4 Mosebok 14
1 Då skreik alt folket yver seg, og dei gret heile natti.
And all the company lifteth up and give forth their voice, and the people weep during that night;
2 Og alle Israels-borni, heile lyden, mukka mot Moses og Aron, og sagde: «Gud gjeve me hadde døytt i Egyptarlandet eller her i øydemarki - å Gud gjeve me hadde døytt!
and all the sons of Israel murmur against Moses, and against Aaron, and all the company say unto them, 'O that we had died in the land of Egypt, or in this wilderness, O that we had died!
3 Kvi vil Herren føra oss til dette landet, so me vert nedhogne, og konorne og borni våre vert fangar? Er det ikkje betre for oss å fara attende til Egyptarland?»
and why is Jehovah bringing us in unto this land to fall by the sword? our wives and our infants are become a prey; is it not good for us to turn back to Egypt?'
4 Og dei sagde seg imillom: «Me vil taka oss ein hovding, og fara attende til Egyptarland!»
And they say one unto another, 'Let us appoint a head, and turn back to Egypt.'
5 Då kasta Moses og Aron seg ned på jordi for augo åt heile Israels-lyden;
And Moses falleth — Aaron also — on their faces, before all the assembly of the company of the sons of Israel.
6 og Josva, son åt Nun, og Kaleb, son åt Jefunne, som hadde vore med og forfare Kana’ans-landet, reiv sund klædi sine
And Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh, of those spying the land, have rent their garments,
7 og tala til heile Israels-lyden, og sagde: «Det landet som me hev fare igjenom og skoda, er eit ovgodt land.
and they speak unto all the company of the sons of Israel, saying, 'The land into which we have passed over to spy it, [is] a very very good land;
8 Er Gud oss god, so fører han oss fram til landet, og gjev oss det; det er eit land som fløymer med mjølk og honning.
if Jehovah hath delighted in us, then He hath brought us in unto this land, and hath given it to us, a land which is flowing with milk and honey;
9 Set dykk berre ikkje upp mot Gud, og ver ikkje rædde folket som bur der i landet! Dei er ikkje annleis enn som eit matmål for oss. Hjelpi deira hev kvorve burt, og Herren er med oss. Ver ikkje rædde!»
only, against Jehovah rebel not ye: and ye, fear not ye the people of the land, for our bread they [are]; their defence hath turned aside from off them, and Jehovah [is] with us; fear them not.'
10 Då vilde heile lyden steina deim; men Herrens herlegdom synte seg i møtetjeldet for heile Israels-folket.
And all the company say to stone them with stones, and the honour of Jehovah hath appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the sons of Israel.
11 Og Herren sagde til Moses: «Kor lenge vil dette folket hæda og vanvyrda meg? Kor lenge vil dei mistru meg, endå so mange teikn som eg hev gjort millom deim?
And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Until when doth this people despise Me? and until when do they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have done in its midst?
12 Men no vil eg søkja deim med sott, og rydja deim ut, og so vil eg gjera di ætt til eit større og sterkare folk enn dei er.»
I smite it with pestilence, and dispossess it, and make thee become a nation greater and mightier than it.'
13 Då sagde Moses til Herren: «Skal då egyptarane få spyrja slikt? dei som du førde dette folket burt i frå i ditt velde!
And Moses saith unto Jehovah, 'Then have the Egyptians heard! for Thou hast brought up with Thy power this people out of their midst,
14 Skal dei få det å tala um med folk her i landet, som hev høyrt at du, Herre, er midt imillom dette folket, og syner deg for deim, andlit til andlit, du, Herre, og at skyi di held seg yver deim, og at du gjeng fyre deim i ein skystopul um dagen og i ein eldstopul um natti?
and they have said [it] unto the inhabitant of this land, they have heard that Thou, Jehovah, [art] in the midst of this people, that eye to eye Thou art seen — O Jehovah, and Thy cloud is standing over them, — and in a pillar of cloud Thou art going before them by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Slær du no dette folket i hel, som det var ein mann, so kjem dei folki som hev høyrt ordet um deg til å segja:
'And Thou hast put to death this people as one man, and the nations who have heard Thy fame have spoken, saying,
16 «Herren magta ikkje å føra dette folket fram til det landet han hadde lova deim, og so drap han deim ned i øydemarki.»
