1 Betre er ein fatigmann som ferdast lytelaust enn ein mann med range lippor som attpå er ein dåre.
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and a fool at the same time.
2 Den som er tankelaus i hugen, gjeng det gale, og den som stig for fort med føterne, han stig i miss.
Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.
3 Mannsens eigi vitløysa fører til fall, men han harmast i sitt hjarta på Herren.
The foolishness of man perverteth his way; and his heart fretteth against the LORD.
4 Velstand samla mange vener, men fatigmann vert skild frå venen sin.
Wealth addeth many friends; but as for the poor, his friend separateth himself from him.
5 Det falske vitnet skal’kje verta urefst, og den som andar lygn, skal ikkje sleppa undan.
A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that breatheth forth lies shall not escape.
6 Mange smeikjer den gjæve, og kvar mann er ven med den rauste.
Many will entreat the favour of the liberal man; and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.
7 Fatigmanns brør hatar honom alle, enn meir dreg hans vener seg burt frå honom. Han fer etter ord som er inkjevetta.
All the brethren of the poor do hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He that pursueth words, they turn against him.
8 Den som elskar si sjæl, han vinn seg vit, den som vaktar sitt skyn, skal finna lukka.
He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul; he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that breatheth forth lies shall perish.
10 Det høver ei for dåren å hava gode dagar, enn mindre for ein træl å råda yver hovdingar.
Luxury is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11 Mannsens klokskap gjev honom tol, og det er hans æra å tilgjeva brot.
It is the discretion of a man to be slow to anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
12 Konungs harm er som når løva burar, men godhugen hans er som dogg i graset.
The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.
13 Ein dårleg son er reint ei ulukka for far sin, og kjerringtrætta er som si-drop frå taket.
A foolish son is the calamity of his father; and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
14 Hus og gods er fedre-arv, men frå Herren kjem ei vitug kona.
House and riches are the inheritance of fathers; but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15 Leta svæver tungt i svevn, og letingen skal svelta.
Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.
16 Den som tek vare på bodet, tek vare på sitt liv, den som ei ansar si åtferd, skal missa livet.
He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his soul; but he that despiseth His ways shall die.
17 Den som gjer miskunn mot armingen, låner til Herren, og av honom fær han vederlag for si velgjerning.
He that is gracious unto the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and his good deed will He repay unto him.
18 Aga son din, for endå er det von, men lat deg ikkje driva til å drepa honom.
Chasten thy son, for there is hope; but set not thy heart on his destruction.
19 Den som er svært sinna, lyt bøta for det, for um du hjelper han, du gjer vondt verre.
A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment; for if thou interpose, thou wilt add thereto.
20 Høyr på råd og lat deg aga, so du til slutt kann verta vis.
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
21 Mange tankar er i mannsens hjarta, men Herrens råd fær framgang.
There are many devices in a man's heart; but the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
22 Mannsens miskunn er hans gode vilje, og fatig man er betre enn ein som lyg.
The lust of a man is his shame; and a poor man is better than a liar.
23 Otte for Herren fører til liv, mett fær ein kvila og vert ikkje heimsøkt med vondt.
The fear of the LORD tendeth to life; and he that hath it shall abide satisfied, he shall not be visited with evil.
24 Stikk den late si hand i fatet, so idest han ei ta ho upp att til munnen.
The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it back to his mouth.
25 Slær du spottaren, so vert uvitingen klok, og agar du den vituge, so fær han vit på kunnskap.
When thou smitest a scorner, the simple will become prudent; and when one that hath understanding is reproved, he will understand knowledge.
26 Den som er vond med far sin og jagar mor si burt, han er ein son til skam og skjemd.
A son that dealeth shamefully and reproachfully will despoil his father, and chase away his mother.
27 Høyr ikkje soleis på refsing, son min, at du villar deg burt frå kunnskaps ord!
Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
28 Eit nidings-vitne spottar det som rett er, og munnen på gudlause gløyper urett.
An ungodly witness mocketh at right; and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.
29 Refsingsdomar er ferdige for spottaren og slag for ryggen på dårar.
Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
