhee gaafate. Innis, “Eeyyee anuma” jedhee deebise.
Abner looked back and asked, “Is that you, Asahel?” “Yes, it's me,” Asahel replied.
21 Ergasiis Abneer, “Gara mirgaatti yookaan bitaatti garagaliitii dargaggeessa tokko qabii miʼa lolaa isaa irraa fudhadhu” jedheen. Asaaheel garuu isa ariʼuu hin dhiifne.
Abner told him, “Leave me alone! Go and fight somebody else and take his weapons for yourself!” But Asahel refused to stop chasing him.
22 Abneer ammas Asaaheelin, “Na hin ariʼin! Ani maaliifan si galaafadha? Ani akkamittin fuula koo ol fudhadhee obboleessa kee Yooʼaabin ilaala?” jedhe.
Abner warned Asahel again. “Stop chasing me!” he shouted. “Why do you want me to kill you? How could I ever face your brother Joab?”
23 Asaaheel garuu isa ariʼuu hin dhiifne; kanaafuu Abneer qara eeboo isaatiin garaa isaa waraane; eeboon sunis keessa fullaʼee dugda isaatiin baʼe. Asaaheelis achitti kufee yommuu suma duʼe. Namni hundis iddoo Asaaheel itti kufee duʼe sana gaʼee dhaabata ture.
But Asahel wouldn't stop chasing him, so Abner drove the handle of his spear into his belly. It came out the back, and he fell down dead right there. Everyone who passed by stopped at the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
24 Yooʼaabii fi Abiishaayi garuu Abneerin ariʼan; isaanis yeroo aduun dhiʼetti gaara Amaa kan karaa gammoojjii Gibeʼoonitti geessu irra Giiyaatti garagalee argamu sana gaʼan.
But Joab and Abishai set off to chase after Abner. By the time the sun went down they had got as far as the hill of Ammah near Giah, on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 Namoonni Beniyaamis Abneer biratti walitti qabaman. Isaanis gareedhaan walgurmeessanii gaara Amaa gubbaatti hiriiran.
Abner's men from the tribe of Benjamin rallied to him there, forming a tight group around him standing at the top of the hill.
26 Abneeris iyyee Yooʼaabin waamee, “Goraadeen kun bara baraan waa galaafachuu qabaa? Akka dhumni waan kanaa hadhaaʼaa taʼe ati wallaalteetii? Ati hamma yoomiitti akka namoonni kee obboloota isaanii ariʼuu dhiisan itti hin himtu?” jedhe.
Abner shouted to Joab: “Do we have to keep killing each other forever? Don't you realize that if we go on it'll only get worse? How long are you going to wait before you order your men to stop chasing their brothers?”
27 Yooʼaab immoo deebisee, “Dhugaa Waaqa jiraataa, utuu ati waan kana jechuu baattee silaa namoonni hamma lafti bariʼutti obboloota isaanii ariʼuu irraa hin deebiʼan ture” jedhe.
“As God lives,” Joab replied, “if you had not said anything, my men would have continued chasing their brothers until the morning.”
28 Kanaafuu Yooʼaab malakata afuufe; namoonni hundis Israaʼeloota ariʼuu dhiisan; lammatas waraanni isaan gidduutti hin kaane.
Joab blew the horn so all the men stopped—they didn't continue chasing or fighting the Israelites.
29 Abneerii fi namoonni isaa halkan sana guutuu Arabbaa keessa yaaʼanii darban. Isaanis Laga Yordaanos ceʼanii guutummaa Biitroon keessa darbanii gara Mahanayiim dhufan.
All through the night Abner and his men marched through the Jordan Valley. They crossed the Jordan River, and continued all morning until they arrived back at Mahanaim.
30 Ergasiis Yooʼaab Abneerin ariʼuu dhiisee namoota isaa hunda walitti qabe. Yeroo sanattis akka namoota Daawit keessaa Asaaheelin malee namoonni kudha sagal badan beekame.
When Joab got back from chasing Abner, he gathered all the men together. Nineteen of David's men were missing in addition to Asahel.
31 Namoonni Daawit garuu namoota Beniyaam keessaa warra Abneer wajjin turan dhibba sadii fi jaatama ajjeesan.
However, they had killed three hundred and sixty of Abner's men from the tribe of Benjamin.
32 Isaanis reeffa Asaaheel fudhatanii Beetlihemitti iddoo awwaala abbaa isaatti awwaalan. Yooʼaabii fi namoonni isaa halkan guutuu deemaa bulanii barii obboroo Kebroon gaʼan.
They took Asahel's body and buried him in his father's tomb in Bethlehem. Then they marched all through the night and reached Hebron at dawn.