From Jehovah's want of ability to bring in this people unto the land which He hath sworn to them — He doth slaughter them in the wilderness.
17 Men syn deg no i ditt velde, Herre, som du lova då du sagde:
'And now, let, I pray Thee, the power of my Lord be great, as Thou hast spoken, saying:
18 «Herren er tolug og rik på nåde. Han tilgjev brot og misgjerningar; men han vil ikkje at den skuldige skal vera strafflaus: han hemner broti åt federne på borni og på barnebarns-borni og borni etter deim.»
Jehovah [is] slow to anger, and of great kindness; bearing away iniquity and transgression, and not entirely acquitting, charging iniquity of fathers on sons, on a third [generation], and on a fourth; —
19 Tilgjev då av di store nåde broti åt dette folket, liksom du hev havt tolmod med deim heile vegen, frå Egyptarland og hit!»
forgive, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of Thy kindness, and as Thou hast borne with this people from Egypt, even until now.'
20 Då sagde Herren: «Eg skal gjeva deim til, som du bed um.
And Jehovah saith, 'I have forgiven, according to thy word;
21 Men so vist som eg liver og Herrens herlegdom fyller heile jordi:
and yet, I live — and it is filled — the whole earth — [with] the honour of Jehovah;
22 ingen av deim som hev set herlegdomen min og dei teikni eg gjorde i Egyptarland og i øydemarki, og som like vel hev freista meg gong på gong, og aldri vilde lyda på ordi mine -
for all the men who are seeing My honour, and My signs, which I have done in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and try Me these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice —
23 ingen av deim skal sjå det landet eg hev lova federne deira; ingen av deim som hev hædt og vanvyrdt meg, skal få sjå det.
they see not the land which I have sworn to their fathers, yea, none of those despising Me see it;
24 Men Kaleb, tenaren min, vil eg fylgja til det landet han hev vore i, og ætti hans skal få det til eiga; for honom er det ein annan hug i, og han hev halde seg trutt etter meg.
and My servant Caleb, because there hath been another spirit with him, and he is fully after Me — I have brought him in unto the land whither he hath entered, and his seed doth possess it.
25 Amalekitarne og kananitarne bur her i dalen; difor lyt de i morgon venda um, og taka ut i øydemarki, den vegen som ber til Raudehavet.»
'And the Amalekite and the Canaanite are dwelling in the valley; to-morrow turn ye and journey for yourselves into the wilderness — the way of the Red Sea.'
26 Og Herren tala meir til Moses og Aron, og sagde:
And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, and unto Aaron, saying,
27 «Kor lenge skal denne vonde lyden halda på å mukka mot meg? Eg hev nok høyrt korleis Israels-sønerne murrar og mukkar imot meg.
'Until when hath this evil company that which they are murmuring against Me? the murmurings of the sons of Israel, which they are murmuring against Me, I have heard;
28 Seg til deim: «So vist som eg liver, » segjer Herren: «det som eg høyrde de ynskte dykk, det skal de få.
say unto them, I live — an affirmation of Jehovah — if, as ye have spoken in Mine ears — so I do not to you;
29 Her i øydemarki skal beini dykkar liggja, alle de som vart mynstra, heile flokken, so mange som er yver tjuge år gamle og hev sett seg upp imot meg;
in this wilderness do your carcases fall, even all your numbered ones, to all your number, from a son of twenty years and upward, who have murmured against Me;
30 ingen av dykk skal koma inn i det landet som eg rette handi i veret på at eg vilde gjeva dykk til bustad - ingen utan Kaleb, son åt Jefunne, og Josva, son åt Nun.
ye — ye come not in unto the land which I have lifted up My hand to cause you to tabernacle in it, except Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua son of Nun.
