1 Timoteus 3
1 Det er eit sant ord: Um nokon trår etter eit tilsynsembætte, so hev han lyst til ei gjæv gjerning.
This [is] a true saying, If a man desireth the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 Difor skal ein tilsynsmann vera ulastande, mann til ei kvinna, ædrueleg, visleg, verdig, gjestmild, dugleg til å læra frå seg,
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 ikkje drikkekjær, ikkje hardhendt, men godlyndt, ikkje stridsam, ikkje pengekjær,
Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but patient; not a brawler, not covetous;
4 ein som styrer vel sitt eige hus, og hev lyduge born med all søma
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 - um nokon ikkje veit å styra sitt eige hus, kor kann han då hava umsut for Guds kyrkja? -
(For if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 ikkje ein ny-umvend, so han ikkje skal ovmoda seg og falla i djevelens dom.
Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Men han skal og hava godt vitnemål av deim som er utanfor, so han ikkje skal få lastord og falla i djevelens snara.
Moreover, he must have a good report of them who are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Like eins skal tenarane for kyrkjelyden vera vyrdelege, ikkje tvitunga, ikkje kjære etter mykje vin, ikkje lystne etter låk vinning,
Likewise [must] the deacons [be] grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre,
9 slike som hev løyndomen i trui i eit godt samvit.
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 Dei og skal fyrst verta prøvde; sidan skal dei tena kyrkjelyden, um dei er ulastelege.
And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being [found] blameless.
11 Like eins skal kvinnorne vera vyrdelege, ikkje baktalande, men ædruelege, true i alle ting.
Even so [must their] wives [be] grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12 Tenarane for kyrkjelyden skal kvar vera mann til ei kona og styra vel sine born og sine eigne hus.
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children, and their own houses well.
13 For dei som hev tent kyrkjelyden vel, dei vinn seg eit godt støde og stort frimod i trui på Kristus Jesus.
For they that have used the office of a deacon well, purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith, which is in Christ Jesus.
14 Dette skriv eg til deg, endå eg vonar å koma snart til deg,
These things I write to thee, hoping to come to thee shortly:
15 men um eg drygjer, at du so skal vita korleis ein skal ferdast i Guds hus, som er kyrkja åt den livande Gud, pilaren og grunnvollen til sanningi.
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 Og som kvar må sanna, stor er den løyndom i gudlegdomen: Han som vart openberra i kjøt, rettferdiggjord i ånd, sedd av englar, forkynt millom folkeslag, trudd i verdi, uppteken i herlegdom.
And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