31 Småborni dykkar, som de spådde skulde falla i fiendehand, deim vil eg fylgja dit, og dei skal verta heime i det landet som de hev vanda.
'As to your infants — of whom ye have said, A spoil they are become — I have even brought them in, and they have known the land which ye have kicked against;
32 Men dykkar bein skal liggja her i øydemarki;
as to you — your carcases do fall in this wilderness,
33 og sønerne dykkar skal gjæta i heiderne i fyrti år, og lida for utruskapen dykkar, til beini dykkar hev morkna i øydemarki.
and your sons are evil in the wilderness forty years, and have borne your whoredoms till your carcases are consumed in the wilderness;
34 Likso mange dagar som de for yver Kana’ans-landet, likso mange år skal de lida for broti dykkar, fyrti år, eit år for kvar dag, og de skal få kjenna korleis det er når eg vender meg frå dykk.
by the number of the days [in] which ye spied the land, forty days, — a day for a year, a day for a year — ye do bear your iniquities, forty years, and ye have known my breaking off;
35 Det segjer eg, Herren: So vil eg gjera med heile denne vonde lyden, som hev slege seg i hop mot meg; i denne øydemarki skal dei enda sine dagar, her skal dei døy.»»
I [am] Jehovah, I have spoken; if I do not this to all this evil company who are meeting against me; — in this wilderness they are consumed, and there they die.'
36 Dei mennerne som Moses hadde sendt ut til å forfara Kana’ans-landet, og som spreidde låke tiender um det då dei kom att, og fekk heile lyden til å setja seg upp imot Moses,
And the men whom Moses hath sent to spy the land, and they turn back and cause all the company to murmur against him, by bringing out an evil account concerning the land,
37 desse mennerne, som hadde lasta burt landet, dei døydde brått for Herrens åsyn.
even the men bringing out an evil account of the land die by the plague before Jehovah;
38 Av alle deim som hadde fare på njosningsferd til Kana’ans-landet, var det berre Josva, son åt Nun, og Kaleb, son åt Jefunne, som fekk liva.
and Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh, have lived of those men who go to spy out the land.
39 Og Moses bar Herrens ord fram for Israels-folket. Då angra dei sårt,
And Moses speaketh these words unto all the sons of Israel, and the people mourn exceedingly,
40 og dagen etter, i otta, tok dei uppetter til høgfjellet, og sagde: «Sjå her er me og vil fara upp til den staden som Herren hev sagt; for me hev synda.»
and they rise early in the morning, and go up unto the top of the mountain, saying, 'Here we [are], and we have come up unto the place which Jehovah hath spoken of, for we have sinned.'
41 Då sagde Moses: «Kvi vil de då gjera imot Herrens ord? Dette kjem ikkje til å lukkast.
And Moses saith, 'Why [is] this? — ye are transgressing the command of Jehovah, and it doth not prosper;
42 Far ikkje dit! For Herren er ikkje med dykk. De kjem berre til å rjuka for fienden.
go not up, for Jehovah is not in your midst, and ye are not smitten before your enemies;
43 For der møter de amalekitarne og kananitarne, og då vert de nedhogne, etter di de hev vike frå Herren, og han ikkje er med dykk.»
for the Amalekite and the Canaanite [are] there before you, and ye have fallen by the sword, because that ye have turned back from after Jehovah, and Jehovah is not with you.'
44 Like vel var dei so uvyrdne at dei styrmde av stad til høgfjellet. Men Herrens sambandskista og Moses flutte seg ikkje frå lægret.
And they presume to go up unto the top of the mountain, and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah and Moses have not departed out of the midst of the camp.
45 Og amalekitarne og kananitarne, som budde på det fjellet, kom ned, og slo deim og jaga deim frå einannan, og elte deim alt til Horma.
And the Amalekite and the Canaanite who are dwelling in that mountain come down and smite them, and beat them down — unto Hormah.
